Hello.

Here are some news on LazY Puppy.

LazImUL Image uploader doesn't work any longer, because imgur.com has changed the API version. API Key in LazImUL is not longer usable to upload images to imgur.com.

I have tried to create an account to get a new API Key, but this isn't that easy. It's now needed to register the application that uses the API Key. I don't want to do this.

If you want to use LazImUL in the future, you'll have to get your own API Key. I won't and I'll remove LazImUL from my private version and also on new releases of LazY Puppy. I will not write applications for web services again in the future, because they won't last/work for long and so, to me, it's a waste of time to write such applications.

For those, who remaster LazY Puppy and want to remove LazImUL: it is installed in /usr/local. You have also to remove the .desktop file and its symbolic link in /usr/share/applications and in /usr/share/applications-desktop-files/applications

LazY use without save file

#467 Post by oui »

Hi

Lazy is one of the most complete Puplets with his adapted SFS packages.

I find I don't need some save file and will just remaster my version so that some minimal private settings and data are included in /root and /etc (added manually by me) and in my mother language (egal what a language) to make exactly the same like in English or German.

And I will not be bothered by some little windows at the start (it is completely silly dilly: we did wish us a system starting fast from CD-Rom without to need the two usual easy little steps login / password but accept to pass different little windows for questions being to be in a menu on demand - Ich meine, es sei absurd, ein mini-Linux zu erschaffen, wo man sich beide kleinen Schritte der an sich vorteilhaften Login- und Passworteingabe erspart, und akzeptiert auf der anderen Seite, zwangsweise von kleinen Fensterchen bei Start und Verlassen des Systems belästigt zu werden, die an sich klassische Menü-Punkte sind oder sein sollten!).

Next point: I did see a lot of helpings figures to manage and convert packages. Is eventually one function available to automatic convert all added files of a session into a SFS (I did not recognize some one till yet)?

Kind regards

Hello oui.

Could you explain this?

What kind of files?

The welcome GUI is file /root/Startup/zz_run_lazyinfo. You can move this to /root/Startup/off - if wanted.

Anything else?

Thank you very much.

P.S.

Please note the Update and BugFix files at second post of this thread. SFS List is incomplete by now. Have to add some new files to this list - later, later, later!

Hello oui.

Could you explain this?

What kind of files?
the old definition of remastering from Puppy according Dougal were:

pup_ro2 + new files without new files from etc (check pls /etc new files!) = new_puplet

the definition of new SFS-package would be:

new files with/without new files from etc (and check pls /etc new files) [BUILD] new_SFS

(= the same, without / over pup_ro2)

how to turn off the creation of save file (it is THE bad question you can't really pass... the welcome, you can forget them! It looks bad, but it works! An error with the save file and

you have a real chaos

shutting down, nothing works more as usual...

Kind regards

You want to shutdown/reboot each and every time without to be asked if you want to save to a save file?

If so, tell me. I'll try to edit the file and send it to you. So, you could do then a new remastered never-save-to-save-file-version.

The "pup_ro2" stuff isn't that easy for me to do. Need to do some research, first --> but do not have time for that within the next weeks.

Hello.

What would you think about an option to keep LazY Puppy automatically updated?

No need to search the LazY Puppy thread for attached update .pet files. Just booting LazY Puppy, connecting to the web (if not already done at boot up sequence) and getting a GUI offering the latest files to download and install by a single mouse click. Also getting online information to the selected update .pet, to be well informed.

Wouldn't that be nice?

So, here it is! The LazY Puppy EsOnU - Easy Online Updater!

After installing the .pet you can do two actions to get this to run:

1. Restart X, it then will be executed from /root/Startup and tries to get connection to directory LazY-Puppy/Updates and LazY-Puppy/Updates/Information. This is for 1 minute every 10 seconds. If successfully connected to the web, the GUI will offer two .pet files

2. Go to menu LazY Puppy and click "LazY Puppy Easy Online Updater" to run this. If successfully connected to the web, the GUI will offer two .pet files

The two .pet Files are empty. They have been uploaded to show how it works. Clicking on "Info" shows Online Information to the selected .pet. The buttons names are telling it all.

After installing these .pet files and exiting the Auto-Update GUI it will give message on restart, that all provided updates are already installed ---> this is kept on a new remaster (save file too).

And best of all:

This should be work also in other puppies (maybe except Fatdog64?) and therefor might be a very useful addition for puppy derivative developers, that could provide downloads using "wget" like it is possible on smokey01.com.

The Files are in /usr/local/LazY-Automated-Update. By having a look into that directory you'll see immediately which files to modify (easy, very easy) to use this one for your own needs.

Any Questions? Post it.

Hello oui.

Today I've disabled the part of the creation of the save file. No more save file is saved, no more question about saving to a save file is asked.

After rebooting a few times during the day, I must say: this is a really nice feature!

I really like this. In fact that much, that I've decided to make this default in the next LazY Puppy Version. Though, I will keep the original file, for users who want to revert this.

But:

When LazY Puppy 2.0.2 Build 0.0.4 is released, I will not continue support for LazY Puppy if using a save file.

Only for LazY Puppy and the SFS files because: LazY Puppy is a SFS Puppy! :D

Thanks for the intellectual impetus.

You want Knoppix with english menu and no Deustch voice? Then get the english iso for the DVD version. I know it is huge. I don't download it. I get it off Linux Magazine cover disk. The latest Knoppix version is on the current issue - although I guess it might not be available in Thailand.

To start the CD version without the voice it is necessary to boot as knoppix knoppix and not the default knoppix adriane.

The Knoppix DVD is always a good standby when Puppy does not have quite what you want - like Frozen Bubble!
I found that mag at the airport last year, with Puppy5 (Lupu?), cost ~ 400 baht. Believe it's also available at Central Chidlom. But I do not urgently need it as someone who is so afraid of Doomday & Armageddon, perhaps next year I will go to Chatujak to get it at 50 baht or less. :-/

Lieber Herr RSH;
Many thanks for your advices.
Of course I will report any problem I found here.
I had remastered LaZyPuppy Osiris with Puppy remaster twice. And it had boot up to
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/displaylink_drv.so.not
and then could not find xorg library.
But I have just seen that there's LaZyPuppy remaster too. hehehehe
Now I know how to make a new LaZyPuppy to work only with my computer, but I still prefer zdrv.sfs because it's much easier to load sfs from menu than to input the name of sfs at booting. Why don't you offer option to have zdrv or not to have, so the user can choose according to their style. Wish to have zdrv.sfs option in your next LaZyPuppy.
The extended and special option is very interesting too but I need some times to understand it.
After remaster I found LaZyPuppy remaster work very well. It has carried all the new config. of applications. ;-).
I had unkeep Fbpanel and Openbox, but they are still exist in the remaster version.

After download of nearly 300 MB of required sfs, Sciplore can now be installed. I had seen this software for many years but now I have to left it behind because I don't know how to work with it. :-(

Yes I had set run action for midi to play with TiMIdity. But I would like to add the whole folder of midi in one click instead of clicking one by one. And Rox filer doesn't have function to add multiple files to the playlist in the RC menu.

Don't trust any Republican, a lot of Illuminatis are there. Good news, I'd just got the Supreme message last month, the Illuminati network worldwide, ~3,000, is going to be destroyed soon. :-)
Viele dank.

Don't use this in LazY Puppy. I'll remove this on next version.

Yes, hehehehe. Do use this!

Yes, to input a name is not really comfortable. But a menu list to select a boot configuration is very comfortable. This could be done using grub or grub4dos or multipup cd/dvd. :)
Wish to have zdrv.sfs option in your next LaZyPuppy.
I'll try to put in an option to choose (check box) inside the LazY Remaster GUI. But if the zdrv.sfs is created and in use, the boot options will not be usable at same boot process. :!:
I had unkeep Fbpanel and Openbox, but they are still exist in the remaster version.
These check boxes do not remove fbpanel or openbox from remaster. This is usable to update the config files of fbpanel and openbox at remaster and to put these updated files into the new remaster.
After download of nearly 300 MB of required sfs, Sciplore can now be installed. I had seen this software for many years but now I have to left it behind because I don't know how to work with it.
Glad to hear, it works. Unfortunately I did never use this program. So, I don't know how to use this as well.

I'll try to work this out and post a solution, if possible.

Hello.

From now on the Function to use the LazY Puppy Easy Online Updater will be activated. It is strongly recommended to install the attached .pet file. Either installing when using a personal storage file or downloading and installing into a fresh and clean system (RAM, NO save file) (RECOMMENED!!!).

LazY Puppy will inform then automatically on available future Upgrades, Updates and Fixes - if connected to the internet, after the X-Desktop is loaded.

Otherwise use menu LazY Puppy, entry: LazY Puppy Easy Online Updater.

RSH

Note!

After installing this Upgrade, do not install any of my applications from the forum. These programs are older versions now!

Edit:

When remastering LazY Puppy make sure directory /root/Downloads/Updates is copied to /tmp/root/Downloads/. This is the download and also install directory of hte LazY Puppy Updates.

When using a save file, directory Updates is kept automatically.

LazY-Automated-Update : thank you for this handy utility, I tested with two french versions of Puppy (Toutou Linux 431 & ASRI Edu 300), everything works.

Two questions:
1 - Is it possible to modify the script to update the list of available packages as soon as new package is installed (without having to restart the GUI). Because, when there is a large number of available updates (which is the case for older versions of Puppy), the user might not know what he has installed in the list of available updates.

2 - Is it possible to allow the user to automatically install several packages? In this case, my first question would not be useful.

She ...

oh, sorry. FZ lyrics...

Yes, this is a handy utility - especially for the use in LazY Puppy.

I don't know, if I can do what you suggest, because this is intended only for new updates and not for older versions of .pet files etc.pp.

To build especially update .pet files I do use a modified version of (dir2pet, makepet). For normal .pet files, I use normal 'makepet'. For update .pet files, I use special 'makepet-web' application.

The 'makepet-web' application creates a .pet as usual. It also creates pinstall.sh script and two text files, one named as the .pet (plus .info.txt) and another also named as the .pet (plus .info-de.txt).

If there is already a pinstall.sh script, it combines the existing pinstall.sh script with its pinstall.sh output script.

The two .txt files including a string, made to show information about the .pet in a Xdialog GUI (to read info online before installing).

If I do create a screenshot manually, named as the .pet (plus .screenshot.jpg), then I can present also screenshots before installing.

The created pinstall.sh script marks the .pet as installed by creating a simple and empty .txt file, named as the .pet (plus .txt) in /usr/local/LazY-Automated-Update/installed. Files found there will be excluded from the GUI at next search for updates.

That's all.

I have now worked for about 16 Months almost every day several hours and sometimes up to 40 hours in a row. I think, I need a break. I have to take a break.

A long term break from coding, working on the forum and also working on LazY Puppy. This might take a few months where I have to do different stuff from puppy - except: I want to use LazY Puppy, finally, within these break from coding etc.

So, we will see, when I'm back.

I have uploaded today LazY Puppy 2.0.2 build 0.0.5 DE, but can't build the English ISO. English users have to wait for 0.0.5 EN until I'm back also.

The same on LazY FReD.

Sorry, but currently there's nothing I can do.

RSH

P.S.

Thanks for the french locales.

I've been trying to understand what you mean by "no save file...LazyPupy is and sfs puppy only".

How does the user maintain the configurations of his desktop and application without a save file? I've been using Puppy exclusively in Live mode (either booting from a LiveCD/DVD or from a usbflash install, with the 2fs files that hold my installed apps and configuration settings residing on my PC's hard drive.

How could I do that without a 2fs file? More importantly, how could I transition to Lazypup without losing all of the apps and their configurations that are currently saved in my 2fs file?

I've been trying to understand what you mean by "no save file...LazyPupy is and sfs puppy only".
I'm using LazY Puppy frugal from USB Stick (USB Flash) and I do create save file at shutdown only for special purposes. At Home I don't use a save file to 100% and in my Drumming Room I use a 512 MB save file only for doing music, recordings, composing and playing the drums.

If I want to have applications permanently in the OS, I do a remaster with LazY Remaster Suite. For data I do use symbolic links to external directories and/or files. If needed, I do expand my make_needed_symlinks script, which creates symbolic links currently for some data based audio players like Aqualung and Amarok.

For data and applications not needed every day, I build sfs files.

I like it this way, even though it needs a bit more time than to save to a save file from time to time. But mostly it is as comfortable as saving to a save file is.
More importantly, how could I transition to Lazypup without losing all of the apps and their configurations that are currently saved in my 2fs file?
This will surely take some time and needs some work to do (at first step, a bit more).

If I would intend to do what you want to do, I would boot a fresh and clean LazY Puppy, RAM, no save file. Then mounting the 2.fs (single left-click on it) and copying all needed/wanted stuff manually into the OS. At first step I would NOT overwrite existing files.

Then make some checks on the applications, if they would run/work. Applications that won't run/work, I do try to run from the console, to get information if some libs are missed etc. Copying this stuff into the OS and try to run the app again - until it works or until I have to give up.

If everything is fine, doing a remaster.

Another way could be, to create an empty directory, copying complete (needed/wanted) content of the 2.fs file into this empty directory (keep the file/dir structure) and then building a sfs. After this loading the sfs with sfs_load and checking the apps to run/work.

LazY Puppy 2.0.2 build 0.0.3 does not use its Extension sfs. So you could build the 'StArtLPx2_Extension.sfs' by yourself to use it for your own apps and files. If no special LazY Puppy boot option is given, it loads the Extension sfs automatically at boot up - just like it would do if it would be the zdrv.sfs. The mount point of the zdrv.sfs is used for this feature. No extra mount point will be used for this.

For the LazY Puppy Boot Options look at the '*.msg' files (F1 - F6) at boot up or at the LazY Puppy Guides Menu in the running OS.

Hope that helps

RSH

P.S.

LazY Remaster Suite keeps almost everything what's needed, except: you are installing special files to /root and/or /etc. Such files must be copied manually to /tmp/root and/or /tmp/etc at remastering - just once. On next remaster these files will be kept automatically.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm sure I only partly understand it, except that it would be complicated if not impossible to duplicate the functionality I have now. I see the advantage of loading sfs files for special applications, but how do you preserver things like browser settings, which are fairly complicated?

When you use a browser, do you load it as an sfs file and then configure it the way you want it each time? How about the bookmarks and passwords? Do they all have to be reconstituted?

The other problem is see with this is that one has to rely on existing sfs files. I use both Rawstudio and UFRaw in lupu528. I see Rawstudio in your list of available sfs files on page 1 of this thread, but not UFRaw, nor x-fprot.

BTW where are these files? When I clicked on the link for the list, I didn't see any links for downloading Rawstudio or Rawtherapie sfs . Can your sfs files be used with lupu 528 also?

LP2_RawTherapee30a1.sfs
LP2_Rawstudio102.sfs

They should work fine in lupu528...but you might need to modify RSH's .desktop files to get them in the menu.
