A save file made on a computer has settings for that computer.
If used on another computer it will probably have problems.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)

My problems with rc.shutdown were due to a corrupted rc.shutdown file and any attempt to fix it was not done due to that.
I ended up copying it from the original in the SFS and that cured it.
The only other change I made was to set the save session value to zero so as to keep the session from being saved while I was running Slacko.
Also when I would clink on the Save button on the desktop, the popup message of "Saving Ram to file..." never would disappear.
That I still have to check.

So far my experience shows that not to be the case.bigpup wrote:About save files.

e.g. When I copied a couple of my own pupsave files [for lupu-526 and Midnightsun-003-tmix made on my desktop PC] to my sons laptop...
They asked me to make new and suitable configuration choices to suit the different hardware [e.g. screensize]...
And then worked perfectly.
He then left for London taking the laptop with him [plus the copies of the appropriate Puppy CD's].
So his laptop is already functioning well with those Puppies using older copies of my pupsave files.
My latest lupusave file includes a functioning copy of the Puppy Phone program, which is why I want to take it.
kernel naming
# uname -r
2.6.39.4
A problem is that Barry uses the same name '2.6.39.4' for Racy-5.1.101, Pemasu in Dpup Exprimo 5.X.8 SMP and Slacko also has same name.

SAVE freaze?
Sometime occurs. I suspect a woof bug.8-bit wrote:Is anyone else having problems with the desktop SAVE button application?
I have a 512 meg save file and after the initial message displays and then the Saving Ram to file.... appears, it never disappears and I do not know if the save to USB has completed.

It will.I thought the final release would become Puppy Linux 5.3
Lucid was briefly known as 'Meerkat' as it developed
as some binaries came from Ubuntu 'maverick meerkat'
'Wary' for pre 2000 hardware has gone into Beta and is Puppy compiled in Puppy
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02538
'Slacko' was originally known as 'Spot'
These are developer code names
Any Puppy using Slackware binaries during the Woof compilation process is known as an Spup - just as Lucid is a Upup
Slacko will as far as I know, become Puppy Linux 5.3 'Slacko'
or Slacko Puppy 5.3 or just Puppy Linux 5.3

Nvidia driver and SDL in slaco
The Nvidia driver Slaco provides is lacking glx support.
I have made Nvidia driver with glx in SFS.
nvidia-glx-sdl-285.05.09-slacko.sfs for both kernel 2.6.37.6 and 2.6.39.4.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=72405
It also contains OpenGL and replaces the SDL in Slaco. The SDL in Slaco main sfs is incompatible with OpenGL.

Re: kernel naming
Guess it would really be confusing if I uploaded Three_Headed_Dog with 2.6.39.4 too....shinobar wrote:# uname -r

Ok, 4 (or more) kernels!James C wrote:Guess it would really be confusing if I uploaded Three_Headed_Dog with 2.6.39.4 too....shinobar wrote:# uname -r

Think they are better to be '2.6.39.4-s' or something.
Not to sound dumb, but I noticed devx for compiling in Slacko RC seems to be missing from the additional SFS files in Slacko's replacement for quickpet. The kernel source SFS is there, but not the devx.
Or am I looking in the wrong place?
My sound being muted on booting is now history and works fine.
Also, when I check /tmp/xerrs.log, I have to say that is the least amount of errors I have seen in any Puppy.
Of course, I have not tried installing desktop widgets.
That usually shows a bunch of errors on configuration files not being found and positioning errors as to configuration files also not found.
But I love to see an xerrs.log that is almost empty.
It tells me you are on the right track with bug squishing.
You must be pretty good at a game called "Bop the Mole".
I am still trying to figure out why a save to the pupsave file is so slow from the desktop when compared to shutdown or reboot.
Also, I did not mention this before, but I had tried to modify rc.shutdown to comment out the three parts that save to the pupsave and that is what initially got me into trouble as commenting out those lines also evidently breaks the desktop save.

Finally I was able to download the RC at a reasonable speed.
I'm running my package builder against it, small packages should arrive soon
I expect most of them to be smaller than those we use now, maybe we could replace some packages with those to save some size.
EDIT: here's a sample: 157 KB, while the package we use now is 284 KB.

Every other distro has one, at least in their repo. I've raised the issue already, but apart from some recent misunderstandings, it gets ignored. We used to have a live discussion by 'nickbiker' the world's leading expert on webcams, kams, cams, w.h.y., but he left the stage a long time ago. His website was still up, though about a couple of years back. More recently, I offered this link to BK:Webcam app? I would have it as essential.

As for savefiles, I have never ever used them, but recently ghost savefiles have been cropping up all over the place. These non-existent files have, inter alia, prevented making FULL installations. BK has found something amiss in the Wary code, so let's hope his new release clears up this 'feature'.
I vaguely remember how it was to be young, keen and thrusting, so to speak. However, apart from Moses, the greatest con trick perpetrated on the human race was by the guy whose name is synonymous with 'portal'. His sin was to become a serial releaser of defective SW in his quest to become the world's richest person - a kind of backdoor world domination envisaged by his predecessor three millenia earlier. Perfect software has been shown mathematically impossible. Notwithstanding, it would be nice if some developers would take the odd week/month off, have a few beers, spend more time with the family, smell the roses. Best inspiration comes when least expected eg in the proverbial 'bath'. The brain is a strange implement; it's easier for it to remember past events, resolve problems, etc when it is not presently engaged on that activity - kind of backgrounded. Limbic system?, subconscious? Who knows!
Clearly defined objectives help. This was the approach selected by john biles.
Accept new input without giving instant smart *ss replies. A lifetime of experience in the sciences suggest that some of the best ideas have come from outsiders who were not carrying the baggage of inside 'wisdom' - like that other great Aussie, Barry J Marshall.
