One thing I noticed right-off looking at your picture, is lack of a "help" button. The same with Psip -- well, I am trailing behind, I looked at it about a week ago, version 1.0 I think -- and I immediately noticed the main window lacked a "help" button.

Cos, newbies to Psip or voip in general might want some simple intro to what it is all about and how to get going.
Hi Barry, gcmartin,

Below is a screenshot of Psip version 1.2, (although a number of the iterations between 1.0 and now have included it)....your 'Help' button is second from right in the main window and clicking on it directs you to this page in your browser, which is a fairly comprehensive html help file, with illustrative images, written by Smokey01. He's put a lot of time and effort into it and done a great job for us, but if you feel something is missing, he'd probably want you to let him know.

The PuppyPlayground you see there is just my name for a group of contacts....you can name your groups anything you wish.

I'm using this particular release in Slacko5 on an Intel Mac and it's behaving well, except for a couple of very short (ie. two or three seconds) dropouts last night.

In spite of the bugs we've had, which jamesbond is working hard on squashing, (we won't let him out of the dungeon until he's finished!), i'm loving it!

:)

Help button, that's fantastic! I had better catch-up, the Psip that I last looked at didn't have that button, but that is obviously ancient history.

Psip has always had help as far as I can remember.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 735#212735

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 517#216517

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 272#257272

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 346#560346

Some links were broken in the older 0.12 version until I upgraded it to 0.26.

The newer 1.* series has new help included.

The help is quite relevant but I still need to make some minor adjustments.

What version were you looking at Barry?

It may have been 0.26. I must have been blind.

Barry,

You should give this one a run. It's not so good on old hardware but it was compiled on Wary-512.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=47522

Works well here.

A few days ago I was searching for more 'gen on some Psip related issue and by chance I stumbled across a couple of really, really good plain-language screeds which I found very helpful. I bookmarked these intending to suggest that they might be worth considering as a possible addition to smokey01's excellent Help page as 'further reading' links .... then I pulled the wrong plug and my session was lorst & gorn f'rever ..... and of course I can't remember the search terms I was using.

I've now spent some hours trying to rediscover these (still working on it, 'may be gone for some time') and my conclusion is that there is a pile of of incomprehensible/outdated/pretty useless stuff out there, with just a few really helpful gems lurking underneath if only you know where to find them.

I suspect that I am not alone in struggling to get my head around the wider aspects of VoIP technology - may I suggest to fellow Puppy Phone enthusiasts that if you have the good fortune to hit paydirt on really good information resources, post the links on here (quick, before you lose them like I did).

Dogle is still having probs with his voice breaking up - but dogle is dogged
- we will get there. 8)

Next conference call on Sunday October 23 2011 at 1300h GMT daylight saving time

The latest compiles are here:

Click on the red phone icon
http://www.smokey01.com/menu/

Grant suggests you get rid of any previous
/root/.psip.conf
(to see that 'invisible file) go to root in rox and click on the eye
- if you work from the command line then . . . eh . . . do some geeky stuff . . .

then open and close Psip Puppy Phone program to create the config file
and then setup

It seems awfully quiet in here.

Does that mean all is working well now?

Not for me it isn't. :(

1. Been setting up Wary-5.2...
Going quite well so far.
Except when I got to trying out the included Puppy Phone [version 1.2].
When attempting to configure it, the program freezes on me.
I'd hoped to get the latest version included and working in this latest Wary [5.2].
What's the latest version of the Puppy Phone?
How should I uninstall this non-functioning version and install another?

I put the PET that had been compiled for Wary and posted earlier in this thread, into Wary 5.2. I didn't test it myself though, which I should have done.

Barry I have done the same.

Recompiled it in a virgin frugal of wary-5.2 and put the dotpet here:
http://www.smokey01.com/software/psip/P ... Wary52.pet

It seems to work better on later kernels and more modern equipment <10yrs.

I did have trouble installing devx. It kept complaining "there are too many menu item for pupdial to handle"

I installed and used load_sfs to get the devx to work, then it compiled fine.

The sound did droped out occasionally and the volume and mic sliders in the call window were set at zero and wouldn't move. Obviously a problem with sound.

We are not having the same problem with Lucid, Slacko, Fatdog or Dpup Exprimo.

We also had problems in Racy with the sliders. I'm not sure what you have done differently in racy and wary but something must be different to the others.

Cheers.

Lobster when you have time??? can you not write a short easy to grasp
explanation how you use that Puppy phone?
Hi Guys,
I have not used PSIP for 3 years
Suppose I want to make such a phone call to you then.

I go to PPM and look up Puppy Phone and click on it and the pet
get installed and then I click on the menu for puppy phone
and then it says. You have to know the puppy phone number to Lobster
or I have no idea how to make that phone call to him!

I guess your Profile have your Puppy phone number?

ah yes here it is
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyPhone

oops maybe this one instead
http://www.smokey01.com/help/psip/psip-help.html

if I get the text. One simply join something named Iptel
Iptel Free Sip Account recommended
and then decide username there and call the email address?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Here is an essay by Grant (he was awarded 9½/10)
http://www.smokey01.com/help/psip/psip- ... ocId537934

Let us know when the music and other tests work . . .
and you can leave a voice message . . .
Let us know what is difficult to comprehend?

Here is my essay for which I only got 3½/10

Lobster thanks.

smokey01 is my Hero. Wow that was a good presentation.

The only thing just now that I feel unsure of is this iptel thing.

I mean why would them go on providing this service for free?

Who are they?

I regret upgrading Wary/Racy to GTK 2.24.5, as it does some things quite differently. That may be the cause of the problem.

Probably though in the long run it is good that I upgraded, once any issues are sorted out. Then of course the GTK 2.24.x series will remain as-is forever, the last of 2.x.

And not sure about my headsets either. And not sure which
Puppy that already have it installed?

And this iptel who are them really? Why give somethign for free
if it don't pay back? Such servers must cost a fortune?
