Working on it, apologize for jumping the gun, got excited when I read the post, but need to test it and verify.

Next Puppy 29092011 is being built right now, with two important changes:
- A dhcpcd bug fix - for some reason the build script got messed up so some files were missing
- Transmission 1.93 - the 2.x series is much bigger and heavier, while 1.9x is lighter and small

Thanks, darkcity!

Uploading Next Puppy 5.0.2 29092011, with all the new features since alpha 3. It's simply amazing how much better it is :)

EDIT: still uploading, it's extremely slow ...

I decided to make small Abiword and Gnumeric packages, too - I want to see how small I can get them.

Abiword's core dependencies (wv and libgsf) are ready and extremely tiny - now I need to get Abiword to compile. Gnumeric (and goffice, its dependency) will follow, hopefully :)

I'm doing this in protest against ICPUG's comment in Barry's blog, which claims Next Puppy isn't aimed at content creation because it lacks these. This is incorrect, because things like Google Docs exist (and there are more reasons why they're out, like their limited usefulness in a world dominated by LibreOffice).

Good news: I got Abiword and all its dependencies stuffed in ~2.5 MB and now I'm trying to get Gnumeric to build. It has a build-time dependency on scrollkeeper (which is missing) so I'm doing a first testing build of an improved build script that patches the sources to remove this annoying dependency.

It's kinda funny - it builds just fine but the installation itself fails because of this.

I want to do a full build of an E16-powered dpup with Abiword and Gnumeric - I aim at <= 105 MB. This can compete with the size of the early 4.x series easily :D

Yay! Fixed it!

Now we have fresh builds of the latest librsvg, wv, libgsf, goffice, Abiword and Gnumeric. Very good!

Now I'm building a new dpup with Woof and I'm going to remaster it with all these. While Woof is running, I'm learning how to build LibreOffice. I want to see if it's possible to make a small LibreOffice package with just Writer, Impress and Calc that is built on dpup, natively. :)

Nice

So far this is a winner & can only get better if you ask me :)

I had kernel panic the 1st try with connecting online using sns. got booted back up & used my frisbee sfs to get online. It was quicker getting an IP this time but still not instant so hopin the next version with the dhcp fix takes care of that.

New screener of desktop.

Here is a new theme i made. I like how on my widescreen monitor it seems to change.

Just unpack to ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Themes & enjoy.

More new stuff - the next build has Abiword, Gnumeric and Osmo. I also decided that D-Bus should be enabled by default, since it's a 'lil bit confusing for novice users.

I learnt how to build SDL - now we have a ~200 KB package. Nothing depends on it at the moment, but it's good to have, because 99% of Linux games want it and MPlayer could use it to provide another video output source.

Now I'm trying to get Freeciv to build, to see if this SDL package is good.

EDIT: ummmm.... weird. Freeciv won't build, but I was able to build, install and play Chocolate Doom :D

Iguleder. Enabling dbus is good idea. If you have fresh frugal install or pfix=ram booting, you cant use Bootmanager. It is difficult for even advanced user to enable dbus without gui app to do it.

There is a GUI for this, but you're right - you can't start it easily in a live session.

By the way - Chocolate Doom is really nice!

EDIT: I just found out that MPlayer can be used as a webcam viewer, so I added a menu entry. This harms the one-application-per-task philosophy, but MPlayer is intended to be a multi-purpose multimedia player and all webcam viewers (except Luvcview, which is extremely ugly and unstable) have lots of dependencies, so this is a good choice.

EDIT 2: here are some fresh packages, built for the next release. The forums won't let me upload Abiword (which is 2.3 MB).

Here are some goodies: Openbox, Docker (a system tray) and lal (a clock). Much smaller than E16 and more minimalistic.

I'm doing a nice experiment - I'm trying to build something even more minimalistic. Looks great so far. :)

(by the way, it's the smallest Openbox package I've ever seen)

I can't describe the bug, haven't encountered it. But with the talk here about it I curiously tried it, and the outcome of using F11 is an ongoing nuisance (I'm using Wary).

When I hit F11 to return to normal, the browser is a little larger than desired. The bottom line that normally shows Done and reveals URLs as you mouse over links, is hidden by JWM's window titles on the bottom of the screen, and it is very difficult to resize the browser back to normal. Further, after that, when I open mplayer to play an mp3 it will open to fill the whole screen and I have to hit F11 to reduce it to a small size. So, call these features if you wish, but IMO on my current install it is better to not touch F11.

JWM F11 bug has been fixed in latest version. Barry Kauler has uploaded recent JWM 505 version pet. I test compiled jwm binary and it fixed the F11 bug.
Barrys package is in ibiblio under pet_packages-common repo. Just feed the last phrase to the google or whatever.

1st off let me start by sayin this is problably the dreaded user error issue I usually have lol.

I installed all the pets to check out the new desktop of next puppy & once installed I drop to x to start openbox.

Tried start openbox did not go then tried xwin openbox it seemed like it was going to work loaded up a black screen with mouse cursor but thats all. I think it locked my keyboard out as well cuz it would not let me ctrl+alt+backspace to get back out.

Then tried with e16 pet xwin e16 & got the same results as with openbox.

Any info on what im probably doing wrong would be great :) thanks in advance.

Right-click is your friend. Openbox has no tray/slit/whatever and the wallpaper is not set (feh is your friend, too).

Right-click and see Openbox in all its glory.
