Realtek RTL8188CE 802.11n wireles PCI NIC

#1 Post by LuckyMax »

I have a Toshiba NB505 netbook with Realtek RTL8188 wireless LAN 802.11n nic, and use a
Samsung 4G LTE mifi with it. This netbook came with Window 7 and Norton Anti-Virus installed; with the constant (and I do mean constant) up- dates, patches, fixes, security notices, etc. all my prepaid data is being used up on downloads I don't want or care about. I'm starting to feel like a badly payed employee of Microsoft. After many attempts at turning off these "services", and weeks of being interrupted continually by notices of Security Risk! and Your Computer May be at Risk! and other dramatic nonsense, I decided to use some kind of Linux via usb stick and Puppy is the one that likes my netbook most.
Problem is it can't see my wireless and has no driver for it. I have tried Lupu 525 and Wolfe 027 with no luck (I really love Wolfe).
I went to the Realtek website and downloaded a linux driver for my nic; it is a tarball. I haven't done anything with it yet, but I have cruised this website and searched out various posts relating to wireless. I haven't found exactly the info I need.
So, here is my question: Can I install this myself, just as any other software in tarball form, or is this beyond a beginner not familiar with the inner workings of Puppy?
Also, is there a puppy out there that some one knows for sure will work with this Realtek nic? (I tried the ndiswrapper but no success; also, desperate, tried each of the other modules in the wireless wizard. No go.)
Any help or information at all will be deeply appreciated as I am ready to throw my netbook and Windows 7 out the nearest window.

Generally, yes, the learning curve is steep before you can compile your own kernel module (driver) ...
... but the work has been done for you already -
I think you need the Realtek r8192ce_pci driver. It's available for Puppy versions 5.2.1 to 5.2.8 (Lucid) here -

Don't confuse the "ce" version with the "se" version.

And of course, don't attempt to install this driver in any other version of Puppy than it was compiled for.

re download of rlt wireless driver

#3 Post by LuckyMax »

A million thank yous. Some one told me that Puppy forums are among the very best and friendliest and they were right. I should have looked more closely at the Puppy site. I have downloaded the driver and will give it a try today.
You are right about the learning curve. I extracted that tarball late last night and could not make much sense of what I had, so I just left it and went to bed. (A warning to any who read this: Never try to do anything with your computer when you are sleepy.)
I will post the results from the pet driver here for anyone having a similar problem.

Toshiba NB505

#4 Post by Robmitchsr »

I can't get the wireless network to work on my Toshiba NB505. I have the same wireless card and can't make it work. I am new to Linux so everything is Greek to me. I like Puppy. I also tried JoliCloud and Ubuntu 10.10 Remix and I couldn't get the wireless card to work in anything. I would like to get it working with Puppy which seems to be the easiest for me to use.

Can someone tell me the steps to get and install the RealTEK driver? The NDIS wrapper didn't work either. I was running Windows 7 on my Netbook but it is so slow the system is useless. The netbook runs pretty nice on Puppy but I have to have it connected to a wired network. I see that other people have had the same problem but I didn't see the actual steps to follow to resolve the problem. A generic overview doesn't help me because I am unfamiliar with Linux and the Linux commands.I would appreciate any assistance you can give me. Thanks.

Realtek Driver

#5 Post by Robmitchsr »

r8192se pci-k2 6.33.2.pet http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/pupp ... ges-lucid/
The ce driver wouldn't load so I loaded the se driver

modprobe -l | grep wire >wireless.txt r8192se_pci.ko

I downloaded and installed this driver and the se module loaded but my wireless card still isn't working.

iwconfig - No wireless extensions

Network Controller: RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Internet RTL8188ce WiFii

etho ethernet r8169 Module PCI Realtek Semiconductor RTL8101E/TRL8102E

my wired connection works OK

uname -a > uname.txt Linux Puppypc 2.6.33.2

I am not having any luck making this work on my Toshiba Netbook NB505. Any ideas?

Robmitchsr...welcome to Puppy mate.

Please tell us your exact Puppy version.

Going by this Lucid 528.05 should work.

" Re: Toshiba NB505 Wireless won't connect
This worked for me:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lexical/hwe-wireless
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rtl8192ce-dkms
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

The last command (upgrade) is necessary to get the NB505 to work. It took about a half hour just for it to upgrade, but now it functions properly.
Obviously, you need a wired connection for the above commands to work.
Thanks guys; this forum has saved me more times than I can count! "

To enable or disable wireless
communication, use the Hot Key Fn + F8

Sure it is on???

And use Frisbee.
