uploading or creating symlinks in gFTP

I would like to create a new directory full of pets... Most of the pets are available elsewhere in my other online repo, (just a few directories away)...
so, in my new repo, I want to add symlinks to the .pets that I already uploaded elsewhere... Barry has done this with his repos..
Can I use gftp to do this? If not, what do I need?
(I can set .htaccess and so on, no probs, so 'follow symlinks' option for Apache, etc, is not an issue)..
