SoundNICK. It is bad if aliases does not work in 5.X.9. I will test it later.

I have atm 5.X.10.2 with pfix=ram situation and I cant reboot. I have kernel compile at hand. I would lose the stuff. And I wont make savefile since now stuff is in ram and I have noticed it it best that way with kernel compile....okay....kernels should be compiled with full install but this is next best way.
I am afraid I can continue discussion only after I come back from Lapland. This evening goes with packing.

Oh gee... time for the ski competition this year I suppose... well
good luck for your team, and yes I agree, it is no good without aliases.

Dpup Exprimo 5.X.9

#1428 Post by theblackpig »

Hi Folks,
I'm new to Puppy and have been trying different "flavors" of Puppy (I haven 7 live CD's) BUT I think this by far the best!
I've had no trouble down loading it or running it and have just installed it to my 500GB
external hard drive - brilliant :D

Pemasu... at least when you return from ski trip or whatever, there is
also this good news now ! It seems I must have accidentally deleted
some essential file... I did remove one application, so it wouldnt interfere
with a PET of same I made... it must have been then the essential system
file got removed too : - ) I say this now with confidence, because, another
savefile, also made with eXprimo 5-8 works fine with all the things I complained
about... aliases work, and a text alias file, and scripts... before, all this was
if-y... now it is normal.

I would feel silly, but no time... too happy to have aliases working :)

HAPPYsoundNICK

EDIT: OK_ now I found the problem_ weird, using dpup-squeeze is first Ive seen this...
anyway, when I use ROXTERM, aliases do not work, no matter what I do... when I use
sakura, everything is OK as it should be. Sakura IS in PPM... roxterm no... so maybe this is better : - )

How do I save this to a USB stick?

#1431 Post by edoc »

How do I save this to a USB stick so I may share it at church?

http://www.godtube.com/watch/?v=KYPK7WNX

I cannot figure out which included multimedia app to use, if any of them will work.

Or do I need an add-on for Seamonkey?

err... assuming you have dpup exprimo installed, you could use
mplayer to VIEW it at least - IF you have the actual video on your computer.
Note, this appears to be a commercial video... clicking the link you posted,
I see it is sold for $1.29 at iTunes. You may need to purchase it before
you can download it ?

I had not noticed that one was for-sale, I will try that route - but apparently the other is not?

I saw this but found nothing in my /tmp folder:
I simply copy the file from my /tmp folder. Yay Linux!
We have not yet succeeded in getting any of these to work with GodTube and YouTube in Seamonkey 2.5:

http://stream-recorder.com/forum/www-go ... t3358.html

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/12822/do ... -easy-way/

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10137

But we will keep trying ...

Just checked, that one is Free in iTunes:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-he ... d464456857
3 The Heart of Christmas Matthew West 4:12 Free View In iTunes
But that still does not answer the question of how I download it to use in Puppy rather than an Apple Corp. proprietary device in a proprietary format. WDYT?

Right... some of the songs are listed as free to listen to... thats the catch.
Free for listening is not free for downloading to USB and playing back
for a church group... that is rebroadcast - something the fine print
always prohibits.

If you really want to use music by this particular musician, email them,
or their record label, and ask for permission to use it in a small
church group.

Otherwise, since your problems are with using iTunes, and not really
with puppylinux, I'll suggest an iTune oriented forum would have much
better answers for you. Good luck.

So, I am to conclude that there is no app that will work in Puppy that can download a purchased iTunes marketed/served song (once I buy it I own it for fair/personal use) for use on any device other than a proprietary iTunes device?

I don't expect to find such an app on an Apple-controlled iTunes forum.

I am using Firefox in Wary. As someone pointed out, Firefox used to download videos to /tmp and so it was simply a matter of going there and copying the file to a permanent location. But it seems recent versions of Firefox no longer use /tmp. I have to go to the Firefox Cache directory and copy out the file from there. I tried this with the above, and it works. The Firefox cache directory is different for everyone, but mine is /root/.mozilla/firefox/nds4igz9.default/Cache
Or do I need an add-on for Seamonkey?
I have tried seamonkey, but its cache is always empty, so I think the designers must have it cache in ram and individual files are not visible.

Using Firefox 7.0.1 with the "Video DownloadHelper" add-on, I was able to save this video to hard drive. Been using this add-on for a while now, as it greatly simplifies the process of saving on-line videos. Hope this helps.

Seamonkey has a Cache folder in a similar location but it is filled with many folders with letters and numbers for labels and across the 20 or so I checked contained no images or video I could find.

Anyone out there in 5X9-land using Seamonkey and know the default location of viewed images and video, please?

Squeeze 5X9 & apt-get?

#1441 Post by edoc »

On another list someone mentioned:

> apt-get moo ... as well as other "easter eggs" in linux.

I tried apt-get and discovered that it was not implemented by default.

Then I found a reference to apt-get being possible but a bit challenging, for some reason (probably beyond my code-challenged understanding), to implement in Squeeze.

Has anyone created a PET or SFS for apt-get for Squeeze 5X9, please?

I checked some more on the video, and found that it is available on youtube... but, you notice at the end of the page, this message: "Music video by Matthew West performing The Heart of Christmas (Official Music Video). (P) (C) 2011 Sparrow Records. All rights reserved. Unauthorized reproduction is a violation of applicable laws. Manufactured by EMI Christian Music Group".
Looks to me as though they are being very specific about NOT copying or using this without authorization... as I suggested earlier, you could email Matthew West, or Sparrow Records, and ask for permission to use it at your church group.

Thanks!

I will check that out for future reference.

We made do with only public-domain Christmas music for the event.

Still would like to find a way - in Puppy - to convert music sold for iTunes to a non-proprietary format for personal use - on a non-Apple piece of hardware

edoc - good grief, I dont know whether to laugh or cry : - ) Glad you got thru the event with some music... sad that using "christian music" became such a problem.

So far as your iTunes question... hmm... if all you want to do is listen to / watch some iTunes video, I dont know what their policy is... if its a membership deal or what. If, as was the case with the Matthew West video, it is /also/ a video on YouTube, your problems are over. Get the addon for your browser from Mozilla addons page.

The one everybody uses is "Download helper"... 2nd most popular addon they have, with millions of installs, and it does work. Get that addon_ go to iTunes or whatever, and download the video. Again, I dont think there is a limit on watching videos at home_ it is public uses which concern them.
Once you download the video, use either mplayer or gnome-mplayer from the menu to play the video... one or both of those will be included with your copy of dpup-squeeze.
You shouldnt worry about any proprietary format unless you purchase a video and see some different extension... just download it and play it... the application / addon I mentioned - "Download Helper" - lets you choose what format to download in... so you will get either an FLV or an MPEG file in whatever directory the download goes to.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

OK, will do some more research.

It may be that I received "bad intel" on the iTunes stuff.

A teen told me that music sold via iTunes is in a proprietary format and may only be played on an Apple device- perhaps he was wrong.

As for the Christian Christmas music - it was for young children - so I was looking for "traditional" Christmas hymns performed by more-modern artists with a little more energy for the current generation.

They needed the words as well as the tunes as some of them do not know the traditional hymns.

It all worked out fine.

Thanks!
