Hi all, I have a problem with wine that I hope you can help with.

Wine installs windows programs fine, but they never show up in the menu, I can find them under drive_C in the /root/.wine folder but many won't run and they worked in ubuntu under same version of wine. Also in ubuntu there were a menu called wine programs where all installed programs would be listed, this is not present in puppy for some strange reason.

OpenGL does not seem to be working in wine, I tried installing the windows version of the ATI driver in wine, but it just hangs and never get any further than to the unzipping of the file. So I unzipped it myself and ran the setup.exe - nothing happened, the icon seem to be clicked but no reaction.

Installing directX 9.5 from Winetricks worked fine and also the 2010 version got installed.
Still the CAD/CNC programs complain that no OpenGL driver is installed.

Puppy's version of HardiNfo repports the ATI card and that its OpenGL compliant and AGP 2.0.

How do I solve these things?

I haven't used Wine in Ubuntu, only in Puppy, but I would guess that wine is more tightly integrated with Ubuntu than it is with Puppy.

Perhaps this will help. You can easily make desktop icons for your Windows programs. Simply open your Drive_C directory in Rox (or XFE or Thunar). Drag the .exe file to the desktop. Now you have a desktop icon.

If you wish, you can assign your desktop icon a specific design with only a little more effort.

Find or make a .png icon for it. The Rox pinboard standard seems to be 48x48 pixels. A 32x32 (WIndows standard) icon will work, but it will be smaller, and may not align well with other icons.

You can make a 48x48 icon from public domain clip art, using Gimp or possibly mtpaint. Some PD clip art websites even have their art available as .png files with transparent backgrounds, which is ideal. All you have to do is resize them.

Or you can extract the WIndows icon from the program itself, and use Gimp or nmtpaint to change its size from 32x32 to 48x48.

Here is a freeware windows program that will extract icons from a .exe file for you. It works under wine.

To install your new icon, right click the existing icon, select File, then select Set Icon. Drag your new .png file onto the dialog.

Sorry that I can't help with the OpenGL problem, because I'm too inexperienced with Puppy and Linux. Maybe someone else can.

This problem now concerns Puppy 4.2.1 since I had to move to this version to get OpenGL to work.

So I will change the name of this thread to be: Puppy 4 wine Problem.

Eventhough OpenGL is now working in Puppy 4.2.1, the problem with wine is still there. So if somenone has some tricks or tips then your more than welcome to post it:)

Now that opengl is working, can you describe with precision what the problem is now?

Well, that is very simple OpenGL might be working in Puppy but its not working in Wine. Programs like Google's Sketchup 5 complain that there is no openGL drivers loaded. The same does Mach 3, which is a CNC control program.

OpenGL viewer repports that there is no OpenGL driver loaded.

But 3D works fine and I can test it with directX.

Isn't there in winetricks an option to install opengl in wine?

Hi Beem, there is an option in winetricks, to install DirectX so maybe there is an option for OpenGL but its hard to see, since its not grouped the correct way but a continous row and no horizontal scroll bar(winetricks is not very wellthought) and there is allot of things that makes no sense at all.

It has been a longtime I used winetricks.
BTW which version of Wine do you have?

I remember there is a way to have a selection list, but can't remember exactly how.

Maybe wintetricks -h (or --help)

Its this command:

winetricks list-download

but there is no OpenGL

OK. I don't know enough of special Wine programs, But I always had in mind that things like OpenGL, installed in Linux, were be called from within Wine.

Like the Internet connection, printing and the like.

I already advised you to seek help on the Wine web site.
