"Mouse Droppings" in GIMP
"Mouse Droppings" in GIMP
When using GIMP, especially with large files or those with several layers, I seem to be getting mouse droppings all over the image whenever i move my mouse.... Not only is this very annoying, but it also inhibits my ability to do any fine retouching of photos. This seems to happen whether I use gimp 2.6 in LucidPup or Ubuntu, so I know this is not just a puppy issue. For hardware, I am using a Dell Poweredge 1800 server (repurposed, of course) with a 2.8 GHz intel Xeon processor (800 MHz fsb) and 512 MB RAM. I know I am a bit low on Ram, but I also have at least 1 GB swap space. Can anyone help me out on this? Is this a RAM issue? Are there any settings in the preferences I can tweak to fix this?
Maybe a video driver/accelerator problem, as you have plenty cpu speed/cache compared to P111 desktops, even with only 512mb ram
datasheet, suggests ATI 7000m embedded video

I hope you are using Xorg, not xvesa?

maybe xorghigh/opengl/glxgears or somesuch will fix it?
xorg_high ....see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 184#436184
memory for that box is cheap on ebay - DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (ECC)
It'll take up to 12Gb!!

Im actually using L0wt3ch's puppy studio with the rt kernel (recompiled by me for LSI Fusion support), and I believe I do have the xorg-high package installed. I am definitely using xorg not xvesa. Its not just in puppy either.. it does the same in ArtistX (Ubuntu).
Speaking of a recompiled kernel, if there are any switches I can flip, I would have no problem recompiling again if I know which settings to make.

You're way cleverer than me, then....I'm just a ferret, reallyIm actually using L0wt3ch's puppy studio with the rt kernel (recompiled by me for LSI Fusion support)
Perhaps there's a clue here?

This would seem to suggest bios not handling mouse/interrupts...bios upgrade may or may not not fix it...apparently
It does suggest turning off any unused devices in bios....

I might have to try that.... Ill try it in a separate live session to see if it works.... Truth is, I don't like xvesa as much as xorg, when it comes to graphics, and I also work with blender occasionally for 3d stuff. I also should try it on my desktop, which has NVIDIA graphics and compare the results. No droppings on desktop should tell me, its a graphics adapter problem.
I have had this server up for months now and never really had any explicit IRQ problems. I also removed the RAID controller and use the 4 hard drives individually through the Fusion mtp controller. The only networking it does is with my desktop using VNC, ftp, samba, wol, and pxe... No internet access for it.

GIMP can be really resource-demanding when you work with big files/resolutions
I have dri installed and 1.25 GB RAM + swap and when I worked with 30cmx40cm resolution I added several layers and each task lasted several seconds to minute to complete
