Links web browser version 2.6

#1 Post by Billtoo »

EDIT:This is the newest versions of Links, there is a problem with versions 2.6 and older so if you want to delete the old version the Puppy Package Manager will do that.

Warning Links older than 2.7pre1 contains some bugs that can result in writing out of allocated memory if Links is running in graphics mode. This can be potentially exploited to attack the computer. If you use graphics mode you should upgrade to Links 2.7pre1.

Thanks to Billtoo for this package. :D

Links is the only lightweight browser that I have found that will connect to Gmail. Often my internet connection is sketchy due to heavy traffic (8:00am-12:00pm). I live in a very rural area and connect through a radio broadcast system. When Opera or Firefox won't connect to Gmail, :( Links will.

I have prepared two menu entries for Links, one which takes me direct to Gmail html service and the other to Gmail mobile service. The second one will usually get through if there is any connection at all.

Just in case anyone else shares this kind of problem I am attaching a .pet with the two menu entries.

Cheers, J

It works fine in every version of puppy that I've tested it in.
EDIT: This is version 2.6 which is the newest at this time.

EDIT: Please see the 1st message in this thread for an updated version of Links and a warning about versions 2.6 and older.

Links --download-directory <path>
gives syntax error. Why?

I've tried the root directory but it won't work.

I've done that. I've tried that. Still get that same stupid error.

Maybe I'm missing something...

Can someone give me an example...

How do I save to /mnt/home?

According to the instructions page above
the program is supposed to use the current folder
as the default.

Have you tried

Code: Select all

cd /root
links forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.php?
then it would do downloads to /root presumably.

It didn't though.

I don't know where it downloaded to at all.

I don't want it downloading to root though because that would eat up precious room on my save file.

Anyway...as a fun piece of info, I discovered a fork of Links, called LinkX

It's basically like Links except it can do tabbed browsing, and it has a forward button.

All features that links doesn't have, strangely.

Homepage: http://linkx.sourceforge.net/

It's way more out of date then Links though. :(

I made a linksdownload folder in /mnt/home, then I opened the terminal navigated to /mnt/home/linksdownload and did links -g, I did a couple of test downloads and that's where they ended up.
So I guess to control where the downloads go you need to open the terminal, navigate to your downloads folder, and start links from the terminal, don't use the icon in the puppy menu or downloads will default to the root. directory.

Thats strange, it works ok for me on the latest version of exprimo puppy?

i didn't need to cd in to any /dir just run in the terminal:
links -download-dir /mnt/home www.google.com
and anything i download in that session automatically has a prepend of /mnt/home/

perhaps some more information on what it is you wish to archive.

Hi.

I have made an sfs of Links-Browser 2.6.

Here is the Links 2.6 sfs download folder at my mediafire account. There you'll find different versions of links as .pet and .sfs. One version only contains gst123 the other version contains gst123, gstreamer-alsa and -ffmpeg.

The small version is about 4mb the bigger one is about 8mb.

The "LP_2" files are made especially for LazY Puppy.
