Subject description: Works with VLC

Would like to get this webcam to work in Lupu 5.2.

After searching through the forum, I'm sad to say, I have no idea how to start. Found some very old posts about camwizard (no place to download and in pup format) and very few recent posts, at least not clear ones on google 'puppy linux forum webcam' so any advice would be very appreciated.

Closer!

Can take pictures now with the screenshot feature on one of the forum posts, but when I run ucview I got nothing but black screen and when I try to capture with mplayer I must have the wrong settings 'cause I get just blue and green garbage..

I wonder if the Puppy used doesn't include a driver for that particular model of web-cam?

I recently bought a Logitech-C120, and tried it with Lupu-525 and its web-cam viewer, and it "just worked".
Haven't yet tried it in Skype.

Sylvander: how did it just work? What did you run to show that it worked? luvcview?

If I use ucview as an example, I can't get a picture.

I would load:
Code:

modprobe gspca_spca500

and run ucview and it shows that there is USB Camera (041e:041f), I select a size, but I get a black picture when ucview is running.

I then run:
Code:

rmmod gspca_scpa500

to unload the module. Ucview then does not show any device at all.

I repeated this process with all the gspca_spca5xx's listed in /lib/modules/2.6.30.5/kernel/drivers/media/video/gscpa.

Each time ucview shows a device, but every time I still have a black screen.

? What am I missing? It is a different module that I need to load? Or do I need to be running something beside ucview?

Subject description: DIFFERENT PUPLET?

I am indifferent to which puppy to use to get this thing to work.

Can anyone recomend a different puplet that is good with this type of webcam? Maybe that is what I should try...

1. "Sylvander: how did it just work? What did you run to show that it worked? luvcview?"
(a) If I remember right...
I connected the camera...
Nothing showing...
Ran the native webcam viewer of Lupu-525...
luvcview methinks...
And there I was; displayed in its window.

(b) Tried it again right now in Lupu-526, using Guvcview webcam viewer.
Just plugged in the camera to a USB-2.0 socket, ran Guvcview, and there I was in the window.
Ot's great when it "just works". Very Happy

2. "Can anyone recomend a different puplet that is good with this type of webcam? Maybe that is what I should try"
How about trying one of the Puppies that are intended to be good with audio/video?
e.g. Wary? [I'm no expert]

well, tried wary 5.1.2 and now am in dpup009 and have had about the same success.

Attached is the output from mplayer...just very frustrating.

Hope someone has another idea about what to try to get this running...

Alright, here is some more ideas to work with.

I got a Logitech V-UM27 to work in VLC in Lupu with this info:
Code:

Open VLC, go to 'Open Capture Device' in the 'Media' menu, then type "/dev/video0" under 'Video device name' and click 'play'

VLC is the only way I could get Video4Linux2 to work.

So I can do it all with VLC with this webcam, I can't believe it. I'm going to try the other one/first one I tried here in a minute and post back...

And, sure enough, it worked perfectly with VLC and this Creative Webcam...

Looking for explanations as to why VLC works with V4L2 but Luvcview doesn't? Any ideas?

Well, this is solved using the webcamsnapshot.sh script found on the forum and VLC for video. I still gotta learn how to use VLC to capture the video, but the fact that it shows me and my ugly self sitting here means it works.
