That's it.. radeon :) . This bug has been in report-video for ages, I hacked out a different version, or I think tazoc's report-video-glx is accurate.

Frisbee wouldn't connect, I'll try later on my main box, see if it works there, maybe send a diag.

xfce is nice.. all set for compiz

I used this method I developed to install Firefox, grabbed 9.0.1, working well.

Sleek and good-looking, like its originator!
However, rather slow to boot up and operate. Guess that's the Xfce penalty.
Points raised earlier still pertain, viz. no default browser, Elinks unable call up Opera, Opera not in PPM, had to load Opera via Firefox, Flashplayer is wrong one for Opera11.6.
Loadsa other stuff not available via PPM, including Midori. Guess this'll all be sorted out later.
Otherwise, nice - even got my preferred resolution correct.
Later.

Boy was this ever a lot of work!
:D

The ways of the Puppy Jedi are long and arduous . . . :)
Feel free to rant here away from the main kennel . . .
http://puppylinux.info/forum/saluki

This is the potentially best Puppy implementation of Xfce and the control panel is great. In particular because of the familiar layout - good call.
I went straight to desktop and was flummoxed by having to double click icons. However I have been confused by a kipper with no sell by date.

Just to warn people - this is early alpha build. It is for recent computers
but it is a great way to test and offer feedback . . .
This is one of the best ways to grow with Puppy

I would have to download a browser and a few other things . . .
Still not for everyday use. Already very distinctive.

I booted up the live dvd and installed about a dozen pet files, then
installed 4 sfs files.
I downloaded and installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-275.43.run proprietary
driver for my video card.
I rebooted and created my save file on a usb hard drive.

Hi Jemimah

Looks and feels really good - also agree that xfce / thunar is a good choice.

Not sure why - but could not connect wifi - used frisbee and then SNS - both no go.

Posting this from saluki-002.

Will try again - and on another laptop - EeePc and newer Emachines.

Your efforts are much appreciated - Very besr regards - Ray

Install 005 from CD on P4-2GHz Intel system (on sda4).

observations

- puppy installer prompts correctly that sda4 boot flag must be set and starts gparted, but does not inform you that ntfs is a nogo. It just quits.
- sound(*) and video work fine, thunar is different from rox, but is doing its job.
- frisbee setup worked (tested eth0 only), and reconnected at reboot.

anything you want tested specifically ?

Volhout

P.S. tried to test "secretly" at work, but the secret was revealed by the barking sound at puppy startup. Can you plz eliminate that ? It will enable testing Saluki secretly. My home PC (the SIS graphics) failed with 004, otherwise I would be stuck.

I did a manual frugal install to my emachines D620 laptop.
Frizbee doesn't work properly, it sees my wireless network but when I
enter the password it gives an "invalid password" error and then it's
totally euchred, can't see any networks at all.
SNS doesn't work either.
Network manager works but has to be rerun every bootup.

EDIT:Apart from the wireless problem 005 is working very well on this laptop, snappy even.

Finally got saluki 005 going on the XO-1.5 (just used the Lupu synaptics driver ! )
Also had problems connecting to WEP with hex password. Connected OK with network-setup.sh but after a while the connection was dropped and did not connect again.

Luki looks nice but takes some used to. Like double-click on desktop icons but single-click in thunar :? . Terminal opening at / by default, mmcblk volumes not showing on the desktop and other little things.
A whole new puppy :D

Xfce/Thunar is indeed heavier than ROX/JWM though and on a slow machine like VIA7/1GHz or worse Geode LX800/433MHz it shows a lot.

It's because gdkconfig.h is missing. I think woof is eating it but I forgot to check in this release.

Frisbee was thrown in at the last minute, I'll see if I can sort networking out for the new release.

What would be most useful to test is drive mounting, thunar, and all the xfce features.

I can not get a wifi connection with WPA/TKIP in Saluki 005. It always worked fine in other puppies and in 001-004 Saluki.
Xfce4 is fine :)

Barking is essential for testing and reassurance.
Double-click default will only endear you to hardened refugees. One will suffice.
Appreciate the small size, but even the crumbiest default browser (other than ELinks!) would help until all the items in PPM are updated in nluug & ibiblio. Please update FlashPlayer to Opera11.6-compatible version - think mick did this for Slacko? might've been PD for Lupu? Or let folks know how to do their own update?
Could the Xfce Control Panel be reverted to a pre-4.8 version and operated like the full Settings Manager?

I don't think xfdesktop has a single click option. Let me know if you find it.

I think it has only double click. That's why i move all launchers into second xfce-panel at top.
But in next xfce4.10( beta in January? ) they promise to apply single click since desktop will be handled by thunar

To solve the problem where Frisbee won't take your password create the following directory:

Code: Select all

/usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors
