This is a good suggestion.
There is a tool which is now shipping inmost PUPs and most of the time is found via PUP's Menu "Report-Video-GLX" (I believe the next SLCACKO may have it in its Menu)

Hope this helps

Hopefully "report-video-glx" will be in next SLACKO via Menu NOW, its only available from a terminal prompt

Hello, fellow Brookdalers :)!

01micko,
When I (finally, sic!) read about the solution, I also did try to put that disable-composite-conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, but I chose to edit xorg.conf with the Trues and Falses of DRI and Shadow, instead of putting the suggested .conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.

So, I've been experimenting with this the whole day (geeky, ain't it?) and have come to the conclusion (right, or wrong) that, even though, slacko's Xorg supports the use of .conf-files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, xorgwizard does not - it constructs its xorg.conf in its usual way.

So, I edited /usr/sbin/xorgwizard according to the following .diff-file (In my current opinion  it's the optimal placement for a call to a Brookdale-modifying-script):

Code: Select all

--- xorgwizard_org	2011-08-14 02:22:48.000000000 +0200
+++ xorgwizard	2011-09-10 21:21:16.000000000 +0200

Ok, I'm aware that this hack only takes the "DRI" and "Shadow"-parts of the suggested solution into account (leaving the disabling-compositing-thingy out). If you'd think this could be a way out of caleidoscopic-patched hell for us Brookdalers this home-brew solution allows for later hacking of the BROOKDALE-script .... (and, provided you'd think any of this makes any sense, at all, - if you'd think the disabling-compositing-conf-thingy could be needed in some situations, I'd happily incorporate it ....... :))

Hi 01micko et al,

4.99.4 is working so well for me that I am expecting to use Slacko full time for the next month and although I have no particular tests in mind I will be able to report back if I should have any stability or other problem.

In Lupu 5.10 I can use some portable Linux programs:

VLC 1.1.1 .................(seems fine in Slacko as well)
GoldenDict 0.9.0.....(seems fine in Slacko as well)
PeaZip 3.1 ...............(seems fine in Slacko as well)
DosBox 0.73............(fine in Slacko after installing mesa-7.6-q1)
Gnote 0.5.2..............(did not discover how to make it work in Slacko)
......................also tried a much later pet gnote_0.6.2.pet without success.

I understand that Slacko is not Lupu and as I have now opted to use an alternative program to Gnote I have not got a personal problem and I only mention this just in case it may be of interest.

I got the portable programs from http://portablelinuxapps.org/
Unimportantly I'm using NoScript in SeaMonkey and I couldn't find the "usual button" to allow Forum access to enable the URL as a link

My regards

Jasper tried the following portable linux apps
Which I think we should support as much as possible
http://portablelinuxapps.org/

xaralx xtreme (still prefer to full inkscape)
spideroak (some sort of cloud backup)
Skype (now in further decline after being sold to Redmond)
Libreoffice (the business)
Gimp 2.7.2 (on the way to the excellent 3 series . . .)
focuswrite (for the writer who has nothing)
Dia (diagrams)
Coccinella 0.96.18 (IM)
BlueGriffon 0.8 (visual HTML)
Bluefish (HTM Editor)
Audacity (did not check this - should do but loaded OK)

Please report non working apps to portable linux apps

Hi pri

There was a puppy called KitchenPup - 412 TurbuPup based, if I recall correctly,
that did exactly what you want. Had Opera too - nice.

I used it on an old laptop for a time and it worked very well.

It gave the choice of upside-down or normal screen - fantastic.

Maybe a look into the Xorg.conf or sfs may provide the knowledge required
for use in other puppy's.

HTH - very best regards - Ray

Can you put the upside down command in a script/file in the startup folder?

Time to get Slacko..

Certainly is! :D
Manual frugal install with pfix=ram on my usual test machine:
Sempron 3000+ 1.8Ghz
1.25 GB RAM + swap (1 GB?)
Radeon 9250 gaphics

I like the initial apearence, although you could have add some more slick cursor theme.
I like that it has seamonkey inbuilt (downloaded flash, youtube works!). LAN auto-setup.
PEqualizer is the best thing ever! :)

The first time wizard re-ran after restarting X, not a big deal, but maybe it should apear just first time?
Downloaded mesa package, after restart X Xorg wouldn't start, but after I re-ran xorgwizard, then manually edited xorg.conf to include Load dri line, X started but as usually with newer pups I don't get a decent acceleration with my card :(
Since you have both chatzilla and Xchat inside you can cut one irc client if you want.

Other then that, so far things work smooth, I think I'll test pemasu's gimp package next :D

Hi 01micko

Just a short report about media players and dvb-t (triggered by what's called the Digital Switch Over in the UK when we go 100% to dvb-t.)

gnome-mplayer on slacko does work with my usb dvb-t tuner but seems to have some synch problems between sound and picture (but its better than gnome-mplayer on lupu which doesn't work too well with dvb-t)

smplayer has worked well in the past for me so I attempted to install it on slacko using ppm but it detected and wanted to load so many dependencies that I gave up (should it be in the slacko repository??)

I then tried to install the lupu version - this showed it needed a library libaudio.so.2 when it was run from the console so I copied this across from lupu (actually libaudio.so.2.4 symlinked to libaudio.so.2) and then the lupu version of smplayer worked fine with my af9005 usb dvb-t.

So I guess my question is - should libaudio.so.2.4 and its symlinks be in slacko if it means that lupu pets will work?

Cheers

Tazoc has developed a great way to give a comprehensive hardware report
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 454#455454

Maybe the Slickpet pull down menu 'File' could be more comprehensive with this feature added? :)

Is there any need to follow the SlickPET recommendation of XORG_HIGH on this system? (see reports)

gcmartin, your report looks fine to me.

As far as installing Xorg_high, (note I will reword that as we are just going with the "mesa" monicker) it is only a recommendation and may improve video performance, however if you are satisfied with your current video performance then there is no need.

peebee,

Smplayer in the Slacko repo does require qt which is a large package. You can also get the qt-sfs instead, smplayer will run fine with it, but you'll still get the dependency message, ignore it and don't get the deps if you use the sfs.

The new pupdial gui is just a start, eventually all apps will be fixed to accommodate 800x480 res.

Seamonkey 2.4 Beta 2 with Flashblock

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -2.4b2.pet 18M

Dev package..
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -2.4b2.pet 5M

I imagine sm-2.4 will be final when we go final so it will be in Slacko B3, due when Barry makes a new woof  It includes Flashblock-1.3.18 but there is no hard coded profile in /root. This is a compiled version and wont update. Compiling saves a couple of M in the iso.

Have fun!

Thanks Mick,

Installed 2.4 went very nicely. Flashblock working.
I had Chrome set up (an eventual ad supported browser from
advertising giant Google) and Seamonkey ousted it successfully.
Lucid had a browser swapper bottom left. Slacko not?

Chrome worked well.
I tended to use Seamonkey and it has been running successfully.
Really need to check a long bit of streaming flash . . .

Been using transmission, works OK.
Had no problems with ATI crystal driver.
Tried to use FFConvert (unsuccessfully mkv to avi)
but am not familiar enough with the program to compare . . .

I haz a secure Seamonkey
Yeah! - many thanks :)

I am posting from Links right now (text mode browser). I might even include this.. it makes Slacko useful even if you can't get X, there is also a tiny script by going-nuts that works for IRC chat, it's brilliant stuff!

The motivation is Raffy. He can't get a stable X on his new laptop, but with this and a few other tools it will be possible to get an appropriate driver for X, in Raffy's case the ati-fglrx driver. Of course this depends on net connection..

Sadly it is not in development anymore. But a Check guy made a DOS browser that could be launched without any Shell or Windows.

And it worked good. Showed pictures and movies and could handle HTML and so on.

Arachne or similar name. Hopefully there are modern varieties of that thinking. Links maybe is one then?

Arachne was a Czech DOS browser. I still had a copy somewhere. It was extremely tricky to use. But it was bought out by some nasty multi-national and assimilated into the host. Links CLI works OK, though.
