Not Puppy's Fault - naughty little headphone jacks |
|
I don't consider this a bug in Puppy because it's not specific to Puppy. There might be some non-free drivers that can be installed somewhere, but the Linux kernel I normally use ( http://fsfla.org/svnwiki/selibre/linux-libre/ ) doesn't seem to support this stuff out of the box, and Puppy doesn't either.
It's not something I run into often, but a couple of laptops (Compaq and Toshiba) have Software driven headphones.
I wish I meant something you plug into the usb port. These are the standard-looking headphone jacks, impossible to tell from the same jacks we've seen since people had laptops (or walkmans) until you run a GNU/Linux distro on them. Then suddenly, they don't do anything at all.
You still get sound from the speakers when you plug headphones into these. And you get no sound from the headphones. They're like the headphone-jack equivalent of winmodems, and that's just dirty. I hate to think they'll become more common, except if they do they will surely be supported by the kernel in the future.
If someone else has dealt with these, any tips are welcome. If they involve non-free drivers I doubt I'll stick with those, but I'd be willing to try them while booted into RAM. Shame on Compaq and Toshiba for dumping these cheap, crappy jacks on us, though. Like it's soooo expensive to give us the usual kind?
