It's working well too.

I'm back on Slackware 14.1 for the moment as I still can't get networking set up and running properly on 14.2. Since Slackware still includes Blackbox by default, I've installed a bunch of themes from 2005 so that it looks like the setup I had in 2005 on my *old machine; the setup is very economical on resources, as it had to be back then.

Would still like to find out what's going wrong in 14.2, but for the moment I can't really spare the time or trouble; maybe I'll try again later.

* I had a Pentium 100 with 32 MB of RAM, and was still able to run Opera. Those were the days! BasicLinux was a great distro for older computers; I don't know if it's still going, but I don't think it's been updated for a while.

Weird, I had a major problem getting networking to work in Arch. Networking works fine for me in Slackware 14.2, but then again it is running in virtualbox.

The full install has a lot of applications included +
Vlc-2.2.4,Kodi-16.1,Qupzilla-2.0.1 and more can be added with gslapt
package manager.

The installer will also do a basic install and another install (forget
what it's called) with fewer packages built in.

Edit: I did another "full" install to an HP desktop.
The 2 other install options are "core" and "basic".

Here's another sort of unique mix: CentOS 7 with Ubuntu Mate desktop. I set it up, on dual monitors & an old AMD cpu & motherboard for a long-term stable place (the definition of CentOS) to do all our video encoding for our Ipads/Itouch/Iphones using HandBrake. Still kind of weird getting my brain/eyes to remember that I am in a 'rpm-yum' OS and not an 'apt-get' OS. I mean, Mate is traditionally for Ubuntu/Deb-related distros. Mate comes here with the Yum Extender software program (basically a synaptic rpm model), and Caja, not exactly my favorite file mgr but it will suffice. All the other stuff is pretty normal for a MATE DE install. Anyhow, all is good, stable, and surprisingly customizable with this ole' trusty CentOS. Enjoy the pic!

Another vote for Salix! I've gone back a version (to 14.1) because I need the 32-bit distro, but I look forward to trying Salix 14.2 (32-bit) soon.

I did the full install + added Vlc-2.2.4,Kodi-16.1,Mplayer,some kdegames, and then compiled some others including Smplayer and Smtube.
Also changed the settings in gslapt and updated to the newest kernel (had to update grub after that)

It's working well except for 720p videos in Kodi, SD videos play fine.

I made the mistake of installing Salix with the xfs filesystem, forgetting that when I install Salix I need to get inside the file structure to install the .dmrc file and then set up its permissions (no other distro I've come across will read xfs filesystems or copy files to and fro from them).

So I deleted it all and installed Slackware 14.2 - and, once again, netconfig won't work. Not a great day for me distrowise (thank goodness Manjaro Live still works; I'm posting from it now).

[UPDATE: I've just installed Salix 14.1 Mate Live to my hard drive and it went without a hitch, including the .dmrc file which loads the window manager on bootup. So thanks again for the advice!

It's working well, Vlc,Smplayer,Kodi etc.

I know everyone does not have the latest peripheral hardware to report on when they post in this thread.

So here is my contrib. Iphone 7, Samsung S7 Edge. Both work as routers on this laptop and mount and share files also. Skull candy Bluetooth external speakers and headphones just work. Touchscreen, Wacom Pen, all wirless and lighted keyboard just work. I find this distro better than Mint, Ubuntu
vanilla, Elementary OS, Zorin OS, to keep my post in the Ubuntu spinoff flavor section of supplying info.

Redshift, Brightness applet in XFCE, all F keys just work on this rig <YMMV from mine>

It is dumbed down for Windows refugees and to be frank. Is my lazy mans install and runner.
For a experienced Linux user like me. It is the bees knees. When this install goes EOL. I'll probably go with the latest version unless something happens with development for what ever reason.

I always say. Run what you brung. If it fits good. Don't listen to what other people say you should do. I do Salix, AntiX, MX, Carolina Puppy, depending on what gear I have at hand. This distro just happens to be the Cinderella glass slipper for this Dell XT2.

Edit: PS; microsoft is killing skype for us linux users. Either wine or Windows VM may be the only skype alternative in Linux. Look it uo if you don't believe me. March 1 is the cut off date. Better learn how to use Jisti or
Pidgen I guess.

2nd edit: forgot to mention. pcmcia to hdmi card works ootb also on this install.

Have you used "appear.in"? OscarTalks recommended it to me and it's real good for some applications. Just use a recent browser (Chrome, Slimjet, Vivaldi, Opera) and go to the appear.in website and make up a "room" name. Anyone who goes into that room can communicate in a conference call. Dead simple.

Wouldn't the web version of skype work? I don't really use skype, but I'm curious though.

My computer needs a service at the moment and has difficulty booting, so I've gone for the conservative option; Slackware (14.1, 64-bit) with Fluxbox as the window manager and Gkrellm for system info. It looks as though it's 2005 again, but at least it all works (oh, and Quirky does too)!

If you use slackbuilds, I recommend getting a tool that will create a proper menu for fluxbox (It won't be dynamic, but atleast it would list all the installed programs).

Thanks for the advice. I've used menumaker in the past and found it effective (and it doesn't need slackbuilds, as it compiles directly and quickly from the source file).

My favourite menu tool though is one which bypasses the fluxbox menu system entirely; dmenu, which accompanies the dwm window manager and which is completely keyboard-operated. Typing in the first letter or two of the program you're looking for takes you right to the list of programs starting with those letters, making program selection easy and convenient.

Is the Aspire dying?? Or just the storage means/devices needing a good wiping?? Sorry to hear if it is the former. I'm always fighting trying to keep these circa 2000-2006 systems I have up and running, though to be fair, 2 of them are ~2008-2009. But the late 90s Pentium I have, and some old AMDS, man, talk about your tempermental ladies

Thanks for asking. As far as I can tell it just needs a good wiping / de-dusting and a new CMOS battery, but I can't get the side panels off to clean it so it looks like a professional job.

I'd also like to bump the RAM up to 4GB; it's asymmetrical at the moment with a 1 GB and a 2 GB stick installed.

In other news; I've recently installed Slackel 6.0.8 (Openbox version). It works well except that the selection of software is lightweight for my taste; for example, the default browser is Midori and Claws Mail is used for the e-mail program, whereas I mostly tend to use the more fully-featured Mozilla programs such as Firefox and Thunderbird. (Actually, Claws is more than adequate for me but I find it harder to set up than Thunderbird).

I also finally got round to installing Salix 14.2 (32-bit). It's working well but Salix now comes with XFce by default, and I'm missing the attractive sheaf of blue wallpapers the Mate version of 14.1 came with. It also has no pdf viewer (evince, my first choice, kept segfaulting in my system so I installed xpdf instead).

I like Dpup Stretch so well I thought I give the 64 bit Debian a try:

I like this one too, I installed Kodi-17.0 and a few other
applications.
No problems so far.

I'm posting from Alienbase's excellent live spin of Slackware 14.2 (64-bit edition). It's working well and some of the more difficult sites which still rely in Flash to show animations are displaying well too.

(Not to mention the fact that networking sets itself up automatically and works with no trouble, unlike the installed version of 14.2 where I can't get netconfig to work at all).

I've now installed the latest (February 2017) version of Zenwalk 8. It's working well (including networking, which didn't work on recent editions of Zenwalk) and has the very latest version of LibreOffice and the beta version of Firefox 52.

It does though have a smoky dark blue/black theme in XFce by default, with transparent terminals, which mightn't be to everyone's taste. Credit to the Zenwalk devs for trying something bold and different though. Also, as I've found before in Zenwalk the spellchecker in LibreOffice doesn't work; I'm sure there's a fix for it, but many first time users simply wouldn't bother trying to find one.
