Confirming pngoverlay bugs. It works great with USB devices, but not as you can see with optical drive, and not with my dedicated SD card reader. USB card readers are no problem. Again, I suspect this is a woof implementation which may be incomplete. There were reports of similar issues with partitions, but as I only have a single partition on this machine, I cant test.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Dave .. you can retrofit

Go to PPM and type "xcb*" in the search box, then choose xcb-utils, restart X when complete, it's only a small lib

Possible good news from testing Chromium 15. On Lucid, every Chromium and Iron above 10 has a problem--sometimes when starting it will get stuck Loading--it is called "the pinwheel of death" because of the loading symbol of the pinwheel. The good news is that Chromium 15 seems not to have the problem in Slacko beta 1. Chromium is the open source testing branch for Google Chrome--so it doesn't have official releases--this is the daily build from AUG 16.

Iron 13 should be available soon--it is already released for Windows.

Hey, I just thought I would try, but Google Chrome 13 seems to be running nicely in Slacko beta 1. I'll make a pet for anyone interested. Oops, It is running nicely in Lucid 5.2.8, but I'll still make a pet ;-)

Display Driver for Fusion APUs by AMD

#82 Post by raffy »

I've posted in the Fatdog64 thread and will post here, too, the URL of the display driver for Radeon HD chips in the new Fusion APUs by AMD.

The new laptops are full-size but are priced the same or lower than netbooks, so they are definitely friends of Puppy. :)

Have tested Slacko, but only ISpup is able to keep X going in the E-350. If you need any info about the inner works of E-350, just tell me how to get it.

Adding mtpaintsnapshot to tray requires edit of jwmrc-tray

#83 Post by mikeslr »

Hi All,
DaveS & James C already mentioned the Ati-Radeon & missing icon situation.
So far, I've experienced no other problems with Beta1, except adding mtpaintsnapshot to jwm's tray via jwm configure. The tool tip and executable are picked up, but the icon designation still is 'icon=""'. Workaround is to edit .jwmrc-tray by hand.

Same problem with all recent pups.

Hi raffy

I see ISpup is basically built on top of quirky-120 k2.6.33.2.. didn't lupu work? Can you tell me what xorg driver is used in ISpup?

We do have the ATI driver 11.7 but I see they released 11.8 on the same day Slacko Beta 1 was released. I'll update soon, it's a huge driver though at 50M  (compressed, expands to 137 M, so need a big pupsave)

Cheers

I can't reproduce your jwm issue with mtpaint, it works for me, so best I can suggest is to PM plinej. He has been very active lately and he was the original coder of most of the jwm utilities. I'd approach it differently but I don't want to. I'm [very] far from the best coder around here anyway!

Slacko beta 1 boot from USB-Flash (without hard disk).
(The other (new) puppy (puppies) can't. e.g midnightsun 003, snowpup 020, icepup 15, wary 513, dpup exprimo x 3).
Thank you, 01micko
(I can't boot up my computer with other puppies because there isn't a hard disk.)
Slacko beta 1 load sfs files faster than other puppies. I can connect to internet via my USB-3G modem (Huawei HPSA - E173Eu-1)
Load and run smoothly these apps : TeXlive 2010, Java u_26, Libre-Office, Lazarus - FreePascal -, KDE-K3b and Amarok. These apps were loaded with sfs_load.
Thank you again

Fusion APU E-350

#88 Post by raffy »

Micko, the new pups are able to boot successfully, but they hang soon after, that's why I suspected it's the APM that's causing it. But no joy with "apm=off".

Anyway, here are the Xorg files from ISpup (they have identical time, so I included all three).

raffy, It may be kernel modesetting upsetting your machine.

Does it have a CD drive? If so and you boot from CD try

Code: Select all

puppy nomodeset pfix=ram
then choose vesa from the xorgwizard.
If you are booting USB then add

Code: Select all

nomodeset pfix=ram
to the kernel line in syslinux.cfg or extlinux.conf, then proceed with vesa in xorgwizard. I think the ATI driver in the PPM will work for you, especially if an old kernel works.

I notice Xorg is using vesa driver in the ISpup files you posted.

Slacko doesn't have the i810 driver, which is best for some Pent.
M laptops with 855gm graphics.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Code:
set 'Master Front' 75% unmute
set 'Master Front' -12dB
" need to be added to other alsa scripts, I think that would have solved your issue...
OK booted up and the sound is muted.
This is after I attempted to get the mic working.
So changing the sound parameters may be the cause
but some ability to revert, use previous settings
or a saved or default setting might be an option.
Maybe the above code in beta 2 will help.
For now will try and get the sound back to green.

It may be that once sound settings are changed a
x restart is insufficient and a full reboot is required?
Anyway will try again to get sound back . . .
That would be strange.

Good news.
Installed very easily to USB. :)
Booted on Eeepc original model :)
Already as reported on the Slacko Alphas

The Xorg high driver was tagged
by the driver wizard in slickpet but not yet available . . .

The shutdown and save file creation was very slow on the Eeepc
Have only seen such slowness (10 minutes maybe)
on NTFS formatted hard disks

Lobster

Try this;

Code: Select all

Multiple-Sound-Card-Wizard
Choose the first entry, click ok, do not reboot

then;in that terminal 2 variables will be echoed.

Code: Select all

Card=0
Device=0
then you see an error

Code: Select all

cp: cannot stat `/etc/asound.conf': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `/etc/asound.conf': No such file or directory
Ignore the error; I'll fix it later;

then; run this

Code: Select all

# /etc/init.d/10alsa restart
that will restart alsa with correct sound parameters.. if you got 2barks at boot at pfix=ram then you will get 2 barks when you run this:

Code: Select all

# aplay /usr/share/audio/2barks.wav
__________

I have to intercept running of the alsawizard. It should only be necessary with old ISA cards which were very good in their day but are rare in modern HW. (Actually they are much better than the crappy sound chips of today, for good audio these days you need to fork out the moolah).

Basically, if retrovol is running, whether you can hear it or not, alsa is running and has set up sound.

The best avenue then to pursue is either:
right clicking the retrovol icon in the tray and selecting "Full Window", check the boxes that you think are needed, then exit, hopefully things are ok (pizasgood's little proggy is effective though a little confusing)
or
Run "alsamixer" in the terminal and adjust settings with arrow keys. Be aware that some things will be switched off, There is an input source setting on many built in (to motherboard) modern sound cards that toggles whether you want surround sound or front mic or rear mic, use the arrow keys to adjust this. You may need to hit the TAB key (no, a diet cola will not be forthcoming) to see this setting.

We then need a pawdcast!

We then need a pawdcast!
That is a good plan. :)

I got the green sound icon back by turning off all the mic options.

Now gonna try again making the mic available, keeping an eye on your suggestions if I run into trouble . . .

May download precord or similar if available
- getting mhwavedit may be too cumbersome . . .

Thanks for your detailed instructions 8)

Thanks Mick, :)

With Mhwavedit I got a message

Code: Select all

Error opening ALSA device 'default'
for recording invalid argument
when trying to set the recording quality . . .
That was on my Eeepc . . .

I was unable to use the PPM (even from the command line)
to download precord (again on the Eeepc)
I note Barry has been working on the PPM so
may be improved with the Beta 2

Gonna try on my main machine to get the latest precord . . .
