The Firefox icons both on the desktop and the menu open Aurora the same as the "default browser" menu entry does.

Same as above with Thunderbird, the icons open Miramar.

Those are the code names Mozilla uses for these releases.

In addition, from wikipedia:
To allow distributions of the code without using the official branding, the Firefox source code contains a "branding switch". This switch allows the code to be compiled without the official logo and name, for example to produce a derivative work unencumbered by restrictions on the Firefox trademark (this is also often used for alphas of future Firefox versions). In the unbranded compilation the trademarked logo and name are replaced with a freely distributable generic globe logo and the name of the release series from which the modified version was derived. The name "Deer Park" is used for derivatives of Firefox 1.5, "Bon Echo" for derivatives of Firefox 2.0, "Gran Paradiso" for derivatives of Firefox 3.0 and "Shiretoko" is used for derivatives of Firefox 3.5. Derivatives of Firefox 3.6 are referred to as "Namoroka". The codename Minefield and a modified version of the generic logo stylized to look like a bomb is used for unofficial builds of version 3.0 and later, and for nightly builds of the trunk.

Distributing modified versions of Firefox under the "Firefox" name requires explicit approval from Mozilla for the changes made to the underlying code, and requires the use of all of the official branding. For example, it is not permissible to use the name "Firefox" without also using the official logo. When the Debian project decided to stop using the official Firefox logo in 2006 (because of copyright restrictions on its use incompatible with the project's guidelines), they were told by a representative of the Mozilla Foundation that this was not acceptable, and were asked either to comply with the published trademark guidelines or cease using the "Firefox" name in their distribution.[155] Ultimately, Debian switched to branding their modified version of Firefox "Iceweasel", along with other Mozilla software.
Tony,
Kernel version shouldn't affect compatibility. Compatibility is more affected by shared libraries dependencies. I've never tried mixing with Slackware packages - but I've tried with some Debian packages (the "lenny" branches) and they worked fine. Why don't you give it a try and let us know?

cheers!

Well I took your advice. I loaded flightgear 64 on slacko and moved it
across onto fatdog 64.

Tested it out with ldd -v and got it down to :-

libdbus-1.so.3 => not found
libhal.so.1 => not found
libsvn_client-1.so.0 => not found
libsvn_ra-1.so.0 => not found
libsvn_subr-1.so.0 => not found
libstdc++.so.6 (GLIBCXX_3.4.14) => not found
libstdc++.so.6 (GLIBCXX_3.4.14) => not found
libstdc++.so.6 (GLIBCXX_3.4.14) => not found

After that I crashed the system playing with versions of libstdc++.so.6.

Will do a bit more googling and try again.

Regards Tony

Haha, you choose a difficult one. I've never gotten flightgear64 to work so far.

I can only add one thing: libdbus is available as a pet in the PPM.
Others you must get elsewhere. Fatdog's libstdc++ is one version older that requested - if you get a newer libtsdc++, don't replace the original version, instead put it somewhere else and use LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

cheer!

Hi Icyos

I'm only a noob - but I think you need some 32bit compatibility stuff.

I'll try and find a link and hopefully some info.

BTW - FD64 is really good - solid and fast

Best regards -Ray

Think this is it:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... g/sfs/500/

fd64-32bit-libs-6.sfs

If I am not mistaken - that should let you use 32bit pets.

Booted and running LiveCD for the FATDOG RC2.

What was the resolution to this? Seems that this was somehow related to fonts.

Thanks in advance

Fatdog comes with a built-in screen recorder. Menu: Graphics --> Screencaster.

Ray, on behalf of kirk - you're welcome :)

Gcmartin, not that's not a font problem, more like incorrect configuration of pango/gtk, but I never have that kind of error before. Have you check your ISO's md5sum?

cheers!

Psip2

#39 Post by Lobster »

Hi guys

Eric has reported that Psip is not working on on Fatdog64 :oops:

The Psip program is being updated (more updates hopefully this weekend)
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 750#555750

A Quickstart guide to the upgraded program is here
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Psippy

If Pjsua (the PSIP 'engine') is compiled for 64 bit it should work?
Puppy Raspup 8.2Final 8)

Xine and Mplayer bugs?

#42 Post by Barkingmad »

Hello again

After my earlier post I am defiantly using RC2 now.

Some observations after playing with multimedia stuff on Fatdog.

Xine won't play a certain VOB file ripped from DVD -- the error is "Input plugin failed to open mrl". I expect the log file would be helpful but I don't know where it should be so I could copy and attach it. The file plays alright in gxine 0.5.9 in Puppy 4.3.1 and in Mplayer from the PPM in Fatdog.

A bit more serious, but only under JWM not OpenBox. I can't use File Open from the Xine window. Sequence as follows

Code: Select all

With no file loaded > Right click in Xine window > click "open" > click "file".
The first time I do this the pop-out menus simply disappear and nothing seems to happen but if I repeat the commands xserver crashes to a text console, at least I assume this is what has happened as "xwin" restarts the desktop etc.

I have also tried Mplayer from PPM. This seems to run OK under OpenBox -- It shows odd errors but media plays well -- but fails completely with JWM. The video windows opens with a pale blue fill and the shape of the control window appears in solid black but X is "frozen" eg the mouse pointer moves but nothing responds to it. Ctrl+Alt+Del kills X and "xwin"restarts it after this has occurred.

Both these bugs seem to be fully repeatable for me so I might be able to get some logs etc if you tell me what to look for.

This isn't meant as any sort of criticism only I thought you might like the report.

Still think you've done a great job.
Will

Thank you for the report.

Possibly an access issue. Try launching Xine from terminal by typing "xine" (not xine.sh) and open that recalcitrant file. Let us know whether it works.

Yes, that means it's possibly an access issue.

JWM hasn't been tested (or updated) for a very long time, and probably contains a lot of bugs.
I can't use File Open from the Xine window.
Confirmed bug.
I have also tried Mplayer from PPM. This seems to run OK under OpenBox -- It shows odd errors but media plays well -- but fails completely with JWM.
Confirmed bug with you use gmplayer (the "graphical" mplayer). If you start mplayer from terminal "mplayer filename" it works.
Both these bugs seem to be fully repeatable for me so I might be able to get some logs etc if you tell me what to look for.
All in all, looks like jwm bugs. Solution for the time being: use openbox. I'll see whether we can get jwm updated - but no promises. Even if it does get updated, jwm will probably be as never tested as openbox (unless someone like you volunteers).

cheers!

jamesbond: thanks for your feedback -- some results as requested.
Xine won't play a certain VOB file ripped from DVD -- the error is "Input plugin failed to open mrl"
.
Possibly an access issue. Try launching Xine from terminal by typing "xine" (not xine.sh) and open that recalcitrant file. Let us know whether it works.
I have tried running xine from the terminal as requested and the file in question then plays.
For completeness -- the file is one chapter of a James Bond movie and was ripped in Windows. I have also tried playing a DVD (but not that particular title) directly from the drive and it seems to work OK.

Thank you for confirming the other issues are known -- I was thinking they might be somehow related to my hardware as the ATi card I have doesn't seem very well supported under Linux (except Fatdog!)

All in all, looks like jwm bugs. Solution for the time being: use openbox. I'll see whether we can get jwm updated - but no promises. Even if it does get updated, jwm will probably be as never tested as openbox (unless someone like you volunteers).
Thanks for the vote of confidence :) but I don't think I really have the time and certainly not the code skills to try and debug JWM :lol:
Perhaps a mention of the issues with it in the release notes or the welcome page would help others?

Thanks again
Will

Lobster, I will look at the pjsua later.

barkingmad, I don't expect you to debug jwm :D - but none of us use jwm often enough, so it doesn't get a lot of attention. What I mean is it would be good to have a regular jwm user that can point things out to us. That being said, jwm isn't actively updated nowadays, so ...

Anyway, I've compiled the latest jwm for you, it's located here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... x86_64.pet, if you can tell me whether this fixes most of your problem (or not), that would be good.
cheers!

Hi kirk and jamesbond,

Thanks for the info, scribus is now up and running.

I'm getting to like this 64 bit pup, no problems on my thinkpad T61.

Hope we do not overwork you.

First, I went ahead and did a frugal install of RC2 on the dual-core reported on the first page of the thread.... been working fine and no real problems to speak of.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 992#555992
Second,RC2 live multi-session dvd on a different box.Same result,everything working on initial boot and nothing really bad to report yet.Looks good.
