No PCI-expresscard support in Lupu-528?

#1 Post by otropogo »

I recently bought a Sabrent USB 3.0 Expresscard adapter and a SATA to USB 3.0 drive connector. The throughputs in Windows were a disappointing fraction of the advertised speeds, but it was a pleasant surprise to discover that under Knoppix, without any USB 3.0 drivers, the drive was detected and wrote almost as fast as under Windows USB 3.0 drivers.

However, Puppy is unable to detect the drive when attached to the USB 3.0 expresscard adapter at all (when attached to the laptop's USB 2.0 port, it is recognized and mounts and performs normally).

Since I don't have any other expresscard adapters at the moment, I can't test any further. But would like to know whether in fact, lupu-528 doesn't support the expresscard bus at all, or whether it can be tweaked to support it. My searches on this subject have been inconclusive, but I assume that, since Knoppix 6.7 (DVD -en) can recognize and mount this drive on this bus automatically (so long as enough power is available to the port) it's not a linux issue, and should be doable in lupu as well...

There are quite a number of people on this forum successfully using expresscards with Puppy, mainly with 3G modem devices. So it's quite clear that the expresscard interface is supported.
So I think it's more likely a case of your particular expresscard device not being recognised or supported.
Since your expresscard is a USB3.0 interface, a fair guess is that you need the USB3.0 driver, available for Puppy versions 5.1 - 5.2.8 here -

After installing the dotpet, reboot (obviously).

If still no success, you should run the "dmesg" command to look for clues, and report anything relevant.

Excellent. Thanks.

Not obvious to me, as many pets seem to work for me without rebooting, or at most, restarting X. But thanks for the tip also.

Sadly, the performance is rather disappointing. I spent some tedious hours testing transfers between hard drives and between hard drives and a fast (Class10, 200x) Dane-elec SD card in a Delkin USB 3.0 card reader. The card claims the Class 10 rating guarantees a minimum write speed of 10MB/s, but in a dozen tries I only came close to that speed once, while copying the Knoppix 6.7 DVD iso of 3.8GB. That copied at 14MB/s. Everything else I tried (several bundles of text files and mixed jpeg and RAW files) clocked in at less than 4MB/s and as low as 2MB/s, a fifth of the promised minimum.

Writes of the same files between two hard drives via the same USB 3.0 adapter ranged from a low of 19MB/s (2,000 text files) through 38MB/s (several hundred large jpeg and RAW files) to a high of 46.5MB/s for a single 3.8GB iso. Hardly stellar, but clearly the slow card writes weren't caused by the USB 3 adapter.

Reads from the SD card to the laptop (writing to the hdd) were faster, at 19.8MB/s for bundled image files.

One strange development was that, after recognizing the the USB 3 drives on the adapter after the first reboot, the driver didn't work on the following reboot,
then worked again after another reboot.

Obvious in terms of the explicit instructions I provided where the dotpet was attached ... but I was just hammering home the point, since there have been way too many instances of newcomers not following (important) instructions provided by dotpet contributors.

... it depends on the type of dotpet - any driver-related dotpet should always involve a reboot, unless you fully understand how driver-loading works in Linux, then you can manually load the driver, yourself.
But again, it comes down to following instructions ... and yes, sadly some dotpet contributors don't give good instructions.

As mentioned previously, the usb3 driver failed to work on the second reboot, then worked again on the third. I made a small 2fs file just to keep there then reinstalled the driver on my main 2fs file. But on reboot failed to work.

I rebooted several times, but without any success. I then tried rebooting with the original 2fs file that had worked successfully twice, and which I had used several hours for testing the usb3 transfer speeds. This time round it failed to boot no matter how many times I tried it.

Without changing anything in the hardware configuration, I booted with Windows7 and USB3 was accessible there. I then tried lupu again by adding a USB3 card reader to the USB3 adapter, it also failed to be recognized. OTOH, both the drive and the card reader worked fine when moved to the USB2 port.

Finally, I ran the dmesg command, as you suggested, on the smaller configuration, the only one that had actually successfully mounted any usb3 devices.

I saved the output, and then rebooted with my main 2fs file to post my message her. And at that boot, for the first time with the larger 2fs file, the drive on the usb3 port was detected, but still no success.

This time (unlike the other two times), there was a warning popup in red (which unfortunately I can't copy and paste):
The ntfs-3g driver was unable to mount the NRFGS partition and returned this error message:
fuse:mountpoint is not empty
fuse: if you are sure this is safe, use the 'nonempty' mount option

So, the inbuilt kernel NTFS driver has been used
to mount the partition read-only

okay
I don't think this is related to the USB3 problem, since several previous attempts to access USB3 also involved the card reader holding an SD card formated as Vfat.

After posting the above, I added the card reader with the 16GB SD card to the USB3 bus, and it mounted without incident. I was able to copy a file from the ntfs drive to it, but couldn't copy in the other direction, because of the "read only" flag.

Then I rebooted, still with the same configuration, and this time both usb3 devices mounted automatically and without any write restrictions....

Since your expresscard is a USB3.0 interface, a fair guess is that you need the USB3.0 driver, available for Puppy versions 5.1 - 5.2.8 here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 853#453853
....
.
I’ve just run a few experiments with the Sabrent usb3 expresscard adapter running under the usb3 pet:

1. boot lupu528 without the adapter, then hotplug the adapter with a usb3 hard drive in one port, a usb3 card reader in the other - no icons appear, pmount does not detect either device

2. reboot with all of the above attached - icons automatically appear on the desktop for both usb3 devices, and a single click on the icon mounts them

3. unmount the devices, and release the expresscard adapter from its socket - then reattach as before - no icons appear, pmount cannot detect any usb3 devices

4. reboot, as in trial #2 - icon for the SD card in the usb3 card reader appears, and the card is mountable, inserting an xd card in the reader also works, BUT, there’s no icon for the hard drive on the other port, and pmount cannot detect it, although nothing has been changed

5. reboot again as above - this time icons for all three attached storage devices (hdd, SD card, XD card) appear on the desktop and are mountable.

6. unmounted the hdd and disconnected its cable from the expresscard adapter, then reconnected it - the icon did not reappear and pmount could not detect the drive again (the cards in the card reader remained accessible)

NB:The spotty mounting of the usb3 hdd is definitely not a power issue, as it has supplementary power via an AC adapter providing 2000mA of power at 12V, and is capable (being a 2.5" 320GB drive) of running off the expresscard adapter (which also has supplementary power via a USB2 port) even with the card reader running on the second port.

Is this an issue with the usb3 driver, and if so, is it remediable? If this is the only way one can get the usb3 devices to work in Puppy, even if only sporadically, then it appears one has to boot with the USB3 expresscard adapter installed, and any usb3 devices one wishes to use already inserted in its ports.

It appears to me from these tests that there are two issues with the usb3 driver. The first is that it doesn’t support hot-plugging of the usb3 devices, and the second is that it is somewhat unreliable in detecting them even when they are attached at bootup. But perhaps I’m misinterpreting my results...

Update-Sept.29: further testing shows that USB expresscard must be both inserted at bootup AND have devices attached in order for the latter to be recognized by Puppy. Once the recognized hard drive is unmounted and removed, it can't be remounted except by rebooting.

The card reader is more flexible. It needs to have at least one flash card inserted at bootup to be recognized, but after that, flash cards can be removed and replaced and mounted without rebooting.

Not a great situation, but definitely better than no USB3 driver at all.

With the Windows driver, everything is hot bootable.
