I'm trying to compile gcc-core
Is there a helpful guru out there who can point me to the problem?

I get this in the terminal window
# ./configure

checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/ginstall -c
checking whether ln works... yes
checking whether ln -s works... yes
checking for a sed that does not truncate output... /bin/sed
checking for gawk... gawk
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: in `/root/Downloads/gcc-core-4.6.2':

Oh well looks like something may have disappeared

I'm using Puppy 5.3 , what versions do you have ?

I get

# ls /usr/lib/gcc/*/*
avr25 avr31 avr4 avr51 include install-tools libgcov.a
avr3 avr35 avr5 avr6 include-fixed libgcc.a plugin
#

Thanks

My installation is a puppy derivate based upon 430/431 running happily on P4-2800GHz 1GB Ram incl devx_430.sfs .
Looking into the slacko devx :

bash-3.2# pwd
/mnt/devx_slacko_5.3.sfs.26332/usr/lib/gcc/i486-slackware-linux/4.5.2
bash-3.2# ls
crtbegin.o crtend.o crtprec32.o include libgcc.a plugin
crtbeginS.o crtendS.o crtprec64.o include-fixed libgcc_eh.a specs
crtbeginT.o crtfastmath.o crtprec80.o install-tools libgcov.a

Laughing Question
You have searched for paths that end with avr25 in suite squeeze, all sections, and all architectures.
Sorry, your search gave no results

or is avr25 a directory ( ls -F /usr/lib/gcc/*/* ) Wink

Package: gcc-avr (1:4.3.5-1 and others)
The GNU C compiler (cross compiler for avr)
This is the GNU C compiler, a fairly portable optimizing compiler which supports multiple languages. This package includes support for C.

You must have installed some weird devx from elsewhere , accidentally uninstalled [parts of] slacko gcc somehow and/or must have installed some cross compilers from elsewhere .
Of course it is a difference in full installations . But since save-files can be several GB in size you might run a frugal install .
Probably there are some ".wh." files to remove .
".wh." files are marker files from the aufs kernel module ; which mark if files are deleted , and may block things .
