An archive manager with password protection

#1 Post by New Puppy Fan »

Here is a link to the File-roller - an archive manager with password protection http://fileroller.sourceforge.net/home.html . It has multi language support. Works fine in Mandriva, ASP etc.
Could someone make a DotPup of it?

file-roller requires gnome-libraries, that are available for Puppy, but not recommended in the current state.
So I won't make a dotpup.

But you could use Xarchive from Puppy, and then encrypt the archive

Lobster described how that works:

Hi, Mark. The thing is that I have an archive of files that I used in Windows which is already enscripted with WinZip. What Linux archiver can I use to work with my enscripted archive available in Puppy?

Well, you could install Winzip or Winrar if you use wine, works fine.

Or try this comandline-program 7zip, I converted the manpage to Html (in the menu):
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/System_Utilities/7zip.pup (2.2 MB)

In a console type
7z x test.zip
or for quick help
7z

I don't know if it handles passwords for all formats, but it has many plugins and password-support, so you might have luck.

Thanks, Mark. It's a good idea. A couple of questions therefore.
1. Do I need different file from usr_devx.sfs used in Puppy 1.x.x to use in 2.0.1 to run wine?
2. Is it possible to make a script which could run winzip or winrar within wine by setting Run Action to that script clicking on any_file.zip?

Thank you!

1. no, devx is not needed for wine.

you need:

2. Right-click a .exe in Rox -> set run action -> wine "$0"
