Richard Stallman - it's free software and it gives you freedom

Richard Stallman wrote:
"Isn't it ironic that the proprietary software developers call us communists? We are the ones who have provided for a free market, where they allow only monopoly. ... if the users chooses this proprietary software package, he then falls into this monopoly for support ... the only way to escape from monopoly is to escape from proprietary software, and that is what the free software movement is all about. We want you to escape and our work is to help you escape. We hope you will escape to the free world. The free world is the new continent in cyberspace that we have built so we can live here in freedom. It's impossible to live in freedom in the old world of cyberspace, where every program has its feudal lord that bullies and mistreats the users. So, to live in freedom we have to build a new continent. Because this is a virtual continent, it has room for everyone, and there are no immigration restrictions. And because there were never indigenous peoples in cyberspace, there is also no issue of taking away their land. So everyone is welcome in the free world, come to the free world, live with us in freedom. The free software movement aims for the liberation of cyberspace and everyone in it."

Subject description: Bravo!

That's great news for you blokes across the pond. I was amazed the first time I visited stallman.org, how totally similar his politics are to mine. (BTW: know any Wall St. Occupiers? While thanking them, do remind them that to some degree they're trying to re-invent the wheel.. 20+ years ago the Green Party was established by much sweat&tears by great activists, and now awaits youngster masses' joining up, so as to unseat the megacorporate Parties which take votes for granted! (Key Values: http://www.gp.org/tenkey.shtml .. "Get With The Program"? )

I love Stallman's constantly updated political links down the left side, his many links to Alternet.org, etc etc!

Definitely with him on the Don't Use Facebook bit..

ps. On my to-do list is a little archive of the various .sig files I've gone thru on this fine msg. board.. one of which featured stallman.org prominently! Hopefully some time soon, will be put in my bio info or such. Amandla!

Yes, as it happens [but don't quote me Laughing ]......and it's not so much re-invention of the wheel, it's more like keeping it spinning nicely.....protest is ongoing until that which is highlighted disappears.......been at it far more than 20 years, and the Green Party is only one of the offspring within 'the movement' - many others are more directly active - but less funded/publicised in mainstream media [Aseed, Critical mass, Reclaim the streets, Earth first, Corporate watch, Statewatch, Protest.net, IPA, Schnews, Squall, Undercurrents...etc, etc]......after all, we aren't organised and have no leaders.... Laughing , Wink
Yes, the wheel's still turning....youth always has the energy to 'go with the flow'
All it takes is dissatisfaction and curiosity....and then direct action!

For your side of the pond the 'Occupy' thing is highlighting Social Security cuts vs corporate greed and the '1%'
