About xpdf-3.0.3. I dont have experience of compiling pdf apps. They seem to demand libs I dont have a glue about. Freetype2 lib headers. For example. What it is. There is only freetype6 which we use. I dont bother to find out. The install file in xpdf was not very helpful. Sorry.

not using freetype2 library
But...there is xpdf-3.0.2 in debian squeeze repo. If there is special need for xpdf...I recommed to test it.

It looks like nvidia kernel module is not loaded, for some reason...or it is not even compiled. Or your graphics is not supported.
You should check xorg.0.log and dmesg and xerrs.log also.
Check in console: find /lib/modules -name nvidia.ko
if it does exist.
And I suppose you need to reboot before you can use it.

MANY THANKS pemasu! I'm downloading now and testing across a range of pupplets through the week - reckon it should work fine on most 32-bit versions(?I'll explore, anyway). Thank you too for the heads up on XPDF in the squeeze repository. I think I have that one installed, but I'm on another computer at present - bit hazy with all the frantic testing I did yesterday, but I think I had absolutely no problem with it.

Hi Pemasu,
Check in console: find /lib/modules -name nvidia.ko
if it does exist.
/lib/modules/3.4.2-dpup/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko is well present (see my posts first attachment)
and
find /lib/modules -name nvidia.ko
does not return any message nor error message ...
got the same using 5X3.4.2.9 ...
maybe my hardware is to old ... compaq evo 510 PIV + Nvidia GeForce2 NV11DDR MX200
what is working:
- the nv_drv.so xorg driver is the one working here

Sorry. I didnt notice you had showed the presence of nvidia.ko.
About find /lib/modules -name nvidia.ko
It should show the nvidia.ko location. I wonder what went wrong.

the against k2.6.39.4 nvidia.ko is 11M sized; and there is a nvidia_drv.s0 (ca. 8M) present; i'll have a look if the needed libs are also present ...in the with getnvidia-built driver...

I then could install the right driver this way:
- on the NVIDIA website download screen, have selected the "Legacy" option to get this old driver;
- downloaded the 96.43.xx NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.20-pkg1.run driver installer;
- just followed the nvidia provided instructions (see on website)
- quit the X desktop and launched when prompted

afterwards follow displayed instructions and do
when finished
it runs like a charm...glxgears (extracted and copied from xorg-high-001.pet) reports about 4500 frames in 5 seconds ...

While I have been very satisfied with Seamonkey -- Firefox is the default browser here so I thought I would give it a try.
I need a good E-mail app and the SimpleMail add-on is not up to the task.
May I just download and extract Thunderbird 14 to the generic defaults or do I need a version that has been complied for 5X15, please?
EDIT:
Would this Racy SFS for Thunderbird be OK with 5X15 - then I could upgrade it to v.14.0 via Mozilla?

Edoc why not load it with the sfs loader. If it doesn't work, simply unload it. There is a good chance it may work.
Personally I would just install Seamonkey.

I was concerned that a wrongly configured Thunderbird might create conflicts.

- here on a Compaq evo 510 + nvidia GeForce2MX200 on 5X15 exprimo + 96.43.20 nvidia driver installed -
- audio controller: onboard Intel Corporation 82801 ICH4 -
Musescore: «how to» if sound is jerky.
problem:
Playing sound renders jerky sounds and dramaticaly slows down the PC display, after the first half a dozen of notes, on the default score coming when starting for the first time the musescore.pet version 0.1 or 0.2, downloaded from the dpup-exprimo-pets.
solution:
To fix this, here i opened the View/Synthetizer popup menu in the menubar, and made following settings:
in both thumbnails «Reverb» and «Chorus», just adjust all the cursors or values to zero; and play again.
explaination:
With default settings (i.e reverb and/or chorus values different from zero), alsa uses much cpu ressources and dramaticaly slows down the global PC performances. This is usefull to keep in mind even with other sound apps like timidity (there are reverb and chorus line command settings), especially if running with minimal sound performance hardware.

You would be supposing I could remember what happened yesterday.
I did several searches on Puppy Linux Thunderbird (inside and outside the Forum) and that post did not show up.
I believe most email apps work in dpup exprimo. I use Thunderbird. I just download the thunderbird tar ball.....extract it to the /mnt/home....drag symlink of .thunderbird folder to the /root and then I drag thunderbird binary to the desktop and give it icon. I do that base installation seldom. Lastly I had to do that when I had that hdd crash.
Thunderbird updates automatically in that /mnt/home location with my adjustments.
I havent created pet for it....because it would be old in couple of weeks.
It may be more trouble than I have time for right now to sort out Firefox and T-bird & Seamonkey gets it done.

edoc - I have also had some troubles with Firefox, and, looked for
other browsers... problem being, Firefox is considered the defacto
linux browser at all, getting the most usage and development...
has the most features, add-ons, whatever.
Iceweasel was, I believe, the official debian "de-commercialized" firefox
derivative for a while, whereas, in the latest stable debian, I have
Seamonkey as default... all three browsers are similar.
If you are simply having problems with the supplied versions of Firefox
in dpup-Exprimo, you can always download a fresh tarball from web,
and, following pemasu-s instructions, put icon on desktop for launching.
I had very little luck with Chrome, chromium, whatever... likewise, after
trying several alternative browsers, returned quickly to Firefox/Seamonkey/
Iceweasel... just for stability sake, I recommend one of those.
As for email - Thunderbird always worked for me out of the package...
dunno what went wong for you... Thunderbird hadnt been developed for
3 years or so, last time I looked.
Whats wrong with Gmail ? It is free, and, with gmail, you get free
googlephone... maybe even video chat... its big, and is upgraded/
maintained a lot.
Really, as better browsers or email go - if there were such things,
everybody would be already be using them, no ? : -)
