sc0ttman's "Akita" is a Wary x Puppy421 hybrid cross (http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67811). Maybe if you find Akita12 working in your most recent box, it might give you clues on solving your hardware limbo?

3.x was slackware based, 4.x went to T2. 4.2 was a community edition that did include tcl/tk + gnocl. Pupngo and Akita are mostly 4.x based with 2 very different vectors in the lightweight direction.

Wasn't 3.x technically just slackware compatible (It was still puppy)?
4.x did go to T2 from what I remember though, and then 5.x is Puppy built with Woof on Puppy (Puppies all the way down )
And for puppyt, Akita sounds like that could be a very good puplet for folks who like 412 but have newer hardware.

Thanks for your suggestions guys
puppyluvr
I will give your solution a try after I have exhausted all attempts at a HD install. I've nothing against a 'frugal' install it's just that I prefer a HD install.

Yeah, my old PC dying was a Toyota moment . . . bugger. Extremely apt in my case. Good ad, funny.
NeroVance
Here is what I have done/tried so far.
On booting the live CD (Puppy412 and same from Puppy431) from the PC's DVD/CD drive I get the following error message:
Code: | Loading kernel drivers needed to access disk drives... done
Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives... pup_412.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial-ramdisk console...
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
# |
From what I observe, all goes well until the above error mesasage then the CD drive stops turning and no activity from the CD read/write indicator light. From this I conclude that the boot process stops because it is unable to see the CD drive. Although Wary512 boots normally with the CD turning and activity from the CD read/write light.
From what very little knowledge I have, could it be something from the init script.
I have tried the following boot parameters with no effect:
Code: |
pmedia=satacd
acpi=off
pci=routeirq
pmedia=satacd
|
Copied the contents of the live CD to sda2 and booted with
Code: | puppy pdev=sda2, pmedia=satacd |
Tried sc0ttman's "Akita-12" and got the same error as above. I am now at a loss on what to do next. All suggestions welcome.
Update
I have found a solution of sorts. Installed Puppy-412 on to a usb memory stick, plug into PC. Switch on PC. Enter BIOS at startup, select 'Puppy on a stick' from available media shown in BIOS. HOORAY, Puppy-412 boots on my new box and seems to run ok, except for . . ..
But, yeah there's always a but. Internal HD or DVD/CD does not show on the desktop and using pmount fails to see them, although plugging in my 500GB external usb drive shows as does other memory sticks. So all is not lost as expexted.
Another bummer is that I seem to not be able to connect to the internet, which is not the end of the world as I will only be using 'Puppy-412 on a stick' for testing pets. This should be enough for me to keep 412collection going as I still think it is useful and so long as the web stats keep showing this to be the case.

hi tuxtoo,
It seems odd that your internal drives are not being detected. What is your output when you run
at the terminal? I would think that the kernel in 4.1.2 should have support for the newer SATA drives.

hi monsie
Thanks for replying. I have done as you suggest and the output in the terminal is-
Code: | /dev/sda|Direct-Access|USB BAR |
Which means absolutely nothing to me
Edit
I should say that the HD is 500gb has a 4gb swap partition (same amount of RAM) and three equal partitions formatted as ext3.
Using 'wellminded linux' to search the above terminal output I found two other commands to try-
outputs the following
Code: | /dev/sda | ext3 | 253920 |
ouputs the following
Code: | Usage: disktype <device/file> . . . |
I don't know if this gives any clues.

Hello,
This drive wasnt ever a Win Vista drive was it?
Check the bios and see if it shows as IDE/SATA,
Vista machines had some other label, like AHCI or something,, but made the drive basically invisible...
You can change it in the bios,

tuxtoo,
It looks like only your usb drive is being detected Puppy 4 came out with a new method of hardware detection that was encapsulated in pup_event and it was supposed to include lots of improvements. However, there were some issues with the kernel around this time...
Are you perchance running Puppy 4.1.2 retro version with the 2.6.21 kernel? Apparently, this kernel has a reputation of spotty detection of internal drives --I noticed that Barry K commented about this in a line when he edited Probedisk2 which is currently used in Puppy. Also, I found this thread over here which may be of interest to you. If you are indeed running the retro version, I suggest trying the regular version with the 2.6.25 kernel.
That said, you might have to accept that Puppy 4.1.2 will work best on an older system... one with drives that use the traditional ide connection. You may have to look around for a used system, but even then, it might be fairly easy to find a desktop with decent performance that is about five to six years old...
In the meantime, use Wary, Racy, or one of the newer puppies... but I will add my two cents here and recommend that you keep your Puppy 412 website going. You've designed a very attractive site, and have put together some really great packages including OpenOffice, so it would be a shame to see it go to waste. Actually, I don't think it would be a waste because I believe there are plenty of Puppy users out there like myself who find a lot of value in Puppy when they are able to keep an older computer running well.
hth,
Monsie

First of all, thanks for all your help and advice guys.
puppyluvr
If you don't mind I will take you up on your offer to-
Quote: | I also have MANY pets compiled for, and on, 4.12.
I can post them to my meownplanet link if you like. |
and I will mirror them on 412collection. As for the HD, it was formatted to NTFS when I got it but I formatted it to ext3 and it is set to IDE in the BIOS so I can only have access to Puppy-412 from a usb drive.
monsie
I am running Puppy-412 with the 2.6.25 kernel and I tried the solution you linked to in your post to no avail. It looks like you are on the ball with Puppy-412 detecting only the usb drives, but as I said, I can still boot Puppy-412 from a usb drive for testing purposes. So I will definitely be able to keep 412collection up and running and thanks for your comments on 412collection, it's nice when people appreciate it. Although 412collection has been neglected in the last week or so due to my PC problems .
I am currently using Wary-512, HD install with no problems. So at least I have my favourite OS on my new box. I could get a hold of an older PC to run Puppy-412 but I just don't have the space to set up a second desktop PC, much as I would like to.

Hi Tuxtoo,
this is a great idea. I really enjoy giving the older puppies a spin - it is amazing how many of them still work perfectly well on really cheap hardware (or even lightning quick on newer hardware).
I have a couple of questions:
1) I see you have softmaker office2008 on the website - have you found a way to get it to read docx files on 4.1.2?
2) I didn't find a link to a 4.1.2 iso on the website (maybe I just missed it...). Would it be appropriate to have a link to the iso? cheers!

@ greengeek - I think TextMaker2008 didn't actually have the docx capabilities that are claimed. I was impressed enough anyway to buy the SoftMaker Office 2010 and 2012 - handles whatever shenanighans M$ Office can serve up.
The AbiWord that prit and runtt21 had going in MacPup520 (and later) has impressive docx handling, from what I tested. Could it be reverse-engineered into a 412 environment maybe?

hi greengeek
Like Puppyt says I don't think SMO2008 has the ability to open docx files. Although, from what I see on the forum Abiword 2.6.4 has this ability. There is an online converter http://www.docx2doc.com/.
You are correct about the lack of a link to the main Puppy-412 iso and I will include one. I will, in the next 3 or 4 days be making more 412 based puplets available; Photo Artist worshop iso (P.A.W). webserverpuppy1.iso with Hiawatha and webserverpuppyx1.iso with Apache web server for those who are interested in web development.
I was going to include Cybercafe iso but it is based on 421 and not 412 as I first though. It's just that I want to keep the iso's available to be based on 412 as in this web sites moniker.

Drive problem [SOLVED] |
|
I have managed to solve the problem with Puppy-412 not detecting the HD or DVD/CD drive on my new box. The problem lay with the new style UEFI BIOS. In the 'Advanced' section of the BIOS there is a menu called 'SATA configuration' selecting this and then from the sub-menu select 'SATA mode selection' with three selections; IDE (the default), AHCI and disabled.
Changing the 'SATA mode selection' from IDE to AHCI solved the problem and I now have access as normal on Puppy-412 to the HD and DVD/CD drive. Sorted!
This may help Puppy Users who want to run older versions of Puppy on newer hardware with the newer style UEFI BIOS.
