Subject description: Searching for picture slideshow screensaver for lupu 520 & 528

Hello,

Can anyone tell me if there is a .pet for the GNOME Screensaver and if so, where to find it?
Here is where I found the GNOME Screensaver in the Ubuntu Repositories:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/gnome/gnome-screensaver

I want to install into Lucid Puppy 520 and 528.

Thank you in advance.

If you were to install all the required libraries/utilities required for gnome-screensaver to work it would come out to like 65MB, its a crapload of stuff that required for that to work that isn't in puppy.

I am running both lucid 528 and luci 529
I have installed Xscreensaver in both and am very pleased with this product

You might give Xscreensaver a try. It is about 8mb compressed

Ah! Thank you DPUP5520.
That explains why we don't have a picture slideshow screensaver made from the GNOME screensaver.

Thank you, majorfoo
Does Xscreensaver have the picture slideshow option?
If so, do you know where I find the Xscreensaver.pet to download?
I've looked in ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet-packages-lucid/
Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place?

Xscreensaver does have an entry called GLSlideshow, however, I cannot get it to work.
I am using Xscreensaver-5.14-i486.pet, which I created from Xscreensaver_5.14-i386.deb file. It currently contains 198 screensavers and of these, 186 actually work.

hope this helps

Thank you, majorfoo

What would really help is the link to the download. How/where do I get the download?

I thought I downloaded the xscreensaver-5.14-i386.deb from debian but I am unable to locate the exact site where I originally downloaded about a year ago.

I have the xscreensaver-5.14-i486.pet, however, cannot upload it to the forum. size is 7.9mb compressed. Not sure If I could email an attachment of this size or not but am willing to try if you want

Theres an older version of xscreensaver in the repo if you have the ubuntu repo enabled and it's only 2MB but i guess thats cause it doesn't have all the screensavers that yours has probably.

I found the following on debian website

xscreensaver_5.15.2.deb which requires the following

xscreensaver_5.15.2 data.deb
xscreensaver_5.15.2.data-extra.deb
xscreensaver_5.15.2.GL.deb
xscreensaver_5.15.2.GL-extra.deb

These packages are found at

http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/xscreensaver

you will also need xorg_high.1.1 Lucid.pet which is in the package manager for lucid 525 and luci 529

I booted a live cd of lucid-528, downloaded all of the above and they work

one additional note - if you want to get rid of the message regarding running as root, go to the following and download the script. Follow instructions shown on this page

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=173478426&t=49409

hope this helps

I'm looking only for the GLslideshow portion of the xscreensaver. I don't need or want any of the geometric designs or floating bubbles type of screensaver images. Could all but the GLSlideshow of those 198 screensaver image modules be eliminated and the xscreensaver .pet be reduced to a reasonable size in order to include in this forum or be emailed? I know nothing of how this is done so my question is asked in ignorance of how the coding of a .pet is done.

Thank you for the suggestion of how to get rid of the 'running as root' error message.

I cannot get GLSlideshow to work in Xscreensaver. I have tried several versions and no luck. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable in this area could help.

I'm willing to try to get it to work.

Want to attempt to email it to me?

appears too big to email. could not get it to go through.

you can get the full package in xscreensaver 515 from the info I posted above (five debian packages + xorghigh + the script from link provided) As stated, I downloaded each, installed and it works.

Thanks for trying majorfoo

I have no idea how to convert those .deb downloads into .pets. If I had a tutorial or manual perhaps I could figure it out. But, I'm at a loss as to how to convert those files into something Puppy will accept.

So, I'll just keep looking in the forum until I can find a pre-packaged screensaver .pet with a picture slide show option.

Thank you again, for your consideration of my question.
