GREAT NEWS! We're still concerned for your health - but really glad that you are lurking around still, at the very least. puppyluvr reminded me of your legacy recently and since I now have My First 64bit system, this shall Be The One that finally drags my household away from Micro$oft (by puppet strings). Please steel yourself for the usual round of accolades (feedback) in due course,
Best Wishes!

Cheers TazOC and interested parties,
having great (too much) fun configuring Lighthouse64 to replace M$ - have removed the pinboard and strung my preferred applications along the top panel in the Application Launch Bar, tucked out of the way until needed (unhide). I've also installed my bought copy of SoftMaker Office2010 for Linux - using the 64bit deb install - runs PERFECTLY. (And the student version is about a 10th the cost of the latest M$ Office, last time I checked)
I'm having a few minor problems however.
The Chromium SFS in the /sfs/514-x86_64 repository (same one as in the Mariner ISO I believe) seems to be broken in some way - looks like it should work with no install/dependency complaints, but simply refuses to load in my setup. Is anyone else having success with this?
Updated Firefox using playdays' FF13 pet for Lucid - seems to have misplaced an icon library for tab forward/backward, reload, close tabs etc. Otherwise works fine. I have troubles with both installing the flashplayer add-in from Adobe (shudder), or using the "install Flashplayer" pet for Lucid - just can't seem to get Shockwave flash working in FF13 at present - but that is certainly NOT a show-stopper :)
The last issue I have is configuring a Spam filter. We've opted to run with Thunderbird here (but Claws is a very useful addition too) to replace our old Outlook 2002. This is principally because our ISP - Telstra BigSwamp (they call themselves 'BigPond' - as if to remind us little fish customers, our place in the dangerous cyberworld) - insists on funneling us spam -even stuff purporting to be from Telstra(!) - because we don't pay for the extra 'privilege' of their anti-spamming service. Then they have the cheek to keep emailing and even snail-mailing us warnings that our computer is infected with viruses - ClamWin identified all the issues lurking solely in the trashed/ignored attachments from BigSwamp....
oops sorry for the rant. Anyway I downloaded both the latest MailWasher http://www.mailwasher.net/mailwasher-free (http://cdn.firetrust.com/downloads/mail ... 062012.exe) and found I couldn't get it running in this Wine environment, and I tried also SpamAssassin (http://mirror.mel.bkb.net.au/pub/apache ... 3.2.tar.gz). But, even after downloading the perl pet via PPM to enable a compile:

Code: Select all

perl Makefile.PL
[option: add -DSPAMC_SSL to $CFLAGS to build an SSL-enabled spamc]
	make
	make install
I ran into all sorts of problems and failed to install. A Console-LHP issue perhaps, as I was still getting bash errors? A SpamAssassin pet would be marvelous, if it were possible http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/.

I'm totally clueless about these finer points for tweaking the LH64 environment, and would appreciate any advice,
Cheers

P.S. Current specs :- Gigabyte MBO G41V-ES2L rev1.0, Dual PentiumD CPU 3.40GHz, 3 GB DDR2 RAM. Frugal install on SATA IDE.

64-bit Firefox update; dealing with spam

Hi Puppyt,

Thank you for the kind wishes and for sharing your experience thus far.

Please try installing this new update, which might fix Firefox and Chrome on your system.
http://www.lhpup.org/update/L64-514/Int ... x86_64.pet md5sum: 1396245959e26e07faf9f0d0a0701f6e

If it doesn't, please type

Code: Select all

google-chrome-spot
or

Code: Select all

firefox-spot
into a terminal and paste the output here. Or start anew with a clean L64save by rebooting and entering puppy pfix=ram at the boot menu, then rename your pupsave, e.g., L64save.4fs to L64save.4fs.bak or similar.

Please don't install any Pets or packages, unless they are compatible with 64-bit Linux. You can tell by noting the the Pet/package name: it should contain x86_64 or amd64 or 64-bit or possibly 'noarch'. 32-bit packages will not work properly in Lighthouse 64. That's likely why Adobe flash isn't working for you with the Pet for Lucid's 32-bit Firefox, and L64 comes with a 64-bit flashplayer. In a frugal install you can restore 64-bit flash-11.1 by pasting this into (Shift + Insert) a terminal:

Code: Select all

cp -f /initrd/pup_ro2/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/
The only exceptions to the '64-bit rule' would be Windows apps to be run in Wine, which must be 32-bit, or possible CUPS printer drivers. If the built-in CUPS doesn't detect your printer, and you have checked Lighthouse Update --> System for a suitable driver, then you can try a 32-bit printer driver PET from Forum index » Advanced Topics » Hardware » Printers.
I don't think SpamAssassin is a likely solution in L64, or any Pup for that matter. It is very complex and not very user-friendly. Aren't even any Slackware64 13.37 packages available. Personally I rely mostly on web-based email accounts, which can be accessed from any machine with a browser. They are free and don't rely on using any particular ISP. Get two and keep one as a throw-away for any questionable web sites that might need an email address. Maybe others using Thunderbird or Claws Mail (also in L64) might have some ideas, apart from getting a new email account and being cautious about who gets the email address once you start using it.

Hope that helps,
TaZoC

PERFECT :D
(actually I was responding to Tazoc's earlier post re FF13, but the sentiment is echoed for gcmartin's comment, above).

With more struggling with the Lucid pet for FF13 I downloaded from elsewhere on the forums, I saw that it was a gross mis-match for the LH64 environment in ways to numerous to list here. Opera11 also wouldn't run any Shockwave Flash given the flash-plugin-11.xxxx I also installed. I removed the Lucid FF13 and installed your new compile -MANY THANKS - but had to surrender the computer to the wife before I got a chance to test... (I hadn't uninstallled and reinstalled the flash package. Originally downloaded from the slackware64 repro in PPM.)
My wife discovered that all the flash sites (e.g., TED) she had been trying to access in Opera11 were immediately functional since your updated FF13 pet, and I can confirm that FF13 works brilliantly, in all respects. Have yet to re-install the Chromium SFS, but am sure it would work with Flash.

I forgot to mention also that this is the first time I've tried to use CUPS in yonks (err - before now resorted back to XP to do my printing). Got the ppd for my Lexmark T632 downloaded and she is humming off the USB very well indeed! Able to print off my SoftMaker Office manuscripts without any drama whatsoever - what a pleasure to use! (Ctrl-P combo is so cool!)

And, I appreciate Sven keyboard daemon very much. I'm afraid I'm a stickler for my WINkey combos, and I was delighted how quickly I was able to configure "win+F" to now open pFind, for example. (PS thanks for including Win+D for desktop clearing!) Other combos will follow as I require them - guess "Print Scrn" key options for PupSnap, dialog window saves etc will be my next little project. I know they probably have their own hotkeys already, but for a Windows refugee (like me I guess), those little 'homely' touches of familiarity would help anyone curious about actually leaving Windows behind in their wake.

3 Cheers!

P.S. And, given my earlier success with the SoftMakerOffice10(ish)_amd64.deb, while I was writing here I downloaded "opera_12.00.1467_amd64.deb" from their website. The deb file extracted the USR and VAR subdirectories in my downloads folder, and I just dragged them over into root dir to merge all. Ta-da - Opera12 installed and ready for action! Flash intact. Not elegant I guess, but looks kosher :)

P.P.S. Thanks for warning me off SpamAssassin too. I thought it might serve as it is listed as a plugin filter option in T'bird, but will look into your alternative suggestions soon. We will be very happy indeed to see our contract with BigSwamp expire in 2 months time - they were a necessary evil this time around - never had such phishing issues with other ISPs, but as we are charged for the bandwiidth they are not overly worried about their "service" (ranting again - apologies)

Re: Welcome BACK!!!

#81 Post by tazoc »

Well, about that... I'm trying to ease back into things--some days are better than others, so don't expect me to be in top form! I have a lot of PMs and Forum posts to catch up on as well as a Pet or two to update that Barry made suggestions on a long time ago.

lhpup.org is migrated over to the new host, but still might need some attention also...

Just in case the new website should become unreliable, It would be great if someone might be able to mirror lhpup.org/download or at least the next release when the time comes. I'm working on an rsync server that should be more efficient than wget or ftp, so give me a heads up before proceeding with the mirror. ibiblio.org might be a possibility, though I think they recently had an issue with disk space.

Thanks,
TaZoC

lhpup.org is down at the moment [Edit: back up now]

#82 Post by tazoc »

Just a heads up, lhpup.org is down, as well as the web hosting support page, so I can't file a ticket, yet. Their home page is down as well, so I would think they are aware.

Will contact support and hopefully get the server back up soon.
[Edit: lhpup.org is back up now]

Still looking for a mirror. GCMartin suggested drive.google.com, but they don't support Linux yet. :x

I have updated sys-info and report-video-glx and am in the process of testing them on Slacko 5.3.3 and Fatdog 600.

Just a quick heads-up on some stability problems I encountered.
Noticed some glitches when using TextMaker2010 (for Linux) after a few days continual use - weird stalling/freezing behaviour that would permit window resizing - albeit with strange ghosting of backgrounds and other opened windows when moving between desktops, to check for freezing in other applications. Shutdown of TextMaker wasn't possible while it was locked in this state, and there were strange carry-over effects in various other applications. These included not being able to run Startmount preferences (to remove splash screen on bootup) - Startmount would instead run a 'processing drives' dialog before dropping out. Same behaviour from either the splash screen or from the Application menu.

I suspected my filesystem was unraveling somewhere, but I couldn't get "puppy pfix=fsck" to work in any location in the menu.lst (or at bootup) - and 'check partition' option from within Gparted wasn't permissable, either. I'd installed on an ext4 partition to improve filesystem stability. After a few hours of desperation I tracked down a recent mention of strange bootup behaviour while usb drives were attached. I removed 3 flashdrives I had for working data, rebooted - and all my problems disappeared! LH64 is back to working in full swing.
While it doesn't seem to be the cause of my recent problems, is there a way to ensure fsck in LH64?
Cheers

Were the USB drives mounted when the problems appeared? I usually unmount mine when not using them. Of course must unmount a drive before disconnecting to prevent data loss. (Right-click on drive desktop icon, or Menu -> File System -> File Managers -> Drives Manager.)

Please paste

Code: Select all

cat /proc/cmdline
into a terminal and post the o/p. Adding pfix=fsck to kernel line should work. The 'puppy' is only needed for boot menu when booting from the CD.

Booting with puppy pfix=ram from the L64 CD is the best way to use GParted, so that all partitions can be unmounted.

Dont know if this is a hard coded issue or not, but Drives Manager only seems to be able to view 4 drives in each catagory. I have about 9 USB drives on my system and it can only see 4. If I disconnect one that it does see... then another one will fill that spot.
Can this be changed?

Cheers TaZoC for your earlier reply,
sorry I couldn't respond before now - totally borked my L64save yesterday morning, and have been trying to resurrect it (and all my desktop settings etc, etc). At least I've learned from past experience to make copies of my downloaded updates, sfs' etc outside of my pupsave so it hasn't been too painful to get the situation nearly back to normal - but if only I got into the habit of regularly backing up my savefile - especially before a run of application installs...

But back to your queries - I have had Startmount automatically mount my 4 partitions so my wife finds downloading and file manipulation a little easier with it all (Windows refugee - partitions "C"=Puppy, "D"=Data, "E"=Extras, "F"=Fotos...for sda5, sda6, sda7 and sda3 respectively. (Sda1 is an extended (logical) partition with C, D and E, while sda2=swap and sda3=F are logical's also.
The 3 USB flashdrives were present on a single hub, but I dimly recall that they were not actually mounted - perhaps 1 might have been, but it was not accessed by TextMaker when I was having the problems. I don't remember automounting the USB's with Startmount (if it is possible - haven't checked) when the issue first appeared. I certainly remember safely removing them before rebooting and finding the TextMaker unstabiltity resolved. I mention Startmount (again) as it and TextMaker were the 2 applications I found having problems - everything else I tested opened and closed well, and seemed to function fine - including other SoftMaker applications like PlanMaker and Presentations.
And thanks also for spotting my extraneous 'puppy' statement in my menu.lst alternations. I'll try again with it removed, to see if I get the filecheck verbosity on rebooting. Re cat /proc/cmdline, I get

Code: Select all

pmedia=atahd psubdir=L64-514
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I borked the savefile in the process of trying to rip a DVD. Handbrake kept failing mysteriously, and I had no luck with Pburn's copy/shrink function either. So I downloaded "Thoggen" from the slackware64-13.37-salix repository - and My Bad - I halted the install during an apparent stall with the dependency downloads. Nasty "Pid: 1, com: switch_root Not tainted 3.0.3 #1" error message and loads of other error codes on reboot. Actually removing the 'bad' files from the pupsave is waaaay beyond me, so I had to start again from scratch.

Could you recommend a backup regime/ automated backup scheduler? I've made straight copies of pupsaves for backup in the past - but nowhere near as often as I should. I hesitate to use the automated backup pets covered here http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PupSaveBackup and in associated threads, in the 64bit environment (but have my new savefile as 3fs instead of 4fs, just in case it would be acceptable to use).

And what I forgot to mention earlier was a big THANK YOU for the way you've engineered the Wine settings in the menu and puppy file structure - really easy to follow for us noobs (and our spouses). I look forward to working with that in future :)

Cheers!
And keep your feet up, please - no hurry with my concerns. Thanks for your earlier consideration of my "issues" ;)

P.S. Re the DVD - Even a straight copy of the file structure kept failing - the issue was a scratched DVD. Might see about installing "Unstoppable Copier" under your Wine settings - I'm not aware of Linux equivalents with similar success in disk recovery.

Yes, Radky noted a similar bug earlier and I'm working on both.

For now, try

Code: Select all

pmount-puppy
in a terminal. If that is satisfactory, you can revert Drives Manager back to pmount-puppy with this:

Code: Select all

cp -f /usr/sbin/pmount-puppy /usr/sbin/pmount
Puppyt,
Thanks for the update. Sorry about the difficulties. Try snap2 snapshot backup in the Utilities Menu. More info at http://standish.home3.org/snap2

Love the pup, happy U R ok, got 3 X screens working finaly

#92 Post by meeki »

played around with many distros for years Ive settled down with yours for a year now as my main OS for my current DT and my SERVER in the garage for running Virtualbox's

Its just so stinking fast! I love runing Virtualbox on it for any thing else i need.

I got a Torrent server running on the ServerBox I have for all open source files I Like or use. If you wanted Id be happy to host any files you like. people will only get 2Mbps DL from me but files will always have a seeder. I think most people that use Open source stuff seed torrents.

Took me a few hrs to sort out 3 Xscreens running with different backgrounds.

If any one else is having an issue with this its rather EZ to fix
Get your Xorg.conf running so you get a Big white X on the other screen(s)

Goto ./.config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer/ folder and open up pb_Nolcons xml file
File save as pb_Left or right or center. dont care what you name it as long as its pb_somthinghere that you will remember if you more monitors make a pb file for them too.

Create a bash and save it as a *.sh and put in the startup dir
Here is what I have inside my sh in the startup dir

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
DISPLAY=:0.1 openbox &
DISPLAY=:0.1 rox -p=Right
DISPLAY=:0.2 openbox &
DISPLAY=:0.2 rox -p=Left
As you can tell DISPLAY=:0.2 is my Left Monitor as im pointing to the file pb_Left with rox -p=Left

Right is my Right monitor.
The center monitor is not needed. You dont have to declare it.

now restartX

Now you should have backgrounds on the new monitor(s) and be able to L-Click on them and get the openbox menu :) from here you can change the background to what ever you want.

Also if you want any icons you can drag them over from the other monitor and they will work in most cases. If not find the .desktop file and mod it or make one ETC.

Thanks meeki - that's a great 'how-to' on setting up multiple monitors. Thanks also for your generosity in file hosting - I hope someone takes you up on your offer!
If you wouldn't mind, I'd be very interested in hearing your "nuts'n'bolts" in setting LightHouse64 up as a server - as it has *slowly* dawned on me how feature-packed for server roles TaZoC has made this. I gather you use it for both local- and web-serving? No rush in reply, or going to the hassle of another how-to - just some quick pointers would be fine, whenever suits.
Cheers!

P.S. And I might have opened with "Welcome to the kennels", but I see you have really been well buried in the forums for ages -so "Thanks for your first post" :)

TaZoC, I have just two requests for you or anyone else who can help out.
I'm trying to track down a timer I can use for keeping track of my consultancy hours - had a quick launch of "pTiming" I found elsewhere on the forums, but it's 32bit and I can't get it to work. Any alternative suggestions would also be appreciated.
Also, I notice in Desktop>Desktop Settings>Removable Drives and Media; that there's a tab for PDA's and some greyed-out functions for using Sync (?) to connect Palm and PocketPC devices. Wonder if you could provide some more info on activating these functions - perhaps I should just do that sort of connectivity using the usual firmware from within Wine?
Thanks

EDIT: Hmm strange my edit yesterday disappeared from here - again, Iguleder has posted an interesting tip getting 32bit packages to work in the 64bit environment http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 881#641881
Iguleder wrote:For those of you who have trouble running some 32-bit stuff (especially Skype), here's a neat trick I discovered today.

I wanted to run Skype on my distro and it's 64-bit only, with 32-bit compatibility only in the kernel (e.g no 32-bit libraries) - this is a great solution. I had a weird issue - I couldn't run any graphical application and I solved it too.

In my testing I ran a Slackware 13.37-based, x86_64 distro against Slacko 5.3.4's beta.

Step 1: extract a main SFS of a 32-bit Puppy. Copy your .Xauthority file inside, so graphical applications can connect to your X server.

Code: Select all

unsquashfs /path/to/puppy-4.3.1.sfs
cp ~/.Xauthority squashfs-root/root
Step 2: install your stuff, in my case it's just Skype.

Code: Select all

cd squashfs-root
tar xvf ~/Downloads/skype_staticQT-4.0.8.tar.bz2
cd ..
Step 2: bind its virtual file systems and /dev to your running distro's ones, so it can access your hardware and kernel information.

Code: Select all

mount --bind /dev squashfs-root/dev
mount --bind /proc squashfs-root/proc
mount --bind /sys squashfs-root/sys
Step 3: chroot! pwd is used to make sure chroot worked (the output will be"/")

Code: Select all

chroot squashfs-root
pwd
Now you can do whatever you want inside that 32-bit Puppy, as if you were running it! The fun part is that all 32-bit stuff run in a sandbox so they cannot pollute your system (e.g /lib and /usr/lib) - you don't have to install anything.

The whole thing can be wrapped in a script, by the way, so executing Skype is transparent.

EDIT: amazing. Wrote a script which automates this and now I can issue "skype" as if Skype was natively installed.

Warning - Broke Virtualbox install pet removed for sorting issue

Well Id be happy to share some stuff and howto's on it.

Yes I have been lurking on Linux forums for about 4 years. 3 of them on puppy forums. Mostly here at Murga

I enjoy the process of using a search feature and figN out the problem myself.

I will post when I see no answers to a prob I solve and think others might want to know. Save them the trouble.

Hence making puppy tune
http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=259983

AND making .deb's for my car tuning software.
http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic ... e7d344c207

EZ to explain how I ended up Puppy. Car + low budget + Linux + HP = Puppy linux

Onto the Light house specific stuff.
I wanted to used Dropbox cloud storage on my Lighthouse Server in the garage. Then Samba a folder to share it on the network. This way every time a take a picture/video on my android phone it can go to the Server. Also I use dropbox to host files/pictures/html/etc so It allows me to do transfers on my network.

Problim: There is no Dropbox pet for Lighthouse64
Solution: Make a PET :P

dropbox-LH64-1.pet

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12968946/lighth ... 1.4.11.pet

When it installs it puts dropbox.sh in the Startup folder so it will auto rune every time.
If you dont want it to auto start just delete dropbox.sh

It will put a nick icon in the right hand side of the tray when its running.
It will put a menu Icon in the Menu Network Tab

Installing Notes:
The standard Dropbox folder is 2gigs So you may not want this installing under your pup save file. So I suggest you put it in MNT/HOME

When you get to "Chose Setup Type" on the installer Select "Advanced"
Image

On the next screen Select "I want to choose where to put my Dropbox"
Image

Lastly goto mnt/home and then hit open it will make a Dropbox folder for you now outside your save file.

Enjoy.

Next helpful thing I will cover next is seting up your samba.config to share your Dropbox folder.

Ill try to get other howto's up with pets ive made for my Server once or twice a week.
