Am having good success with 22. It is a delight to drop a file on the desktop knowing I can start it with a single click. I think the wallpaper chooser bug has already been mentioned (Only current wallpaper shows).
Tiling feature is a bit weird and maybe pointless the way it works just now.

I just figured out the wallpaper problem can be fixed by creating a symlink from /usr/share/backgrounds /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops.

Saluki 22

#3048 Post by einar »

The problem that i have with Saluki is that is now to good :) i have it installed on 3 laptops. luki 18 on a acer and 20 and 21 on 2 hp lap tops with ati radeon grafics. After i actualy managed to install the drivers i feel kinda happy. and for the first time i dont now if I dear to test 22 :) i love the way things are woring now, fast and stable. using synergy to switch mouse and keyboard. XBMC is playing full HD from a windows shares. ( that out mounts on startup ) Spotify is pumping music without any problems. Conky making it look cool. I also had this strange feeling that one day not to far in to the future i will install Saluki on the G73 that has an i7. Just because i starting to like this more than Win7. For me that is a compliment. My opinion is that win 7 is a good os on fast machines.

Yet to test if this will pas trough 5.1( dolby digital / DTS ) audio via the HDMI port.

The second problem I have is with Linux in general and not just Saluki. Its the lack of a good / fast image viewer. The fastest yet is Geeqie but that will not load network shares. ( it will find the /mnt/network/share folder but no files or folders on the share ) On local files Geeqie is fast but i still have to wait for the image to load. The other images viewers i have tested is the inbuildt Ristretto, Gpicviwer and Viewnor from Racy. They will use 3 seconds to load a 16mp image file. Filesize aprox 5MB. I find it so strange that windows 7 image viewers has no problem doing this fast and very fast on image viewers like "www.fastpictureviewer.com/ or www.faststone.org" is this because we lack DirectX ?

anyways have fun testing the 22, i have it installed on a flash drive. Just need to dare try it :)

I've added GLiv image viewer to the repo. It should be hardware accelerated. Maybe it'll be faster for large files.

Doesn't have a menu entry, "Categories=BuildingBlock"

A couple of other things that don't seem to be working:

The panel weather plugin, this has never worked, I think it suffered the same fate as the XBMC 10 weather plugin.

The sensor plugin finds no sensors, this worked OOTB in previous versions, I can't say if it worked in 021, as I don't necessarily use it.

Things I like, single click and the ability to paste on the desktop, great.

I find it to be fast, I've had no major issues, the desktop background was an easy fix, looking good.

We need this xfce 4.10, windows users will find it a familiar look and feel.

Weather works for me.

Sensors might work if you run sensors-dectect in the terminal. It really depends on the hardware.

No matter what I try the weather won't find a city, I'm wondering if anyone else in Oz is having a problem with it.

I ran sensors-dectect that should have been sensors-detect, finds cpu sensor but not much else,
it previously found most everything fan speed and the like but now after I saved and rebooted still nothing is displayed,
this is a upgraded 021 savefile so I will try from scratch and see if that makes a difference.

I've made a new usb install and still no luck displaying the sensors, If I run "sensors" in the terminal I get this:

Code: Select all

atk0110-acpi-0
Adapter: ACPI interface
Vcore Voltage: +1.34 V (min = +0.85 V, max = +1.60 V)

 +5 Voltage: +5.07 V (min = +4.50 V, max = +5.50 V)
 +12 Voltage: +11.86 V (min = +10.20 V, max = +13.80 V)
CPU FAN Speed: 3082 RPM (min = 600 RPM)
CHASSIS FAN Speed: 0 RPM (min = 800 RPM)
CPU Temperature: +43.0°C (high = +60.0°C, crit = +95.0°C)
MB Temperature: +45.0°C (high = +45.0°C, crit = +95.0°C)

k8temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +41.0°C
temp2: +36.0°C
temp3: +41.0°C
temp4: +36.0°C
I still can't get the weather to find a city, is there anyone in Australia that managed to get this working?

It's better to run Saluki-022 as a new install, updating the save introduced errors with partition mounting with me.

save file:Another thing i noticed in saluki 021 and previous versions is this. when rebooting for first time. there was option to use the new better gui pup save app. or the original pupsave file creation. (in 022 i used the new app)

the new app has some great features mainly option to create .4fs ext 4 save file.

the old puppy save option only has ext2 and ext 3 save file ability.

if its possible i would recommend removing or disabling the old save file feature in place of the new app it has better features. this save confusing noobs to puppy who may stumble upon both options and become confused.

if you improve something why keep the old option if you dont have to.

chrome / chromium browser: is it possible for anybody to make a chrome or chromium pet for saluki. both are up to versioin 20 i believe. (atm the only option is an sfs version of google chrome version 12 a version this old poses risks of not supporting ad blocking extensions) might test a pet from lupu or slacko and see if they work in saluki.

HiDeHo,

It might be better to start a new thread with these links if you feel that they need to be resurrected for discussion.

I don't think it would be a good idea to post questions in this thread in regard to them this late in the game.

I'm personally not interested in any of the older versions I prefer to be at the coalface where all the action is

Maybe even just bookmarking the links would suffice.

The weather DB seems to have an issue with Australian cities. It can be made to work if you find the right entry in the search box, but I think the problem is on the weather-channel end.

I think you're right that the sensors applet is borked. I'll take a look at it.

Is pupsaveconfig not coming up on shutdown for you? The old version is only available with the Legacy button or if you shutdown from the console. I was thinking of removing the Legacy button.

Chromium would need to be compiled on Saluki for it to work. Compiling it was way beyond my current skill level last time I tried it (I may have leveled up by now, perhaps I'll try it again at some point). AFAIK no one has ever successfully compiled it on any Puppy. Google does not make a "portable" Chrome version the way Firefox and Opera are compiled specially to work on a wide variety of distros.

Indexing by hand is no kind of a job for a human. That's what google is for.

The new website is ready - only waiting for me to finish setting it up. That should help.

Saluki 022

#3062 Post by Jim1911 »

Hi jemimiah,

Fresh frugal installation on an ext4 partition with new save file. Most everything is running great, really enjoy the new XFCE. Even the latest NVIDIA driver installed fine.

A few problems:
1. HP 5280 appears to install fine, however, the printer cannot print a test page. The correct printer driver is installed. Please consider updating cups to version 1.4.6 which is used in the latest Slacko and appears to be free of problems. EDIT 2: Printer is working, it turns out that it has to be turned off and rebooted for Saluki to recognize it.
2. Tried to set up extra workspaces, however XFCE Workspace Setting does not work. It accepts input but does nothing. EDIT 1: The problem is that the settings dialogue box fails to note that there is another step to take as stated by:
dennis-slacko531 wrote:here's a easy second step. Now right click your bottom panel and click Add.
With the dialogue that appears, scroll down till you see the Workspaces and ... well you'll get it. I'm on a Droid punching this in.
Cheers,
Jim

GLiv image viewer was no success, but big thanks for trying :) I did somthing that I promised myself not to do. Testing Picasa. It worked flawlessy and speedy to. But i cannot use it because of googles : "We own your pictures if you use our software policy"

this is in the EULA :

horrible, wish someone could make a picasa clone :)

einar I think this would only apply to photos you upload to the google site. This is one on the major problems with cloud computing.

For photos that are on your local hard drive or dvd, I don't see how they could even see your photos.
