OK, got everything ported to the new bluehost.com Web host, replaced the troublesome Netgear router with an ASUS, the upgraded the router OS to Tomato.
I now have the HP LaserJet P1006 connected to the ASUS RT-N16 router and the relevant router services toggled-on:
Core USB Support
USB 2.0 Support
USB 1,1 OHCI Support
USB Printer Support
Bidirectional copying
Tomato recognizes the printer at Host: lp0 Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet P1006
I downloaded the latest Exprimo 5,X.3.x.x.x.x ISO and burned it to a CD & am looking at it on the other laptop as I type.
I loaded your foo2xxx_rcrsn-2011.03.16.pet
I then went looking for the printer in CUPS and it is not found.
Pulling and reconnecting the USB cable has no impact.
Power-cycling the printer has no impact.
NOTE: The other laptop to which the printer was formerly connected is powered-off so as to avoid potential conflict.

Just to be clear - the printer is plugged into a USB printer port on the ROUTER, as opposed to a computer? Was it that way previously when it was working? It sounds like you had it connected directly to a laptop.
This now makes it a networked printer, so there are two issues.
1. Puppy will often auto-detect this type of network printer setup. But if yours won't, you will need to manually install it using the device type "AppSocket/JetDirect". This will require the IP address of the router.
2. Your printer requires a firmware download in order for the driver to work. If the printer is plugged directly into a computer via USB, this happens automatically when the printer is detected at bootup. But as a networked printer, there is no way for this download to happen.
So I'm curious how you had this printer working before.

The P1006 printer was previously connected to a laptop and then we got a Deskjet 1000 and plugged that in as well - at which time things became unstable - complaining about two printers - so we disconnected the 1000.
Shortly after that CUPS stopped working.
I will look at the ASUS Forum threads again as I think I saw that one may load modules on it when I was researching my decision to get this specific router.

OK. So the laptop-dual printer issue is ancient history and we are now dealing with your P1006 connected to a router.
1. Determine the IP address of the router - aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd.
2. Run the command: mpscan -p 9100 aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd.
What do you get back?
Have you installed the printer in CUPS using the AppSocket/JetDirect method as stated above?

In E-mail when I open the "View settings for this account" on my Netbook (Samsung NB30) it overruns the display and I cannot grab an edge to reduce it nor find any setting that forces it to be smaller when it opens.
Any suggestions, please?

I do not appear to have "mpscan".
Where might I acquire that, please?

Will this version mpscan-0.1.0.tar.gz of mpscan be OK in Exprimo 5X14?
I found a link here but it's a 2008 thread:

A PET known to work in Exprimo 5X14 would be preferred, since I am infamous for breaking what works for everyone else ...
I'm sticking with 5X14 until I can sort out the NIC stability problem in 5X3428

mpscan source is old. From year 2003.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpscan/files/
There is no debian squeeze package for it.
I compiled it from source in dpup.

Under the gateway you should see your router internal ip address.

Assuming that 192.168.1.1 is the router's address, try

Do you have a Windows machine on your network? If you let it find the printer, you may get some hints about how to do it in Linux.
According to the instructions here, this router uses standard protocols. So Port 9100 should be working.

I uninstalled the old mpscan via Puppy Package Manager.
I installed the new mpscan (thanks!).
Then did as you instructed:
