I downloaded, burned a CD and booted it on my P4 but it came up as a dark green screen with black text.

How can I correct it since I can't read anything?

Strange, please check the md5sum listed below against your download to make sure nothing was corrupted or messed up in the download. If your machine can boot Puppy 528 and has 512MB of ram then you should be able to run PupRescue 2.3 without a problem, i've tried it on several laptops and it worked fine on every one.

If the md5sum matches and you're still having problems let me know and i'll help you out the best I can, I already redownloaded it and matched it up against my original ISO to verify that the md5 was correct so if it downloads right for you then you shouldn't have any more problems, if you do try booting with the puppy pfix=nocopy to run directly from cd if running on a low ram system.

I downloaded PupRescue-1.0b.iso again and got the same md5 as before which is nothing like the one you posted.

This is from clicking on the name in post #1.

I'm confused...

This is on a P4 desktop with 2GB of RAM. The monitor is a SOYO LCD if that matters.

I didn't know you were downloading v1.0b, I am removing the link , it was buggy and no good. The md5 was for v2.3 please forgive me for the confusion. No the monitor does not matter at all.

Edit: Is anyone else using this that is having problems, I would like to know since i've tested it on several laptops and two desktops now and haven't seen any kind of problems with booting or using any of the programs.

That was the problem.

v2.3 booted no problem on my desktop.

v1.0b booted ok on my old Dell laptop

Thanks,

Roger

No problem, let me know how you like it and if you run into any more problems so that I can fix them if they show up but i'm pretty sure that I got everything.

That's a really pretty puppy. I like it a lot but I'm puzzled by the name.

I don't find recovery programs or maybe I just don't recognize the names

Downloaded v2.3 and used UNetbootin to install it to a 1gig thumbdrive.

Booted up the thumbdrive on my Acer Aspire D255E netbook and everything seems to be working well including the onboard wireless.

Well done DPUP5520,

@Roger Hunter
Almost every tool in it is a recovery program of some sort I'll just go through a few since it's a huge list.
1. partclone/partimage/ntfscopy(part of ntfsprogs) - all these are for creating clones/copies of your hard drive in case of a crash/hard drive is failing.
2. Smartmontools/gsmartcontrol - see if a hard drive is failing
3. Teamviewer - can remotely support a computer
4. ms-sys - write a new mbr
5. ntfsprogs - includes ntfsfix, ntfscopy, and ntfsundelete as well as about 15 other tools for working with ntfs partitions (built into puppy)
6. lcrack/rarcrack/jtr - recover lost passwords from windows/rar/zip among other container types.
7. aircrack-ng - Yes I know most see this as a "hacking" program but albeit that I quite often find airodump-ng along with Kismet quite useful for diagnosing network issues.
8. chntpw - reset Windows passwords as well as a registry editor
9. Opendoser - This is not a recovery program but rather an open source SBG format audio player that I often use while I am waiting for a process or recovery to finish, very relaxing.
10. Testdisk/Photorec - recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again/file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures.

15 random programs and quick explanations, some of the others that you may not recognize are because they never came out of beta states or were never really widely used but rest assured that I've tested and used every program on this cd and they all work quite well, if you don't know what a program is or how to use it Google is your friend.

@Tuxified

Thanks, I'm not nearly as good as most of the other people who release their derivatives on here neither am I as patient (I don't rebuild from scratch like most do as you can tell from the lupu_528.sfs) but I hope that for people that have the right understanding of most of the tools on here that it will be helpful for their repair/recovery needs and help them not have to go to another OS for those needs.

Ok, so I'm nearsighted but of the 15 files you listed, I managed to find only 3 of them in the menus.

I'm not doubting they're all in there somewhere, I just couldn't find them.

Most of the programs are CLI Apps(they have no UI) so there will be no menu entry for them that is why there is no menu entries for most of the apps, I had considered making the entire OS without X but the amount of work required to completely strip out everything having to do with video was just waay too much work.

Edit: If you are planning on using jtr without a dictonary (in incremental mode or brute force mode) you can't use the gui because of the way 1.7.8 is set up, you have to call john from /usr/local/run/john (just as a little side tip).

Thank you. I know it's a pain having to register Avast every time you boot up but it's way better(more accurate) than F-Prot and way smaller than AVG so I prefer it. BTW you might wanna upgrade the Flash if you plan on installing PupRescue frugally due to the zero day exploit that was just found on the version of Flash that PupRescue uses.

Avast came as number two on a test someone made and there where a thread linking to it here in forum and not I fail to find it again.
was it Bitdefender that was number one?
So I wold want to use Avast too :)
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Does PupRescue ask if you want Flash or not, the way standard Puppy does? That'd be nice, for example I have no use for Flash at all, and even less given the latest in a long line of exploits.

(Someday more people will give up on Flash just because they want their distro to live up to its promises of being more secure than Windows, but asking before running/installing is a good compromise for now.) And yes, I'm totally implying that people are making their systems closer to Windows vulnerability-wise by running Flash, although I would still trust that over Windows and its many other deliberate holes.
