Sorry to bug you again...was wondering if I could ask a question about Gecko-rolling (since it is based on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, which I use as one of my main, big distros) and SSDs. Have you installed Gecko-Rolling on any SSD? If so, can I ask if you've done or do anything special in prepping the SSD (assuming it is full install or a big partition install)?

I bought a new SSD, and am trying to read about how Linux handles SSDs and that each distro might be need to set up differently to optimize and maintain the SSD. From reading, I found that Ubuntu and Linux Mint changed their distro (kernels) to install and set up fstrim to run once a week, which is vital for SSD health. But other Linux distributions, including Debian and Fedora, do not. The user has to set everything (script included) up manually in order for "fstrim" to run.

What did you do for OpenSUSE (I see in your specs listed, when you test distros, you usually always mention it is on a SSD)? I read this from OpenSUSE: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:SSD_discard_(trim)_support , but as is sometimes typical from OpenSUSE explanations, you can't make heads or tails sense (as a user) what you're actually supposed to do.

I have Gecko on one SSD (128GB Verbatim USB-3.0) but I wasn't aware
that any special maintenance was required to keep the SSD healthy.
I didn't use that particular install much and am now running Gecko
Gnome from the hard drive.

There may be a setting in Yast that deals with it but the openSuse
forum would be the place to find out more about installing to an SSD I guess.

Ok, one, two, three HAILS for Sparky Linux! This distro (based on Debian Testing) is carving out a niche, quickly, and justifiably. They're from Poland, and they use Debian Testing as the base, and then give you the choice of an incredible array of desktop environments to put on top. All from inside their graphical CLI (sounds counterintuitive, I know, but try it, it is awesome and simple) after you download a minimal install (basically the Debian Testing Minimal ISO (~480MB). So, after getting the Minimal ISO installed, fired up the "Sparky-Installer", and easily went thru the paces setting up the Deepin Desktop environment. And I can confirm (as you are hearing from the Youtube videos popping up about it---and also what I mentioned a few msgs ago in this thread)....the Deepin DE has to be contending for not only the desktop envirnoment of the year, but also the future. It is simple, yet powerful, fast, and it is drop-dead gorgeous. The Deepin team (In China) has done an incredible job (it is the fastest growing DE in Asia right now, and spreading).

Below are some pictures of Deepin on this Sparky Debian Testing. I hope the pics can do this DE some justice. From the little things like holding your mouse over the sound icon in the taskbar and just scrolling the wheel to either raise or lower the sound (genius, right?), to the simple, tight elegance of their full on dark theme & icons (this theme even wraps up Firefox and Thunderbird, something other Linux themes struggle with and force you download add-on dark themes for those). Also, look at that beautiful, transparent launcher (just click the purple rocket in the left taskbar, and their is everything to launch in your system). Also, look at the system settings, to the right, just click the settings icon on the middle-right of the taskbar, and look at that simple full-side right hand pop up that has every setting for the system. Overall, just tightness, simpleness, and beauty.

Short end of the stick here? You're doing yourself, if you are a Linux luver, a disservice if you are not giving the Deepin DE a try. It is, with Enlightement and Moksha DEs, the future of DE Linux environments. In fact, it is arguably the one everyone is aspiring to be right now.

I'm always (OK, usually) willing to admit when I've been wrong about something as I don't believe you can learn any other way. Anyway, I have to eat humble pie now.

One of my favourite distros in the past was the "full" version of OpenSUSE; Li-f-e (Linux For Education). It's a big download but it contains pretty much all the software I need and use on a regular basis, and all the multimedia codecs as well (which even Mint no longer has now, apparently).

I've now installed the latest version, 42.1.1, and done a full update overnight (about 1.8 GB of downloads) and I can't see any problems at all with bootup or anything else, despite the fact it runs on systemd. Lesson learned.

Really, really impressive. If anyone is interested in a systemd-free (uses SysVInit) stable Debian Jesse with an extremely well fleshed-out and complete Xfce desktop (which can be a biotch to arrive at with Debian, IMHO) - including a number of very neat and useful Anti-X/MX applications/modules, and it's own additional repo with a GUI app specifically for it - I'd heartily recommend giving this distro a good spin!! If only I had a spare HD to install to... I'd really like to run with this one for a good long while. Thumbs way up!

This distro's popularity appears to be increasing, and I can see why. Heck, even Dedoimedo might like this one!

In other news, I've just installed Mint 18.1 Cinnamon (which has just come out) and it's working well with no problems so far. The only slight letdown for me is that I miss the old default Mint wallpaper, with the 3-D letters and numbers casting shadows on a grey background. They've stopped producing (or at least including) it for some reason.

Ha - whaddya' know... Another feature of MX-16 I'd like to explore are the remastering and USB tools - looks as if one could create a USB with persistence using 'em.

Mint is great, probably the most polished, complete Linux distro OOTB that exists today. I've had tremendous luck and stability with two regular Mint Mate installs (one going on 2-1/2 years). I'm sure you can find that favorite wallpaper set... actually, it's likely they're even in Quiana/Rebecca's repo(s)... I'd guess - install Synaptic, update the package lists, and search on, say, "Rebecca artwork" - might find 'em...

If you get the 'USB with persistence' thing figured out on MX, please let us know. I have a fond spot for MX when I first tried it about ~2yrs ago, and saw how nicely it was laid out (also I've always had and still do a current AntiX cd for running off of the Cd).

As far as Mint, is there any of us that hasn't tried it and/or still have it on one of our HDs' partitions? I do. Mint just keeps getting better and better and better, and they slowly but surely have left Ubuntu & Unity behind. Everything just works, and they include everything in the distro plus the Out house sink. Problem is, coming from the puppy world, I like to get my hands dirty sometimes, and there's nothing ever to do in Mint (actually, it is because you really can't customize Mint like you can most any other linux distro). But Mint, especially Sarah, sure has been stable for me, almost...dare I say...as stable as my trusty CentOS 7.




P.S. Any of you run Manjaro XFCE? I've been using it for ~3 weeks now on one machine and I am quite impressed how far along they've come. There's still some of the usual Manjaro problems (like their infernal bootloader never playing nice if any other Linux distro bootloader takes over, and their still quirkiness with the package managers & updating), but overall, Manjaro has done far more than any other distro---outside of Antergos----I can see to bring Arch to the masses or to those who no longer want to fool around going thru the lengthy steps to set up a full arch install. I'm too old anymore...lol.....to find the beauty in self-flagellation when setting up either a full Arch (and/or also Gentoo) install.

Oh, wait, d'oh - I see your old favorite wallpaper includes the release number in the artwork. Bummer, then. Unless you make/modify one yourself!

Will do. A short fit of researching it last night gave me the impression that it can only be done from a full install of MX to a hard drive. So... must find myself a spare hard drive...!

I don't think the numbers etc. in that image file can be edited directly (using GIMP or something similar), otherwise I'd have a go myself. I may ask on the Mint forums if anyone's managed to do it. Thanks for replying anyway Bob.

Below is a pic of the Porteus' gang latest 3.2.1 CINNAMON desktop, x86_64, 29 Nov 2016 ISO. Everything is based on Slackware 14.2 (USM Package Manager), and I gotta say, they really put together something nice here. Theme looks great, it still boots the lightening fast Porteus is known for, and it is smooth whether running off the SD card I installed it to, or running it fully in ram. The ISO comes 270MB. I installed (via the USM) the latest Firefox, Chrome, Mtpaint, Redshift & GTKHash modules, and it brought it all up ~390MB. With Gnome Player (and a lot of other stuff) already included by default, this Cinnamon edition is really nice. Congrats/Kudos to the Porteus team! Happy Holidays all!! (in the pic, the System Settings menu is on the left, the top right is Nemo file manager, below it is gnome-terminal, and then a shot of the taskbar menu with it resting on "Internet'.....it's a dual monitor setup, going right to left)
