Hi I recently loaded Puppy 5.2.8 and the sound worked ok for a while then on a reboot the sound icon had disappeared and no sound!
I used Alsa sound wizard which picked up the card but then when it tried to play gave something like a 600 input/output error.
I run Puppy 5.2.8 from a hard drive also and have no problem with the sound on that.
Is there anything I can do to sort this out??
Thanks
Paul

Puppy 5.2.8 USB install sound disappeared!
Emmauspaul
1. What version of 528 are you using? (original, ISO 003 or ISO 004)
2. Was the install to USB flash stick or USB hard drive?
3. What file format is on the device? (vfat or something else)
4. How did you carry out the install?
5. Can you list the pets installed?
6. What format did you select for the save file? (ext2 or ext3)
7. Is the save file on the same device or somewhere else?
8. Are time & date displaying correctly? (bottom right hand corner of screen)
9. In the working session just prior to the reboot did anything happen that now in retrospect seems unusual or odd?
10. What boot-loader are you using? (e.g. grub, syslinux or something else)
11. I note that you posted in the hardware section rather than bugs – do you suspect hardware for some reason?
12. Please post your boot codes:
Syslinux example: (grub will differ)
Please do a fresh install of ISO 004 if that is not the one you are using as it was intended to fix audio problems.
Sorry to hear of your problem. Can you please provide some more detail?Hi I recently loaded Puppy 5.2.8 and the sound worked ok for a while then on a reboot the sound icon had disappeared and no sound!

puppy 528 sound problems
1. What version of 528 are you using? (original, ISO 003 or ISO 004) - dont know
2. Was the install to USB flash stick or USB hard drive? - I installed to a usb flash stick.
3. What file format is on the device? (vfat or something else) - ext 2
4. How did you carry out the install? - booted from live cd then used the install button on the desktop
5. Can you list the pets installed? - quite a few but not sure exactly
6. What format did you select for the save file? (ext2 or ext3) -ext 2
7. Is the save file on the same device or somewhere else? - on the same device
8. Are time & date displaying correctly? (bottom right hand corner of screen) - yes
9. In the working session just prior to the reboot did anything happen that
now in retrospect seems unusual or odd? - not that I can remember
10. What boot-loader are you using? (e.g. grub, syslinux or something else) - grub
11. I note that you posted in the hardware section rather than bugs – do you suspect hardware for some reason? - no sorry new to linux and this forum i will repost on bugs if that would be better
12. Please post your boot codes: - not sure where to find them!
Syslinux example: (grub will differ)
I missed the sound icon on a reboot, it happened before so i reloaded the whole system again and it worked fine for a few reboots, then disappeared again. It feels like the 'save' is not saving the sound configuration files properly for some reason and as I am very new to linux I am not sure of their original config. However I note from this forum that there are many who seem to have similar problems.
I'm afraid that I probably can't give you all the technical information that you would need to help me. but thank you for your kind help

Re: puppy 528 sound problems
Paul,
You have done well in the information stakes for someone new to Linux. I would suggest that you start again by downloading the latest version which can be found below.
If that is what you used previously you may have had a bad download.
Lucid Puppy 5.2.8
Version 004 released DEC 19, 2011
http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/lupu-528.004.iso
Install using the same method as previously but do not install any pets until you have run for a few days and had no problems with sound loss over several re-boots.

Thanks ETP
Hi there thanks very much for your advice. As I say its all very new to me, I did use Red Hat Linux many years ago although I backslid and returned to the devil that I knew.
I'm really impressed by Puppy Linux though, it's a nice little dog and I'm having a Linux revival! I particularly like the idea of carrying my 'computer' around with me in my pocket..
I will do what you said and reload the usb from a fresh no.4 download, it was sometime earlier in the year that I downloaded the cd I have at the moment, so it probably was no.3
I am thinking of having an handful of usb sticks with linux on and might have a look at Slako 5.3.1 as an option. I have previously tried to run Ubuntu & Mint Linux 10 on this my machine a Dell GX240 with about a Meg of RAM and it does not seem up to the job. (at least I got my BBC Basic to work under Wine!)
My real problem is that in terms of connection I have got it tethered to a Nokia 5600 on 3G which works fine for general web browsing but I will have to go to the library to download some ISO's.
Anyway I have found these forums to be very helpful and given a few years if I keep practicing my scripts - well you never know.
Once again many thanks for your help
All the best
