How to install programs with apt-get?

#1 Post by andrew1964 »

I am trying to install a package using apt-get, but I get the result "apt-get: command not found"I have trawled linux pages all afternoon and the impression I get is that it SHOULD be there. I have tried to find it in the /usr/bin folder but it is not there, nor anywhere else either for that matter.
Is APT a part of this puppy or not?
Thanks for your help,
Andrew

andrew1964:

Welcome to Puppy mate.

Please supply your hardware and Puppy version.

Precise Puppy is based on Ubuntu.
Puppy running Ubuntu....because of the unique Woof build system.

Barry Kauler's little invention

""

" Precise Puppy is built from Ubuntu Precise Pangolin 12.04.1+
binary DEB packages, hence has binary compatibility with Ubuntu
and access to the vast Ubuntu package repository.
Couple that with Puppy's tiny size, speed and ease-of-use, and this is
one incredible pup!

Lucid is also an older Puppy running older Ubuntu.

" The brilliant new Puppy Linux 5.1, code-name "Lucid" as it is
binary-compatible with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx packages, has been
released. Lucid Puppy 5.1 is a "full-featured compact distro."

It's a Puppy, so it is fast, friendly, and fun, and it can also serve as
one's main Linux desktop.
Quickpet and Puppy Package Manager allow easy installation of many
of the best Linux programs, tested and configured for Lucid Puppy. "

Now up to Puppy 5.28 version 5

And what do you want to install.

We probably have it packaged already.

Thanks for the reply Chris. I am using the latest version of Exprimo, in a frugal install on an eeepc900 I thought I had posted in the thread to do with this build. I was trying to install a program called Amarok, using apt-get. This is the first time I have used linux so excuse me if I don't know a lot about it! Hope you can help!

Puppy doesn't have apt-get. Have you tried the amarok sfs posted in this thread?

Thanks, Muggins. This is the first post I've seen which confirms that the APT is not included in Puppy. At least now I can stop trying to solve that which is unsolvable!

I checked that link, but I'm not sure that is the correct package for the debian-based puppy. I think I need 2.3.1 for debian squeeze. Does anyone know of a PET or an SFS for debian squeeze?

You won't know whether it will work for you unless you download it & try. Apart from possible glibc incompatibilities, any other possible errors shouldn't be difficult to resolve.

Regarding apt-get have you checked out pussy?
Pussy: potentially a Puppy with a perfect package manager
Subject description: 100% debian apt-get works 100% of the time
There is a remastered pussy iso here.
