Upgrade from Lucid v5.2.5

#1306 Post by Tui »

I have a full install of the version 525 and have loaded
all my extra goodies.

I want to know is it safe to upgrade via the normal way
with this version without blowing away all my other loaded
progs.

Thanks Tui

I tried both versions of Pwidgets from Quickpet and everything except the analogue clock is displayed in white.Seen this before in previous versions.

Lucid 527rc2
Frugal + save on USB flash drive

After several reboots the speaker icon for Retrovol is not showing in the tray.
Worked OK on initial boot and frugal install.
Only after several reboots does this happen.

Run Retrovol from console get this:
sh-4.1# retrovol
Cannot read file: /root/.retrovolrc
Using defaults...
retrovol: hcontrol.c:573: snd_hctl_load: Assertion `hctl->count == 0' failed.
Aborted

In /root/ there is no .retrovolrc file.

xerrs.log has this info:
/usr/bin/openbox
retrovol: hcontrol.c:573: snd_hctl_load: Assertion `hctl->count == 0' failed.
Cannot read file: /root/.retrovolrc
Using defaults...
EXIT="Exit on mouse-over"
/usr/sbin/delayedrun: line 129: 6065 Aborted retrovol -hide ${BGOPT}
openbox
Generating /root/.fbpanel/default...

/usr/sbin/delayedrun: line 129: 6335 Terminated $a

Update:
Copied .retrovorc file from the 527.sfs of the 527rc2 ISO to /root/ of the frugal install.
Booted frugal install.
Still no Retrovol speaker icon on tray.
Looked in: /root/.retrovolrc was there.

In xerrs.log now get this:
/usr/bin/openbox
retrovol: hcontrol.c:573: snd_hctl_load: Assertion `hctl->count == 0' failed.
EXIT="Exit on mouse-over"
/usr/sbin/delayedrun: line 129: 6122 Aborted retrovol -hide ${BGOPT}
openbox
Generating /root/.fbpanel/default...

/usr/sbin/delayedrun: line 129: 6385 Terminated $a

killall: vattery: no process killed
killall: powerapplet_tray: no process killed

I would not do it because 527rc2 is still in testing and not the final version.

If you want to do it to test upgrading a full install it should work, but I would not do it to your main full install. Only to a full install you do not need.

Retrovol is not showing in the tray
Already flagged up issues with Rv on previous page, except in my case the tray icon was the only access - didn't show in Menu and had been muted. We've travelled this road before!

The project to update Lucid 5.2.5 has been cancelled. It was meant to fill the gap between Lucid 5.2.5 and Slack Puppy but it took too long and has become a distraction. Slack Puppy will be a better product in all ways and it is what deserves the community's attention now.

The last build Luci-528 has been released as a Puppy derivative named Two-Headed Dog.

This is new knowledge for me. But I may be getting the idea. Does the following make sense?

Could the "restart-X" shutdown option include the logout and login commands (or whatever the correct commands are) before restarting xwin? Does xwin run in the "main console"?

My thinking is that a new option in /tmp/wmexitmode.txt -- say, "relogin" -- could trigger the re-login logic in xwin. The Personal Settings function would detect that a hostname change was made and, in a manner similar to the dialogue resulting from a time zone change, have the user click on either a button to do the relogin-restart or a button to cancel the change of hostname. The relogin option would execute a new "wm..." script, wmrelogin, that would be similar to the wmrestart script. Or maybe wmrestart could be modified to accept an argument to have it set the relogin option for xwin to read.

That would seem do-able relatively quickly -- if it has a chance of actually working. The question, then, is: What is the environment situation when xwin runs for a restart of X?
Richard

EDIT: Just now see the 528 notice. I am stunned. Why not call it lupu528 and be done with it? Or lupu 5.3.

Over the years I have seen a number of discussions regarding official versions and version numbering. For many this is very confusing, even to an old dog like me.

It does make some sense to have Official releases separate from many other derivatives.

My main point is, as long as it has a unique title and version identifier it can be recognised as being different.

I never really liked the idea of Lucid versus Lupu versus Luci. It just compounded the confusion. I think Alpha, Beta and RC was enough to let people know it was in development.

My thoughts on numbering has always been as simple as this:

Name-5.2.8

The first digit (5) represents major upgrades/versions
The second digit (2) represents minor upgrades
The third digit (8) represents bug fixes

An example of Name-5.2.0 with a bug fix and some additional changes/apps would be Name-5.3.1

I suppose it is possible to have something like Name-5.87.764 if there were many changes and bugfixes, at least you would know what has affected the change.

Alpha, Beta and RC would not normally be added to a bugfix release.

I didn't post this to create a lot of discussion, simply to provide my point of view and what I believe would be a simpler method.

Smokey01

BTW the product has always been brilliant, and still is.

Just to keep this discussion understandable for everyone, two questions:

1. what were the "unimportant, obscure bugs" and who chased them?

2. Who is/are the person(s) you accuse of having 'personal agendas'?

Acer eMachines eM350-21G16i .

Booted fine off a multiboot usb.

Sound down a bit...,.60% plus....adjusted in Alsamixer.
So the result is good.

"""""""

Screen appears good....1024 x 600

""""""""

Wireless just worked with the Classic Network Wizard.

No complicated steps as set out below.

I do not use the Simple Network Wizard as I have

>> a split name ............. 15 keys

and >> WPA2-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key)

I did of course test >> wlan0 and >> Auto DHCP

"""""""""""

This was on the second boot.

Then I noticed that you had Frisbee.....bugger.
Better test it out.

Reboot for the 3rd time.

I can't find Frisbee....>> Ah! it's under internet in the menu.
Frazzling my brain man.

So I see that you recommend reboot with a save file
and then use Frisbee.

Blow that..I install the included pet.....No save file just my first boot.

Astonishment >> it works. Fantastic.

I must try this Lucid 527RC out on a friends EeeePc which I
have never managed to get working with wireless..

"""""""""""

And what's this >> Two Headed Dog??
You lot are onto me ha!

And Isomaster is in the menu...Tick box >> gold star.

Take your time releasing this.
As stressful as it is....does the thing never finish,
you have taken great and classy strides.

"""""""""""

I thought that I better test a browser.
Downloaded Chromium from Aarnet...other sites had failures,
but I see that it tests all sites anyway...smart...
and added Flash when the message came up.

Tried Youtube and I am glad to report that Ray Davies
was singing along no problemo.

Guess I'll sit out the next one. Kinda hard to work up any enthusiasm after that.

Oh, and I'll indulge myself in saying "I told you so". (I mean about keeping this only to bug fixes, and a select few at that.)

Well, I guess a lesson was learned. Look at the bright side.

Is there a comprehensive list of the known bugs that remain in Puppy 5.2.x?

Ah Larry,

I didn't lift a finger (since 520). How am I "cheif dev"? (re: "Two-Headed Dog"). I'm only an idiot that knows (sometimes) which button to push on my keyboard, and I haven't done that much lately in a Lupu sense.

However I think the puplet idea is not so bad. Not for my agenda, (erm I don't have one) but I think for your peace.

You've worked even harder than Warren did on 4.2 and that was an outstanding achievement. With due respect to my friend Warren I think lupu series eclipses 4.2X series and has expanded Puppy's demographic, interest and most importantly fun!

Be comfortable brother in the fact that your early inspiration with Karmic was ground breaking stuff with Barry's woof. Without that work, Spup, Dpup, Mpup, (Apup anyone? [even Wary/Quirky]) would not nearly be where they are now.

'nuff drivel.. Cheers, Mick
