OK,

Normal User sent me an email that sorted things out, so I've re-packaged moon-lander, & uploaded it here: moon-lander-1.0-1039.4-i486.pet.

@Geoffrey, you might want to edit your first post for this newest version.

Hi All
This is what I have done so far. I installed the SDL pet made by Geoffery. I tried it with my original install of moon-lander but it crashed as soon as it opened. I then went back to the original SDL provided by muggins and as I saw that the repackaged version of moon-lander had been uploaded I downloaded and installed it. The new moon-lander does the same thing as I outlined in an earlier post in that it crashes a few seconds after I start to play. I have now got the .moon_lander file containing the 311112 you mentioned. I have attached the output from running in a terminal. I wondered if this suggest a problem with the SDL package I installed but as it seems to work for others it seemed unlikely.

Code:
# moon-lander
Sound active
reading game options in /root/.moon_lander
Opened audio at 22050 Hz 16 bit stereoscreen initialized
Loaded font "/usr/share/moon-lander/fonts/ConsoleFont.bmp". Width:6, Height:13
Loaded font "/usr/share/moon-lander/fonts/LargeFont.bmp". Width:16, Height:18
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

Thanks again for all your help.

Regards,

Ken.

Ken,

I'm note sure what's causing your probs...I have had the SDL parachute error before, but I can't recall how I solved it.

If you enter cat /etc/puppyversion is the response 520?

Also, are you using the latest upload, from Geoffrey's first post?

Lastly, to ensure that whichever SDL you're using is OK, have you tried running any other SDL based games? e.g. you could try some of the following:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=31342 SDL scavenger
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=19406 lmarbles

HI Muggins

Her is the output from the terminal in terms of the version of puppy I am using which looks OK.

Code:
# cat /etc/puppyversion
520#

I am using the latest upload of moon-lander, however, I will uninstall, re-download and re-install to see if that helps. I have downloaded and installed SDL Scavenger from your link http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=31342 and this one seems to work OK although I am not entirely sure how to play it. I am now at a loss as to why moon-lander wont play other than my hardware not being up to it. I am using a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200, PIII 800MHz, 320MB ram. Is this enough?

Regards,

Ken.

Hi Ken,

It has me beat as to what the problem might be, I just ran moon-land from the terminal to see what it was doing

I was shocked to see all the errors with the sound, but it still works Confused

It must be running on a wing and a prayer Laughing
Code:
moon-lander
Sound active

Yes, I get similar errors. At first I suspected it was due to me replacing the original .wav files, with .oggs, to reduce size of .pet, but re-compiling with the original .wav gives the same errors. Also, I tried a debian package, with the .wav files, and it also gives alsa errors.

I might have a look at other sdl programs, and compare how they're using sound.

Hi Geoffery and Muggins

I am sorry to have caused you so much trouble with this. Oddly enough I do not get any sound errors and the sound does seem to work. I tried starting the game then pressing "A" for autopilot. The first time I tried this the program ran and on landing I got "........ the eagle has landed" message. The second time the game again crashed before landing . Oh well I suppose it did prove the sound was definitely working.

Thanks again,

Ken.

I just tried playing sound with aplay, it looks to be broken as I get the same error messages, so I don't think moon lander is the problem.

This install of quirky I'm using is massive with lots of changes, more than likely something I've done that has caused the problem.

will have to try moon lander with a clean install when I find the time.

Geoffrey

edit: I tried it on my usb backup of Quirky, runs fine no errors.
