Manual frugal installation on an ext4 partition on Dell Inspiron Laptop. I upgraded my 4fs save file and everything appears to be working. So far it's been fast and stable. :D

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Jim

I burned the iso to a DVD+RW.
I downloaded and installed ati-driver-installer-11-12-x86.x86_64.run
I downloaded and installed Google_Earth-6.0.3.2197-luki.sfs

Dpup Exprimo SMP, version 5.X.10.3 on Tue 20 December 2011

I did a manual frugal install to an hp desktop pc.
I can seem to get the proprietary nvidia driver to install.
I do all the usual stuff and no matter what the driver used always
turns out to be nv.
I was able to install the ati proprietary driver on my netbook.

Billtoo. If you try to install nvidia kernel module from commandline: modproble nvidia, what you get ? Any errors ?
Do that in console state after logging out from X. You can then remove the module, by rmmod nvidia.

After trying to install the nvidia normal way and after booting X, you could check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and post it also. Maybe there is something relevant. Not sure of course.

I started again with a new save file.

Modprobe nvidia gives the error FATAL: module nvidia not found.

The proprietary driver compiles without giving any errors, then I run
xorgwizard and choose the nvidia driver, then xwin to get back to the
desktop, report video shows:

Firefox is also giving an error, I noticed on the netbook too.

Billtoo. I meant that you modprobe nvidia after you have compiled proprietary driver. You cant have kernel module until you compile it.

Dbus error. Okay, it looks like I have missed it when woofing. Probably fixed by installing dbus. I check what package I have used before, test install it and check the dbus errors. If it fixes the dbus error problem, I will upload UPDATE pet and fix couple of menu entry icons also.

Hi pemasu

Many thanks for this new pup to try....

Manual pristine frugal install on my HP550....

In startup dialogue I chose "Probe" and just got a GSD (Grey Screen of Death)

so started again and chose "Choose" and selected the Intel driver - got message saying the i-810 driver had been removed and then GSD again - but this time I pressed "Enter" and the GSD went away and the desktop appeared....maybe its asking for some sort of hidden user input???

B43 wifi report - checked with lsmod - NOT loaded automatically - force loaded with modprobe b43 and checked dmesg and looked OK so put modprobe b43 into rc.local and rebooted - Frisbee started up, found the wifi and found my router and here I am online.

Cheers & thanks again

Peebee. i810 xorg driver has not been removed. But it is moved to some other location. Barry has posted about this in one of his woof blog posts. When the driver is needed, it is available by using xorgwizard. The automated detection of the need seems lacking though.
But I believe it is as Barry has organized it to behave. You need to use xorgwizard and probe or choose and select the i810 driver. Then the driver will be copied to the right folder back and it is available when booting to the X.

I've never needed that step before.

Google Earth works now too, very important :)

different eXprimo savefile problem to look at

#372 Post by soundNICK »

pemasu

This 5x10.2 is working s-ooo well... one last problem I have now
is again with /savefiles/... only one savefile is possible at this time... or...
with two or more, I get the freezing at startup in savefile choose
menu.

dPup-Squeeze eXprimo-5.x.10.2 (name ?) is still officially a
development version_ so_ the two savefile problems Ive posted
about are really of no consequence to testing the actual program
itself. Still, this might be something to go at top of "stuff to fix for
final version" list... multiple savefiles are common with other
puppylinux, and people will not be happy to see this broken I think.
Again, for now in development version, it is fine.

Since this post addresses a different problem with that savefile
startup menu and screen, I will ask again, is there possibly some
setting or switch or procedure to get this distro to recognize and
work with more than one eXprimo specific savefile in /mnt/home ?

[ Here is a review of the two savefile problems Im aware of...
the first involved more common problem of files from other
distros interfering... this is fixed by moving them to no read dir.
I did that, and eXpriimo worked /until/ I made a 2nd savefile...
now... with two eXprimo savefiles at /mnt/home the freezing happens
again... its the same breakage, but for two slightly different reasons. ]

sorry if this repeats too much... I wanted to make it as clear as
possible for when you get time to look at it... for now, not worth
worry over ... it just isnt crucial to trying this most excellent distro.

need to melt snow for water ? Just hold pan near computer while
I let out all this hot air : - )

happy holidays

That savefile problem might be woof version related. I will test that with 5.X.10.3 version. Remember that I usually use the latest woof version available when I start to create the next version. Now I have created 5.X.10.3 with woof2. My first woof2 build.

Hi pemasu !

Tested the new 5X10.3 version on Usb stick ( using a Toshiba satellite 3000 single-core processor laptop ) .
I used the savefile from version 5X10.2 version in this new one .( copied it to usb and upgraded it ).
Started well (into Enlightenment desktop ).... but very, very heavy CPU usage ... (does not do that with the former version ) .... to heavy.
After shutting saving session and shutting down ..... i restarted again but could not get in to my Enlightenment desktop. Typing " xwin JWM " helped me log into JWM desktop envirement .
Tried to switch to Enlightenment again ..... no go..

Just want to report my experience....
Cheers !

backi. I suggest to try also without previous savefile. Many times the savefile usage from previous build makes the difference ie something goes wrong. Maybe it is due to whiteout files or ... This version uses different woof, recompiled kernel etc....

Hi pemasu

On further investigation it seems that the screen that fails to display is the choice of screen resolution which appears after "Probe" is chosen - although the screen is hidden pressing "Enter" selects the default resolution and then the desktop appears....

Cheers

Hi pemasu !

This is what i did.
Burnt iso to DVD . started Dpupexprimo 5X10.3 into JWM desktop as it automatically does.
Used Universal Usbinstaller to install to Usb stick.Shutdown ,created savefile saved JWM session on Usb, Shutdown ,rebooted onto Usb.

Login into the last saved JWM session . Wanted to change to E 17...did not work.Went back to Jwm desktop (by typing in " xwin jwm " ). worked.
Tried to change desktop with Windowmanager .Could not get access to WMswitcher.

Wlan was found .But could not find wireless networks .
So far... did not further investigate .

There's no need for 'Search with pfind'
when you have a folder selected.
'Search inside' is what I use.

There are newer versions of apps available.

Talking clock is version 131

Bacon Recorder is 235

You accidently put Zigbert's 0.2 of pclock inside,
rather than the modified version 0.3.5

You didn't install my progam folder_convert properly.
You put in an extra /folder_convert in the path
That's why it does nothing when menu item is selected.
