- Shinobars sfs load on the fly 1.1 is great sfs loader on the fly. I have even compiled kernels using it. 1.1 version has one bug in the /etct/init.d/sfs_load script. It was noticed in Fatdog64 thread. The fix is easy. I have made fixed pet of it.
pemasu, Where is your fixed pet please? Thank you.

There is the issue of gparted creating ext2 and ext3 partitions with inode 256 and this is unsuitable for grub booting puppy

Could have a load of fun with this.....
Most certainly
I already translated /usr/share/desktop-directories.

The problem is in fact the "sub-sub-directories" or entrees in the menu. (eg "ROX-filer file management", in File system>>File managers.) So far I only found those in /usr/share/fbpanel/default. But there translation gets overwritten while refreshing the WM.

Thanks again.

That is the description picked up from the .desktop files in usr/share/applications/*.desktop. Editing all of those is a ton of work, but will be quicker if you use Menu Entry Maker. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 381#539381

Playdayz, I think I posted it in this thread earlier, but here it is again or first time. Too lazy to check if it was posted already.

Oh, that is really good. CP/M was not for nerds--you referenced a drive that was not mounted and bang--DOA.
Tubeguy, I think it was, was using something like the attached.
Maybe tubeguy will send something.
the 5.2.5 default a little "busy", a little too personal, at first glance.
I think that is a fair statement.

The PUP526 Project looks well. Report of a stable system is attached.

But, I found 2 issues: 1st - Hardinfo, and 2nd - HTOP
HTOP
There is one issue with Live media (first-boot) system and HTOP. HTOP works fine as long as I don't change its default opening desktop size. If I grab a corner and expand it, the Function keys no longer work.

Hardinfo (see this in report)
After "Personalize Settings" is run, proper setting of /etc/hosts occurs AS WELL AS hostname in "hostname" command. All system pointers are accurate.
BUT, in Hardinfo, its showing very 1st system hostname. (see "Environment Variables"). It should be showing current hostname value, which, when I run "set" shows the correct name. This probably should be reported to Hardinfo folks.

Hope this helps

Wonder why this puppy with the older kernel 2.6.33 now can not connect.
The troublesome Broadcom wifi chips have a long and chequered history with Puppy. Some variants of this wifi chip will only work properly with the proprietary "wl" driver, instead of the opensource "b43" driver included as standard with most recent Puppy versions.
To complicate matters, the b43 driver depends on an underlying driver called "ssb" which also supports a range of other Broadcom devices such as USB interfaces. So when you install the proprietary driver, you must disable (or unload) the ssb driver to avoid a conflict, then other devices (especially on laptops) may fail to work!
The only comprehensive way to deal with the situation is to modify the ssb driver to disable support for device ID's also supported by the proprietary driver. That way there will never be a conflict, and the two drivers can happily coexist.
But this modification must be carried through to the ssb driver contained in Puppy's initrd, and there's significant work involved in remastering Puppy to achieve all of this.
There has been one such Puppy variant produced in the past by forum member jrb (which I helped with) -
"Special Puppy431 for broadcom 4312 (and other?) wifi cards"
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=50570

At present, the best practical solution is for Broadcom wifi users to install the proprietary driver as an add-on. In my opinion the proprietary driver is too difficult to deal with as an integrated solution.
And quite frankly, the problem is caused by Broadcom, not by any failing of Linux.

For the very latest 2.6.39 kernels (and future Puppies) there is now a new opensource Broadcom wifi driver called "brcmsmac" which should solve the problem.
tempestuous, thanks for the info and your time. broadcom's lack of "attention to detail" will be remembered by this consumer while striving to learn compiling wifi drivers. The alternative as you mention is using Snow Puppy and limited others having the driver built in. It could be an older computer that connected readily with Puppy 511 and 520 and not this HP I've had for few months.

pemasu's broadcom driver pet he porvided here does work and I understand will for other puppies with the same kernel.

Did frugal hdd install to ext4 manually copied files. Added these packages:

dhcpcd-5.2.9-i486

Frisbee-beta-2-lucid52

wpa_supplicant-0.6.9-i486.4X..Actually, is wrong one. It's listed as for puppy 4.2 and 4.3 but works so far.

wpa_supplicant-0.6.9.lupu.pet is listed for lupu 5.2. playdayz has a complete Frisbee pet listed in same thread see link below.

usb-modeswitch-data_20100826. this may not have been needed to add.
SM-21rc1
broadcom_sta-5.6.48.36-k2.6.33.2

-Computer-
Processor : 2x Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU P6100 @ 2.00GHz
Memory : 2520MB (201MB used)
Operating System : Puppy Linux 0.26
User Name : root (root)

-Display-
Resolution : 1024x768 pixels
OpenGL Renderer : Unknown
X11 Vendor : The X.Org Foundation

pemasu's broadcom pet works well as did jemimah's Frisbee. SM-21rc1 is quick and all functions appear good to go.

Problem noticed with the cursor preview hovering over browser tabs. The preview is scrambled

Here's an updated dhcpcd (hehe, even smaller), it's important to have a later DHCP client when people talk about IPv6

disconnects in the lucid series.

disconnects in the lucid series.

As reported before, I still suffer from disconnects in the lucid 5.x.x series.
The stay_connected script didn't cure this.
It can happen at any time, while downloading sw, while chatting, while browsing, while watching youtube.
So not specifically when being idle.

@Iguleder, can the dhcpcd you just posted be of help for me?
The actual one is 5.1.5

I have the same problem too; with official releases it's a real pain in the ass, I get disconnected once in 2 minutes of browsing. I tried everything.

I came into conclusion my WiFi card is problematic; this problem persists with any kernel I tried but somehow the 2.6.32-lts kernels provide a better experience, so I always remaster the latest official release with the latest one in the series.

My suggestion to you is to try a newer kernel - try one of pemasu's puplets to see if the problem exists with 2.6.35, 38, etc'. If it isn't, it's the kernel - just wait for 5.3 or any other Puppy with a more recent kernel.

rerwin has submitted some improvements--maybe that will help. They will be in 262 or 262.

installed Foxfire 3.6, opera11.11 portable, tor1.1-11-lucid52 and all functioned without issue. tor did require psync time adjustment then was good to go.

chromium-14 fixed and chromium-14-lucid525 failed to install.

os seems very responsive, even tor seems more so.

Remember to copy the save file and change the filename so that it starts luci rather than lupu - for example lucisave-merlin.2fs instead of lupusave-merlin.2fs - what you're seeing is Puppy 'Working as Designed' and avoids test versions munging your main save. That said, always back up anyway.

Are you using a Static IP Address setup? Puppy only auto-configures when you're using DHCP.
Zhaan - AMD K6 2 500, 512MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 VR. Full install Wary 5.5 HardInfo Report
Merlin - Core i5-4590, 8GB RAM, Radeon R9 270X. Slacko 5.7.0

I got Chromium installed, but it crashes a lot in this Lucid.

Chromium just isn't working for me. But did get Opera 11.50-10784-i386-opt.sfs installed and working after installed pemasu's sfs_load-1.1-fixed.

Iron-12-lucid installed and functions without issue so far.

I just noticed that Rox filer -> Right-click -> Window -> Terminal Here opens an rxvt terminal, instead of urxvt. We fixed the menu option that did that so I think we could fix this. But where????

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am using Chromium 14 from the lucid525 pet (which I fixed like pemasu's). It installed and ran the first time. This is in luci-262 though. Perhaps someone got a bad download--use this link for ibiblio.

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... cid525.pet
But I do remember that Chromium 14 was flaky, so I started using Iron 12.
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... -Lucid.pet

Chromium 14 is a bleeding edge nightly build, guaranteed to be flaky somehow ;-)

Over time I tried a frisbee 5.2 beta pet, but I think it was beta 1.
But the problem didn't go away.

Will try this beta 2 one.

@Iguleder.
I followed quite a while pemasu's cold puppy's and I didn't have much problems anymore. These puppy's use frisbee.

So frisbee beta 2 could well be a solution
