What to do with obsolete and unmaintained junk in the wiki? |
|
Hi, I'm looking at moving some info from the old wiki to the new.
I wondered what people consider to be obsolete. For example on the Abiword page there are references to Puppy 1.06 and 1.07.
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Abiword
Would it be useful to add Puppy status to the Version table at http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyVersion
For example status could be active, unmaintained, superseded.

The problem isn't that the wiki has old stuff in it, the problem is that it's too big. Program info should not be in it.

I've just transfered and update AbiWord from old to new.
A little bit of basic program info is okay - especial if there is some Puppy specific thing. I agree that large chunks of program manual should not in there.
There was a lot of info about Puppy1, so in the new wiki I made three pages-
AbiWord - basic intro, how to install, compatibility
UsingAbiWord - basic setup of program - how to add dictionary and fonts
UsingAbiWordWithPuppy1 - Puppy1 specific info
----
I've made a Category for Migrated Pages-
Please help us review pages for inclusion in the new wiki, after review and transfer add CategoryMigratedToNewWiki tag

Hmm, forum's glitching so may be 2 posts
darkcity, can you do a vintage puppies section?
Then old wiki stuff and links from the forum could be included
Some posts I deal with helping people are from people with very early hardware who want to try early versions
see this thread for a recent one
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=65544
Both John Biles Legacy OS and ttuuxxx's 214X Classic Pup are 214 based and seem to be the earliest maintained, but have grown too big, or been updated in other ways for early low ram PCs, so people often still try 1 series or earlier, just as a base, as they have the earlier kernels
Is this being transferred to the new dokuwiki raffy set up?
thanks

I will try my best to incorporate 'vintage' stuff.
The dokuwiki was an experiment looking into improving language support. However there needs to be discussion with all wiki contributers, as to which is the best wiki software and whether it would be feasible to change if wikka wasn't chosen.
I have an idea for language support on wikka, but it would involve some program. see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=542618#542618

I agree the wiki is not good
Are you still having problems with coolpup, or has his admin rights been revoked now?
wiki language basis
maybe we can use some of this?

Else, is there some way we could use googlecode, and googletranslate?

By all means make a list of suggested pages to delete
or better still register and update

There was some talk of resurrecting the Drupal site
that was abandoned by the main developer but that was more a CMS site?

The possibility is that of installing a fresh Drupal site because the former site had too many customizations for a smooth upgrade. But before this is done, there should be a number of committed admins (3 or so) who shall constantly watch for spam and other unusual occurrences.
The database dump of the former Drupal is here (this URL will be displayed only for a limited time).

Thanks raffy.
So many opportunities for improvement, hosting, helping etc
A lot of work went into the Drupal site at the expense of the old wiki (which became the current wiki)
To be honest I think Tom was simply overwhelmed by the enormity of what he had started.
Coolpup and recently Darkcity are our main contributors on the existing wiki
More workers better results. Everyone welcome.
For example keeping this page up to date is open to anyone willing . . .

Coolpup has been adding lots of useful information. But some of the information isn't very accessible to a beginner like myself. Plus the style isn't what I'm used to on wikis. So I think working on the 'style guide' and 'using this wiki' pages would be useful. It is import to communicate via the comments to ensure people understand why a change is made - most wiki software has a seperate talk/discussion page for this purpose (not wikka).
Also, often I'm getting cannot connect to Sql Database - not sure if this is due to my connect/maintenance/something_else

Clear and user-friendly writing style is always welcome.
Wikkawiki has discussion, the comments under the page.

We'll have to see how the new 'platform' performs, as there was a migration by the host last June 13 (it was announced here). (That problem usually happens when the SQL server is separate from the web server.)

templates? |
|
The biggest two problems I had when I first was given creation rights was working out what format to use for my pages.
What about creating a set of "Standard Blank Templates" for creators to clone from (application, lib, puppy, utility, ...)? It would make the pages look a bit more professional and a hell of a lot easier to create, especially for newbies on their first one.
I'd also like to see somewhere on all Application pages, what puppy versions the applications have compatable pets for, and maybe if not in the ppm where they "live".
And lastly, i'd like to see the ability for a creator to delete a page they have decided not to go on with, rather than as present just delete the content.
And, I will have a few more to add hopefully next week, I've been a bit busy pet'ing and testing. I take it I still use the current one?
regards
scsijon

Hi ScsiJon
I agree with most things you said. I will work on the style guide and some templates. Everyones input would be desirable.
For easier navigation, I've been working on a breadcrumb system - which is quite nice for software. Not sure about other subject areas.
see http://puppylinux.org/wikka/SoftwareIndex
I'm thinking of adding an Unsorted category - Coolpup is very keen for not too many categories. But I think every page should be in at least one category. Page Index is a last resort for finding what you want.
