You have gone far beyond what I had hoped for. Many thanks. When X restarted I saw the fleeting message switching to performance mode. But that isn't the full speed turbo though, is it? So I've edited your script and will see whether turbo.sh gives the right message.pemasu wrote:Shep. My builds lack network_tray. In the attached pet is the network_tray. The pet also modifies 0acpid sript so that performance is enabled. Also ppower is not launched anymore and so it will not appear to the tray. This pet also removes firewallstaterun script. All these scripts which are modified or removed are in /root/Startup.
Yes you can remove firewallstaterun when it is set as on. There is also in menu > network traditional firewall entry. It launches the firewall script also.
So...this pet is Shep edition. Restart X after installing the pet and you have all you wished.

dvdisaster
dvdisaster works well!! In some respects it works better in Puppy
than in Ubuntu linux.
I explain how to use 'dvdisaster' to get TV recordings off a
DVD that has gone bad. Maybe the DVD has scratches
or in my case it's a defective DVD recorder.

Vovchik recommend a markup program. When I used it

My hunch is that the scripts are before gtkdialog >=0.8 time and there is problem with close button due to that.
Try it with gtkdialog3 binary instead of my symlink gtkdialog3 which points to gtkdialog (which is gtkdialog of last revision ie latest version of new gtkdialog)
Pick that gtkdialog3 for example from some older Lucid Puppy version or from Barrys Puppy or from here:

if [ $? -eq = 0 ] ; then
Would that be better. After adding "=" there came no more error that mtpaint need to be closed before installing the manual.
I created DOTdesktop file as example for your Handbook.

I, too, was being left with a shutdown computer with the tray wide open. So have tried Billtoo's fix and will see how it goes.Billtoo wrote:I don't think it would be a great idea to force it shut.shinobar wrote:Can't you manually close the tray after the power is off?Billtoo wrote:When I shut down the dvd tray opened to allow removing the dvd but it

EDIT:I don't know whether or not this was a great idea either but I
commented this part of the rc.shutdown and it has fixed the problem.
# eject CDs # 31dec10 moved up before umount -ar
# merge
#for ONEDRV in $MOUNTEDCDS; do
# echo "$DETECTEDCDS " | grep -q "$ONDRV[ ]" || \
# DETECTEDCDS="$DETECTEDCDS $ONEDRV"
#done
# eject all only if poweroff
#if [ "$DETECTEDCDS" -a "$WMEXITMODE" = "poweroff" ]; then
# echo -n "Ejecting CD's..." >/dev/console
# STATUS="done"
# for ONEDRV in $DETECTEDCDS; do
# eject /dev/$ONEDRV || STATUS="faled"
# done
# echo "$STATUS." >/dev/console
#fi
#busybox umount -ar > /dev/null 2>&1
#the end#
EDIT: it works perfectly, now shuts down without ejecting the CD.

Sorry but i do not understand what is the inconvenience.Shep wrote:I, too, was being left with a shutdown computer with the tray wide open.
What kind of disk do you keep in the PC?
The tray can close by hand even after powered off.
But hardly eject the disk by hand if it is left in.

error in pinstall script
Oopps I made an error but I don't think it's related to your suggestion.pemasu wrote:if [ $? -eq = 0 ] ; then

I spent last night trying to track it down when I realized
that I had changed the name of the package slightly. Just one character
difference ( underscore was changed to a hyphen in the package name)
and that was enough to make the pinstall script not work as intended.
I was experimenting with the name of the package because
for some strange reason I can't attach the package to a post.
I thought that there was some strange character in the pet name
that was causing the forum to reject the package.
The forum warns me that the package has zero length. Very strange.
That's why I have to distribute it with datafilehost.com.
But anyway I've fixed the name now, and it's available at
my mtpaint 3.40 thread.

The live CD. It lives there.shinobar wrote:Sorry but i do not understand what is the inconvenience.Shep wrote:I, too, was being left with a shutdown computer with the tray wide open.

No it can't.The tray can close by hand even after powered off.
No sure what you mean,But hardly eject the disk by hand if it is left in.
Laptop cd/dvd drives can be closed by hand after shutting down the laptop. There is no mechanical stuff to prevent it. Just push and it closes nicely. But...I remember from my desktop experiences that there is cd/dvd drives which had some kind wheels of gears and there was quite a resistance when I pushed the drive closed when comp was shut down. I didnt manage to brake any drives but I feared that something could happen.
I explain how to use pdvdrsab and
to burn a TV show to DVD in the following post
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 660#599660
I also explain how to keep the caption information when doing a burn.
Hint: The secret is to avoid using ffmeg.

Removing cd/dvd media at shutdown
I guess only the difference is the power or your hand who drives the wheels of gears.pemasu wrote:there is cd/dvd drives which had some kind wheels of gears and there was quite a resistance when I pushed the drive closed when comp was shut down.
I supposed the live CD is for temporal use. But now i understand some users use it for usual boot up measure.Shep wrote:The live CD. It lives there.
My thought why i introduced this function at shutdown:
One is using the live CD on a public PC, internet cafe or at office.
Second, using an audio/video/data CD/DVD.
Both case, if you power off the PC forgetting the media in the drive, you need to power on the PC again to remove the media. It is hard to open the tray without power.
Many live CD distributions ask the user to remove the media. It can be a solution. But i do not think it is the best.
We need to consider more what is reasonable solution.

Re: Removing cd/dvd media at shutdown
I can see you have given it a deal of thought. Most users who run puppy linux at an internet cafe or office probably now use a USB thumb drive carrying both OS and data files. I reckon only home users would be routinely using the CD.shinobar wrote:My thought why i introduced this function at shutdown:

Can the OS detect a non-puppy disc in the drive? If so, maybe prompt then for it to be removed. ("There is a data disc in the drive, quickly press any key to eject the disc now.")
Re: Removing cd/dvd media at shutdown
I was looking for a way to detect whether a CD or DVD is present in the drive (mounted or unounted) for VLC-GTK, but I was too dumb to find a way... I would also be very interested in learning how to detect CDs/DVDs (and their contents) using bash... Sorry, hijack over.Shep wrote:Can the OS detect a non-puppy disc in the drive? Paperclips
Most (maybe all?) CD/DVD drives have a small hole you can use to mechanically eject them when the power is off. (I think the ones fitted to cars may not have this hole.)
You can poke a bent paperclip into the hole to manually eject the CD/DVD.
See? Clippy is useful for something after all.
