Congratulations Mick,

Frugal installation to an ext4 partition. I just upgraded my 4fs save file from RC2 and it works perfectly, although I had to manually choose the nividia driver. The problem I noted with RC2 has been corrected. Next is to upgrade my Full HD installation which will be my main pup.

Great, :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I did a manual frugal install to a 4gb flash drive which had been formatted ext4,
boot flag set, with grub4dos installed.
On first boot X wouldn't start so I had to choose vesa at a low resolution.
I installed devx + kernel source sfs + NVIDIA-Linux-x86-285.05.09.run

Hi Puppylings,

Barry just wrote in his blog:

"Please don't read too much into the version numbers, 5.3 (Slacko), 5.2 (Wary), 5.2.8 (Lucid). Our puppies follow parallel but independent paths, with different version numbering."

For the sake of users and newcomers, may I suggest a slight change in how Puppies are numbered? How about a preceding letter. For instance:

Slacko 5.3 would be S5.3
Wary 5.2 would become W5.2
Lucid 5.2.8 would become L5.2.8

Unless there is a technical reason, would this not be clearer to many user?

TIA for any consideration.

I never really do upgrades but..........manual frugal upgrade from RC2 to 5.30 on the Athlon XP box.No problems and all pre-installed apps appear to be intact.

Works good on my E-205 but as with every other Puppy my wireless isn't working on the laptop, I tried my pets from 525 and 528 and neither work, and I tried manually adding in the microcode and it didn't work either don't know whats up with it, its the iwlwifi-6050-4.ucode that my wireless requires but for some reason isn't working after being added in.

What do your pets install - a kernel module? These are kernel-specific, so a Lupu version won't work in Slacko.

pet simply adds the iwlwifi-6050-4.ucode into the /lib/firmware folder which solved my wireless issues for 528 as it found and used the microcode for my wireless card however no such luck with 5.3

I notice that tempestuous' package here is named for a specific kernel. Is that the one you are using?

I posted the firmware update necessary for the iwlagn wifi driver in Three-Headed Dog here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 095#568095
but unfortunately Mick did not include it in Slacko 5.3.

Slacko 5.3 main

Still having this problem.

Frugal install to USB flash drive
Save option - save to partition sdb1(the flash drive)

menu->shutdown->reboot or poweroff

Goes to saving session to sdb1 message

Then back to desktop.

Does not poweroff computer or reboot.

If you make a save file to flash drive. no problems.

This only happens if you use save option save to sdb1 (the flash drive)

Congratulation Mick!
Well done.

Is there a change log (over RC2) somewhere?

Here.
Removed superfluous "$" char from /usr/sbin/shutdownconfig, line 578
Fixed template for getopt (woof)
added zdump to main sfs instead of devx

That's it!

None of which will presumably address the wireless problems which I have reported on numerous occasions. I'll be sticking with Lupu for the time being, but I have found testing Slacko on the Pentium D interesting if ultimately frustrating.

Best wishes for the success of Slacko, and I'll keep an eye on future developments.

Laptrop PAE performance report

All is well on a laptop. Apps are running without failure. Desktop performance is simply, great! This is a great accomplishment and contribution to the community.

I've run, both, 5.3 versions side by side., Looking thru the reports, I cannot see ANY performance differences. Yet PAE is seeing ALL of my RAM and PAE desktop appears to be slightly more responsive.

Thanks for this. .....THANKS!
