Around the time that Precise was being developed, the Kent Robotti Legacy GRUB became incompatible and quit working. It was retired in favour of a new tool called Legacy GRUB Config 2013.

It may be that when Lucid was upgraded, the Robotti GRUB broke again, but was never noticed.

The Lucid maintainers will need to look at this.

Hi, folks. Thanks for this recent discussion.

Although I have rerwin's Lucid Puppy 5.2.8.6 sulu-002 (with GRUB4DOS) on this approx year 2011 computer, I just installed Legacy GRUB Config 2013.
Starting it seems fine, though I didn't proceed with it; the existing GRUB4DOS is working OK.

Again, thanks to you all.

Orinoco_cs pcmcia (non-cardbus) not detected and won't load

#2838 Post by sindi »

My internal orinoco_cs pcmcia card (Toshiba Satellite 3000-S353 and others in the 3000 series) is detected and works in Pulp (4.1.2-based), 4.1.3, and Wary 5.5. In Lupu 5.2.8.6 it is not detected.

Same problem with an external DELL orinoco-based pcmcia card.

I uncommented
/etc/init.d/rc.pcmcia line pcmcia-socket-startup so that non-cardbus cards will be recognized, and a non-cardbus Linksys ethernet card was recognized.

I tried to load it manually:Loading orinoco_cs failed....

FATAL: Error inserting orinoco-cs.... Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg). Maybe try a different driver.

dmesg gives me a long list of
Unknown symbol orinoco_down, _if-add, _up, etc (all with orinoco or hermes in them)
alternating w ith
disagrees about version of symbol orinoco_down......

Was the lupu kernel compiled without support for orinoco? It is one of only two non-cardbus wireless internet chips that I know of. It was also used internally in some older DELLs (I have two, circa 2001 just before mini-PCI cards got popular).

Is there a fix or should I use wary or Puppy 4 instead?
Or an external (cardbus) wireless ethernet card?

There are some differences between that LuPu and the Playdayz-managed LuPu 5.2.8-005. Richard or others at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90461 may have some tips.
I think I needed a driver or something for use with this Super Lupu 2 (or some such variant) , and found it in a Precise iso

lupu 5.2.8.6 and 5.2.8-05.1 no detect orinoco_cs pcmcia

#2841 Post by sindi »

Lupu 2.5.5 works fine, both
later versions do not detect
my orinoco pcmcia card. Was the kernel
changed between 2.5.5 and 2.5.8?

Lupu 5.2.5 lite links broken

#2842 Post by sindi »

I of course meant not 2.5.5 but 5.2.5 lupu lite 105MB iso.
The links to versions 1 and 4 are both broken. There is a 5.2.6 lite as well.

sheldonisaac,
Could you be more specific. I would like to try to resolve the orinoco problem(s) for the next release, which I am considering bumping to "5.2.8.7", since there are many updates since 5 months ago.

I see that lupu and lupusuper2 have both the orinoco drivers and firmware files. Precise 5.6.1 and 5.7.1 have the drivers but not the firmware file. Maybe you needed to add something else for the lupus that handles the missing labels. If we need to recompile the drivers, I could use a recommendation for a link to the appropriate source code.

And a pdiag file (from sindi) from a failing lupu/lupusuper 5.2.8.6 test would be helpful, too.

sheldonisaac,

I was just giving an example for Sindi that a newer OS does not necessarily work with the programs that an older one does.
Which of course she knows.
I think the one that was in my mind was the "error while loading shared libraries: libetpan.so.16: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
That message came when I tried to run claws-mail 3.80 under lupusuper2
Not sure whether I found the missing libetpan.so.16 in Precise, or whether I got it from a .pet.

Sylpheed works on this (older) computer (kernel? 2.6.33.2, LuPu 528), but claws doesn't. So I use claws only on the newer computer with lupusuper2

orinoco_cs pcmcia in post 5.2.5 lupus.

#2845 Post by sindi »

I ran pdiag and it put a bunch of irrelevant looking (mostly blank
or default) files in /tmp/pdiag*. dmesg looks more helpful.
Whether or not I try to manually insert orinoco_cs, there is that
long series of
orinoco_cs: disagrees about version of symbol orinoco_init
orinoco_cs: Unknown symbol orinoco_init
Ditto for orinoco_if_del, hermes_struct_init, orinoco_down,
orinoco_if_add, orinoco_up. alloc_orinocodev

After a few lines about a Conexant modem, the above repeats
(END)

Is this module a mismatch for the kernel or was the kernel not
compiled with support for orinoco? As I said, non-cardbus
pcmcia does work (and you could uncomment the line that
prevents it from working by default).

Wary 5.5 detects and installs orinoco_cs, as do Puppy
4.1.2 (pulp) and 4.3.1. Since sound died on this laptop
anyway, I don't really need gtk-youtubeviewer, which is
my main reason for upgrading to 5. (Also sometimes it helps
to have Firefox greater than 17). Lupu is a lot simpler
to set up since I don't need to upgrade libc or add
libraries for the browsers.

I could confirm the orinoco problem on a 1GHz DELL Inspiron 8100.

I could not get Wary (did not try Lupu) to set cpu speed
to maximum as default on a DELL with a broken wire that
runs at 600MHz because two wires do not connect (motherboard
and power supply) and DELL decided this means I don't
have an OEM power supply and therefore cannot run at
full speed. The screen finished falling off but if you
like I can stick it together long enough to test lupu.

I could not get Wary (did not try Lupu) to use ndiswrapper
with bcm43xx on a DELL Inspiron 2200 where Pulp and 4.3.1
behave as expected. The wifi card is buried under a metal
plate under the keyboard but I can test if important.

Lupu 5.2.8.6 works just fine (frugal) at 500MHz with 384MB.
I can play Youtube videos at 240p (or with a lot of frame
dropping at 360p). I can even play them with movgrab
and mplayer at 240p on a 233MHz with 228MB (pulp).

No such luck in Windows. SMPlayer won't play on the 900MHz
with the pcmcia wifi problem. No PIII support?

Pulp has an ssl-enabled DILLO that I think works in lupu.
Also elinks text browser. Could you add both of these?
(Or lynx, or links2).

Text browsers are about 100 times as fast on a slow connection,
such as one borrowed (with permission) from a neighbor with
a weak router. And they eliminate 95% of the ads (no images).

I added fbida to view images with framebuffer console, also
usable with mplayer. (I had to add fbcon and other modules
to pulp and framebuffer still does not work on all computers).

My Zyxel WIFI (RT8192) works with the driver "rtw_usb_drv"

#2849 Post by Pelo »

"2/ My Zyxel WIFI (RT8192) works with the default driver "rtw_usb_drv" that comes in LUPU528-6. But it does not re-connect after power off using Dougals connection tool. It does work fine though when using Frisbee. "
I confirm, my CSL dongle works with Lucid 528 too, thanks to driver RT8192CU.

Alsa Sound wizard

#2850 Post by rswain »

Hi,

I have 2x5.2.8.5 full hd installations that I updated to 5.2.8.7.
On both /dev/snd is not populated so alsamixer and aplay do not work giving segment errors for aplay and empty window for alsamixer.

I have checked the module is loaded OK on both machines and /proc entries are ok. The configuration appears to be successful but the udev section where the /dev/snd entries are created appears not to work.

I suspect a change to rules.d or a library change.

Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks

that I updated to 5.2.8.7.
How did you do the update?
What specific version of 5.2.8.7?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

No Sound

#2852 Post by rswain »

Booted off the 5.2.8.7 iso CD downloaded from http://www.mediafire.com/download/ndza5 ... 150702.iso Ran the install process and selected Upgrade. Elected not to do the grub stuff.

Noticed that I had sound when booted from CD OK but not after upgrade on hard drive full installation

Sorry should I be in the lucid revitalised forum (http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90461)

Thanks for your help

Have spent time analysing and found new rc.sysinit deletes /dev/snd as part of initialising. However they are not recreated. Copying devices from another machine restores sound after alsamixer is run to unmute etc.
Comment out the rm /dev/snd works around the problem

hope this helps someone

Restore Lucid Repository

#2855 Post by rerwin »

The traditional repositories for Lucid Pup have been moved (by ubuntu) to "old-releases", so are no longer usable by Lucid Pups prior to "5.2.8.7". To regain a usable repository, install the attached package, which removes the old repos and adds old-releases.

The package simply replaces the ubuntu-compatible-repo file, /root/.packages/DISTRO_COMPAT_REPOS, with the one from 5.2.8.7.

Thanks to CGP for alerting me to the problem.
