I use a T43P.
No problems so far. I might even try plugging my Kobo Arc book reader into it later being as Windows objects (though I think it is hardware since my Dell accesses it OK)

Further to our recent discussion about Debian - and Slack - derived distros, I've just booted up SolusOS 1.3 (the last stable version) for old time's sake and am left with a certain feeling of sadness; there was nothing at all not to like about it. It was smart in a conservative, Vistay sort of way and had a small but well-chosen set of apps. It deserved to do well.

Thanks for the suggestion, greengeek. Sorry not to have got back to you earlier, but I've been faffing about with family problems for the last week or so, and haven't got on here for a while.

It's the 'big' Compaq I'm talking about here.....Athlon 64 with 3GB RAM (so 320 MB doesn't bother me at all). The blank screen refers to the old Dell lappie; nothing to do with Skype specifically (the various 'Pups' I've tried just won't display ANYTHING after the initial Grub4DOS and bootup stuff).....I wouldn't even attempt to run Skype video calls on her, 'cos I don't think she'd handle the 'cam, never mind the calls.

I think mikeb's right about the Intel 82845 video chip.....they just threw the rulebook out the window when they built that thing..! I do find it VERY odd, though, that a 13-yr old lappie will ONLY run one of the newest Puppies...

If I can get sound working in Skype on the Compaq, I will be one HAPPY bunny. I'll give your download a try; will report back, and let you know what happens. I'm using PulseAudio (at least that's what Skype tells me on the Compaq, regardless of what distro I run on it).....which is the one that gives all the trouble, despite it being the one that MS are now SUPPOSEDLY supporting.

Cheers.

Mike. :)

Pulseaudio is now a Skype dependency since Micro Soft bought out skype.

I have no dog in this hunt as me and my nieces talk on "Hello Fireox" now anyways.

We also used to use Jitsi instead of Skype but they like Hello Firefox better.
On topic.

Tried a couple of new distros recently, which are mostly going well:

Pinguy 14.04, which is based on Ubuntu (14.04 naturally) and looks a lot crisper than Pinguy used to look (only thing is, I've not found out yet how to add or update software from the repository);

and Zenwalk 7.4, the latest version of a venerable old distro based on Slackware. It's pretty good except that I've had a problem with the text window in the version of Firefox (27.0) which comes with it.

Rocky; that AntiX screenshot does look good. AntiX is one of the best distros out there for older computers in particular.

I've also tried the latest version of Sabayon, but the minimal version, which I used, is exactly what it says - no graphical browsers at all in the live session, and I also couldn;t install it to hard drive because it wouldn't convert my free space to a usable partition (though I may try again with a preset partition).

I've not been impressed by the testing versions of Vector I've tried recently, but the latest version (RC 4.1) of 64-bit Vector, which has been named VLocity, seems pretty decent. I haven't found anything wrong with it, although it is quite spartan for a 2015 distro (no games, for example).

Evening, all.

Just discovered ChromePup; installed it less than an hour ago. I spent several fruitless days, a few months back before Xmas, trying to install ChromeOS, here on my big old Compaq PC. Simply refused to work. ChromePup, however, is perfect! Not only does it tick all the boxes, but it's based on a system that, despite having used for less than a year, I've already come to know well & love.

Full marks to whoever put this little gem together; this is a winner...and definitely a keeper!

Hi, roky (may I call you that?)...so much less formal! Been reading your blog post; verree interesting..! (Especially your guide to installing AntiX; I've been considering that one myself.)

Yes, that's the one...OBPrecise 14.07.26. A little beauty, I think. The only thing I've noticed in the last hour or so is that PepperFlash seems to have a tendency to crash without so much as a 'by your leave'.....I get a lot of those 'Aw, snap...' warnings; not sure what's going on, but I definitely need to dig a little deeper. I have jazz on RadioTunes going in the background almost continuously, and it's a real pain to have to keep refreshing the page..!

I've just upgraded the BIOS (with Keisha's help), in preparation for upgrading my Athlon 64 to an X2 dual-core; so it may have something to do with the settings in that. When it was first installed, everything was all over the place; fans running flat-out, wouldn't boot, wanted a password...you name it...s**t was happening. Finally got it reset to defaults by using the 'clear CMOS' jumpers on the mobo, and haven't dared touch it since..! She RUNS...

Not posting a pic, at the moment; as I said, I've only just installed it, and am nowhere near getting it the way I want it yet! Shall post one as soon as I do...

Incidentally (and I KEEP meaning to ask how this is done)...how do you get the extra buttons in the taskbar on the menu side? Doubtless SOMETHING needs editing, but what?

Mike.

Hi, roky (may I call you that?).
No problemo Mike. Everybody else calls me that. Even outside of the net.
Incidentally (and I KEEP meaning to ask how this is done)...how do you get the extra buttons in the taskbar on the menu side? Doubtless SOMETHING needs editing, but what?
If you mean the Icewm Window Manager Toolbar. I keep a backup in my pastebin account of ~/.icewm/toolbar .

But you are running Open Box Window Manager in what you call ChromePup (developer ETP calls it ChromeBook Pup V2) .

I am not openbox savvy per se when it comes to the toolbars you can use and configure in it. I have used wbar which works fine I bet in Open Box.

I think ETP wants you to go here

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=94954

For any info you need to tweak the Window Manager in ChromeBook Pup V2.

Other site I might recommend for this is

http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/adding_ ... her_distro

Good Luck with it and thanks for answering my question.

Hi Mike -

Your OBPrecise spin is (I believe) using the excellent, easily tweakable LXpanel. So -

Right-click an empty space on the panel/taskbar, choose "Add/Remove Panel Items" from the popup menu.

From the "Preferences" window's "Panel Applets" tab, click the "Add" button.

From the new "Add plugin to panel" window, scroll down and select "Application Launch Bar" - then hit the "Add" button... an empty (button) space should then appear on the panel's RH side.

Now, back in the Preferences' "Panel Applets" tab/window, highlight your newly-added "Application Launch Bar" and hit the "Edit" button to add your desired menu application choice(s).

The Up and Down buttons in the "Panel Applets" tab then allows you to move your new launch button to where you prefer on the panel.

You can later right-click the new button, choose "Application Launch Bar Settings" to add/remove more application buttons to/from the launcher.

Handy!

Hope that might be of some use... :)

Bob

Thanks for that, Bob; I'll give it a spin.

I used to run Lubuntu, a while back.....it, too, uses the LXpanel, as part of the LXDE desktop.....which I always liked. I ran a top task bar, and the bottom one was set up like a Cairo-style launcher (which you can set up quite easily with LXpanel).....and I also had it set to auto-hide.

Highly configurable, I think is the term. You've merely reminded me of just what you can do with it. My distro-hopping days are pretty well over; I've settled down with the 'Puppies', and my original distro, Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS 'Trusty Tahr'...

Cheers!

Yup! I love LXpanel/LXDE - light/fast/rock-solid, decent selection of panel plugins, easy to configure... and the auto-hide option indeed is extremely handy, especially set to pop-up (as a launcher) on top of open, maximized windows.

I'm curious to see where it goes as LXDE converts over from GTK to QT... hopefully they don't mess it all up!

Yep. I've just been using the latest release candidate of Sparky (4.0), which is based on Debian and has LXDE, which is excellent for older computers. (It also has a well-configured Conky, which gives the distro an attractive appearance despite its low resource use.)

Image

It's a very standard Debian distro in that it relies entirely on open-source software such as Iceweasel and LibreOffice and it's difficult to even download closed-source programs on it.
