Are you sure it isn't a hardware issue as a HDD or some bad caps?
Some of my old computers just refuse to boot from a cd/dvd.

Is the integrity of your iso download good.
Try installing from a usb drive.
Thanks for your suggestion poorguy. TBH though I've now tried both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of MX-15 and both have the same problem: so I don't think it's likely that it's just one bad download, especially since more than 90% of the distros I try install just fine from a DVD. MX-15 boots just fine into RAM (both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions) and runs well from there, it's just the installation which goes awry.

All the same, I might try an MX-15 installation from a USB drive if I can do it without having to reformat the drives first (I have two and at the moment they're both used for data storage).

As I've said here before a similar situation arises when I install Salix; every version of Salix without fail now has the same issue with a missing desktop because the file which loads it on bootup is either missing or corrupt. I know how to work around it (and am willing to, because it's a good distro), but it's clear to me that it's the distro which is at fault and not my computer as I don't have the same problem with any other one.

I'm still running Slackware64-14.2 on a couple of computers.
I wanted VLC-2.2.4 so I went to SlackBuilds.org and downloaded the slackbuilds for it and it's dependencies.
It took approx 6 hours to get it done on this computer.
2x Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz
It must have taken the maker of the slackbuilds a very long time
(thanks!)
Anyway, it's working well.

Edit: On a newly installed,updated,and setup Slackware64-14.2 only 3
out of 40 vlc-2.2.4 related SlackBuild files were needed to get a
working vlc.

Edit2: I also installed Slackware64-14.2 to the hard drive of my
Gateway desktop.

Linux Lite 3.0 on an abandoned eMachines EL1300G single core processor. It came with Win Vista. I have it dual booting. Linux Lite is pretty good and runs reasonably well on this old hardware. I was able to setup my wireless HP printer pretty effortlessly. File sharing to access a Win box was pretty easy, and bluetooth (which I don't really use) has a bug in receiving files.

However, I like Puppy's speed. I tried Tahrpup 6.0.5 and Slacko 6.3.0 running off a CD, but they both froze up where the computer was unresponsive, and I had to reboot. Lucid 5.2.8 on a CD runs very stably. Puppy takes more effort, in my experience, to get things running. Finally, after years of using Puppy, I learned from the forum how to setup wireless printing. I still can't get SAMBA shares working on 5.2.8. I haven't tried Bluetooth. I had high hopes for Tahr, but it doesn't seem to work well on this hardware.

Hey dk60902,

I use to use Linux Lite 2.2 but had trouble keeping the damn updates working when google chrome stopped supporting 32 bit and caused all of the problems with the update manager. I got tired of changing everything so I dumped it. Linux Lite was a good Linux distro to.

James C,

Dam# I would have sworn there was no way there was another Stella user on murga :) Though I recently made the mistake of downloading/installing CentOS 7 to a partition to test it overall....and doggone the RHEL gang, they went and made "7" hard to resist by fixing a few of the bugs with Anaconda & also how it installs, plus they gave us more control with a new bootloader. But, that said, I am still not entirely sold on the changes systemd has brought, it not being fully backward compatible, along with nearly every administration tool now being different.

I'm another one (nitehawk is too). I use Stella when I need a distro which is rock solid stable, and to be sure that nothing's going to go wrong (for example, filling in a form online).

I find the 6.x series of CentOS much easier to use and set up than the 7.x series; I have never yet managed to get networking going on the 7 series or any distro derived from them (such as Scientific Linux).

Colonel,

I hear ya about the "stability" thing. It's the whole reason I stick with and/or keep coming back to CentOS for certain things. Hey, I remember earlier (some weeks back) you talking about antix/MX. I set both of them up, LAN-wise, recently (have a hard drive with ~30 partitions for distro experimenting, governed by grub4dos). The antix-16 is wicked fast, simple, actually kind of delightful, much like our pups. The MX-15 was no slouch either, and you can tell their community who participated in developing it gave quite a bit of thought how they wanted their desktop menu to look & function.

What has been intriguing me recently is the new "KDE Neon", different, actually separate, from Kubuntu. This is the KDE developors themselves (using xenial as a base, like most everyone nowadays) setting up their own distro for one sole purpose: to showcase, and get this---stabilize---(lol, for any KDE fan, we have to giggle a bit when we use the words "KDE' and "Stability" in the same sentence)....anyhow, the KDE gang have created a quite nice distro solely dedicated to KDE & Plasma's workings. If you give it a try, though, make sure to first (on the install DVD and/or USB) edit the little "install reporting home" they put in to track how many people install it (they clearly state this on their site, and how to disable it before installing it....I've never, ever been partial to any "phoning home" functions in any OS, was the whole reason I left MSFT in the first place).

Thanks for replying Belham. CentOS 6.x is indeed good but Firefox in Stella won't load my web-based e-mail (I'm with Fastmail), so I have to use Seamonkey for that.

Neon looks interesting but I find KDE too demanding of system resources for an old computer like mine (I've had quite a few lockups with it especially when running Firefox), so when I'm running a KDE-based distro I tend to install something like XFce or IceWM and just use the KDE apps.

MX-15 simply wouldn't install in my machine but I might consider running it as a frugal install, which you can apparently do now from an option in the menu.

I removed Mint 18 from my HP desktop and installed Slackware64-14.2, both are great

Moksha - a release from cycle of rebirth forced by karma

#2430 Post by belham2 »

Bodhi Linux 3.2.1 64-bit, running on dual Dell monitors, spinning 5200rpm laptop 18 partitoned drive (governed by grub4dos), hardware consisting of a 8 yr old AMD Athlon Regor 2.8Ghz & 2GB of pc-6400 ram. A distro that is snappy, fun and intelligent.

Included two pics. One, is just a plain, beautiful Moshka DE & wallpaper, with subtle shaded bottom taskbar.

Second pic gives you a small idea of the Moshka Desktop enviroment (based on Enlightenment desktop). Some salient facts on Bodhi:

1) distro is ~570MB, it comes quite bare (you get midori, pcmanfm, terminal, ephoto, epad (text editor), Epulse (sound), eeData (updater), ARandR and the sublime Bodhi Applications Center)...so it's a bit sparse, but the tradeoff is you install what and only what you want...there's no trying to include everything & the Out house-sink mentality.

2) Besides the desktop (and themes provided---10 are available for download), Moksha stores gadgeta (for taskbar) and luanchers in "shelves". These shelves are fully gui customizable. You can have one shelf and/or many, located wherever you want, on whichever monitor(s) you want, withwhat you want included in them...all via a great GUI interface.

3) One of the treats of the Moksha DE is that the developers did something that should make all of us smile: they took something KDE-like, and made it their own. What? Full window placement, control, size, etc, etc. Result: you now have full--FULL--control over every window opened by Moksha in terms of monitor placement, size, screen location, etc, etc with just a simple right-click anywhere in the window you are opening and/or working in. It is fantastic. I hate when desktop managers have the "smart" feature yet still if you open a lot windows, none of them are ever remembered where you opened them and in what size. Not so with Bodhi. You modify a browser file manager, any pop-up notice window within the complete Moksha desktop, and that window will forever (if you set it the first time via an easy right-click) will forever open there and/or anywhere you drap it around, re-size and close it. Personally, this one thing alone was the major reason to use KDE desktop....but we all know the headaches & bloat KDE can bring. Here, it is alive & well not in a bloated KDE desktop envirnment, but in a fast, slick DE environment. I wish all puppy makers could somehow have this function incorporated in their distros so we could go giddy with the one thing that makes any user smile.

4) The next new thing (at least for me in trying different Linux distros) is the "Bodhi Applications Center" (for its distro repository). The BAC looks like a standalone app, like usual, but look closely at the pic. It is not. It is Midori (or it can be set for whatever browser you use). Opening the BAC takes you directly to the repository on the Bodhi website where you can install software they've packaged (look at the pic....again, Bodhi kept it sparse, there's only 90-100 packages, which for me basically covered everything like Libre, VLC, Geany, Chromum, Firefox, Synaptic, CUPS printer support, Evince, etc, etc, etc. Anything else you'd like, you just install it the regular terminal CLI way). What's also great about this, anything you choose to install, the full instructions on how to maximize that package are right there for the clicking. No hunting and searching..just click, and like a scientist, you've mastered it in a few secs because of the detailed instructions on that package.

5) Lastly, the included eepDater (the system maintenance updater) is one of the cleanest, tightest system updating applications I've seen across the Linux world. Fast, clear and concise. Next to Elementary OS's Loki updater (which has set the bar for excellence in what a system updater should do and look like), the eepDater is quite good.

If you're a Puppy lover, give Bodhi a spin, it's quite enlightening. In Hinduism and Jainism, the term "Moksha" refers to the release from the cycle of rebirth impelled by the law of karma. And, yes, read that once or twice, even a hundred times, I still go drink another beer and see if I understand this karma stuff any better...

P.S. I still struggle understanding how to get uploaded pics to Murga-Linux to display. Both pics uploaded (and accepted) to murga were under 200kb in size, under 800x600 resolution, but they still would not display (causing people to have to click on them). Wish I knew what I was doing wrong, as I just don't understand...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn' t. I will now try to upload the exact same pics to my pic site, and link them here, and see if that works. :?

I've just installed the latest version of PCLinuxOS (MATE edition). It's got a good but fairly conventional set of software - Firefox, LibreOffice, Thunderbird, VLC etc. - and works well on the whole except that sound levels on playing Youtube videos are unusually quiet even when adjusted through Alsamixer.

I suppose it's handy for first thing in the morning when you don't want to wake the neighbours though.
Gigabyte M68MT-52P motherboard, AMD Athlon II X4 630, 5.8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive running Ubuntu 16.04.6, MX-19.2, Peppermint 10, PCLinuxOS 20.02, LXLE 18.04.3, Pardus 19.2, exGENT 200119, Bionic Pup 8.0 and Xenial CE 7.5 XL.
