Firefox 5.0 b2

#1 Post by playdayz »

I was very surprised to see Firefox 5.0 b2. It was so recently that 4.0 and 4.0.1 were released. One can only assume some problem, but FF 4 was working fine for me. I read one mention of "the FF 4 debacle" but I thought that was hyperbole. (Maybe if you are going to have 12 betas you need to get started ;-) )

Anyway, Firefox 5.0 b2 -> http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -Lucid.pet

This should work in many Puppies besides Lucid--anything that can run FF4 I guess.

And, wait a minute.... Firefox 5.0b2 just scored 34% better on the peacekeeper benchmark than Firefox 4.0 did--in the same pet format!!!

Raw scores : FF4 = 3400 FF5 = 4560

<Add> I compiled 5.0b2 for my amdfam10 (using -march=native) and got the result of 4843--about a 6% improvement. Here are some instructions

New release cycle

They're switching to about a 4-month release cycle, as I recall.

@ playdayz

With the beta builds, do they update themselves in the same way as the stable builds, or do you need to download/install each update?

Thanks for the pet file :)

I *think* they will update themselves as usual. My windows Firefox even automatically updated from 4.0.1 to 5.0b2! It asked me first ;-)

I am mainly using a Firefox (Aurora) 5.0b2 that I compiled myself for that last little bit of ultimate performance ;-) and that shouldn't update itself.
