I often wondered why there isn't a possibility in PPM to download the selected PET instead of installing it.
I prefer to download the PET to a directory of my choice.

Same for me.

It is already possible to easily download and save the pets in the puppy-lucid repo.
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/

Then choose pet-packages-lucid

This is where the Download link on puppylinux.com takes you.

Assuming you update luci manually, you can either first delete the old database (directory /usr/share/usb_modeswitch)

rerwin, This is what I did, manually delete /usr/share/usb_modeswitch and replace with the new one. I also updated /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswith.rules, which was also in the pet. Thanks.

Openshot 1.3.1 does not function anymore with Luci265, it used to with Pup525

live, I just installed Python 2.6 and Openshot 1.3.1 from the Puppy Package Manger and it seemed to work. It started and loaded and played an mp4 video anyway. (I am using the pre-266 luci though.)

You must install python first, and you must ignore the errors. I am irritated with PPM because those are not real errors--the libraries are just not where PPM expects them to be. Sometimes I can do some slight of hand to conceal the "errors" but not in the case of Openshot. I have requested the ability to turn the error checking off because all of the packages in the puppy-lucid repo are checked already, but that hasn't happened. Any hackers???

The errors you show are missing Qt files--perhaps you had a different Openshot?

Hi playdayz,

This is a fast, solid release. Everything appears to work fine with one glaring exception. It does not recognize my Wifi network, so no wireless internet access. It does not see my Belkin Wireless USB Adapter N300. There are a number of WPA and WEP connections available to connect.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi jim1911. I understand the first sentence (unfortunately), but I don't understand the second sentence--could you explain please. Thanks.
Oh, never mind, you mean that there are several wifi networks in the air around your place. Got it--sometimes it just takes me a while.

rerwin has made an adjustment for luci-266 already--so here's hoping Wink

btw, did you try to install Frisbee from the menu entry? Any difference?

I've done a reasonably extensive test of XineDVD on Merlin, the Pentium D. Works every bit as well as always.

It's a really close thing on space. Really close--but having it in PPM is still good. Thanks.

No problem. IIRC GNOME MPlayer does them as well so we've got a player already in the bundle. Continued XineDVD testing didn't show any more problems.

On a sad note, it appears that my K6 machine has blown up. PSU is definitely dead and I suspect the memory and possibly the mainboard and CPU have gone too. Sad

Luckily the HDDs appear to be fine and I have a spare Athlon XP1800+ mainboard CPU and RAM lying around in a box. IIRC Win98 didn't run on it though.

Jades, I know I am being silly about XineDVD and that gnome-mplayer plays dvd's just fine--but I think people are more used to software dvd players such as PowerDVD--XineDVD looks ande acts more like one of those. My wife is my test subject--she understands XineDVD and it feels comfortable and familiar to her.

Can someone confirm this is now solved?
I had no luck trying it on a new Atom box, with no internal HDD. Tried all possible bios settings...

I was trying to boot frugally (manual install) and changed the pmedia parameter to pmedia= usb-HD, usbHD and usbhd, but no luck so far.

It could very well be I'm the cause of these problems, as I have a tendency to overlook essential things. So if anyone succeeded in booting from usb without internal HDD, I would be grateful to hear about it, so that I can start searching for my mistakes Cool

If it will fit, XineDVD is a really quality addition and should be made the default DVD player if that's possible. It's superb. I only mentioned GNOME Mplayer because it's a workable existing solution we can fall back on if you can't get XineDVD to fit.

BTW, somewhat to my surprise my K6 appears to be working again, albeit with a temporary replacement for the PSU (which is categorically dead). Took it a while to sort itself out after fitting the working PSU and I really did think I'd fried the whole lot.

What is the USB device you are using?

Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected, expected?

Playdayz,
Please be aware that I do not consider myself an "expert" as wifi matters. I have dabbled with it on the outside -- added tempestuous' wifi drivers for 4.3.11. My knowledge is about module loading -- I can set up preferences in cases where multiple drivers recognize a particular device. But as to the intricacies of troubleshooting wifi, I am only a novice. I have avoided using wifi for telecommute-security reasons, but recently had to set up a WAP-bridge, which taught me a lot about that.

Having said all that, I am willing to respond to wifi issues that might be related to driver-module loading, but must rely on tempestuous for solutions to deeper issues.

As usual, I expect that anyone serious about having me diagnose a modem, sound or wifi problem to post/PM a pmodemdiag tar.gz file. It yields information useful for more than just modem issues.

I just don't want us to raise false hopes about any wifi wizardry on my part.
Richard

EDIT: After making that disclaimer, I googled the belkin device an find it requires module rt2870, which is not in luci. I will check tempestuous' thread about additional modules for luci's kernel. I will edit this message with any findings. R

Progress: Tempestuous has addressed this problem with an added driver, here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=481085&search_id=426541187#481085
I will install it to see if it includes the N300 (050d:945a). R

No progress: Although rt3572sta supports several Belkin (050d) devices, the N300 (945a) is not among them. Perhaps tempestuous could be requested to add it to his rebuild of that module. R
