Barry Just made a new release of Dpup based on "squeeze". I did ask him if he could update Dpup about a week ago and well he did, Barry did an Excellent Release on this version. Sure a few things need updating/fixing but I'm willing to support it :)

Release info is found at http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02292
iso --> http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/test/s ... 4.99.2.iso
Devx --> http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/test/s ... 4.99.2.sfs
Extra SCSI and the big analog modem --> http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/test/s ... 4.99.2.sfs

MD5SUM's

Known issues, no ffmpeg, so basically no mediaplayer as of yet, and zigbert mentioned
"Pburn and Pmusic won't work properly without ffmpeg. Also Ptiming and Pclock will suffer a bit".
But I'll compile it today. and it should be fixed asap.

Hello ttuuxxx - tested Barry's squeezed puppy today but am unable to run through the xorgwizard to get to the desktop just drops me back to prompt - have to use the xvesa? setting - some one else in chat also had this same problem.
I remade squeeze puppy in woof as is and also with pemasu's updated 2.6.38.4 kernel with the same xorgwizard result.

Any thing i need to try/test/report/upload let me know.
cheers.

I did a frugal install of the new dpup squeeze.
Thu 19 May 2011 Operating System: Squeezed Puppy-4.99.2 Linux 2.6.32
0.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C77 [GeForce 8200] (rev a2)
oem: NVIDIA product: MCP77 Board - mcp78pvo Chip Rev

X Server: Xorg Driver: nvidia
X.Org version: 1.7.7
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (524x292 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

Athlon(tm) Dual Core Processor 4850e
Core 0: 2499 1: 2499 MHz

...the above also recorded at '/tmp/root/report-video-glx'.
I installed the proprietary Nvidia driver and have hardware
acceleration,no glxgear though.
I haven't done much else other than add a few pets that I made for
dpup 485 and they work fine, changed the wallpaper too.
Added firefox 4.0.1 too.

Hi stu90 its the Vesa driver your using right not XVesa, They are 2 different things, Vesa is a driver for Xorg, and Xvesa is its own video display, that doesn't use xorg.
My video card in this pc is made by Nvidia, when I run the wizard it uses the nouveau driver, which also drops me to prompt, the nouveau driver in the past has been buggy like this on my pc, It should use either nv or vesa.
I'll delete the nouveau driver and then see if it takes the nv driver.

Hi Stu,

I removed the nouveau_drv.so and it probed and loaded fbdev, so I laughed and tested it and of course it dropped to prompt again, so then I selected nv from the selection where it said "Choose" and boom it worked :)
Driver "nv" #card0driver
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "G86 [GeForce 8500 GT]"
BusID "PCI:2:0:0"

nouveau driver

This thing should be removed, unless there is a better version.
It has never worked for me with any computer or operating system.

NV driver seems to work for my Nvidia graphic cards.
ATI- Your stuck with Vesa driver, but it always works.

Hi stu90 & bigpup if you remove
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fbdev_drv.so
and
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nouveau_drv.so
then run the xorgwizard it will find and load the NV driver and actually take you to the desktop :)
Really the fbdev_drv.so is a waste of space also since directFB is also included in Dpup it just doubles up the FB libs anyways since Directfb supersedes fbdev_drv.so lib.

wow just noticed a new lib that takes 2300kb expanded its called libmathview, basically it a lib so that a plugin is made in abiword for latex. Ummm I think I could live without latex in abiword, should be a repo item, really with 2300 kb saving, I could include all my favorite apps like gcalctool, and ditch the calculators, htop, transmission, lxtasx

I test it now to see if it treat my Acer D250 as the Lupu puppies does.

There is a really good writeup on your Video at this archlinux page, about 1/2 down this page you'll find the info on it.

This Squeeze Dpup is kind of very different from Wary or Quirky or Lupu or ...

It does show the Desktop but first time it told me it failed something on the ntfs so it set it as read only.

Looking at pictures and seeing music video clips are not working as expected.

Seamoneky works good though. It gave me LAN connection straight away so that is good.

What else should I test? oops it is 10.43 PM so I got to bed now soon

In Squeeze and Knoppix nouveau works better for me than nVidia's proprietary driver.

Frugal install to acer revo nettop.
I got to the desktop after choosing the nv driver.

Thu 19 May 2011 Operating System: Squeezed Puppy-4.99.2 Linux 2.6.32
0.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation ION VGA (rev b1)
oem: NVIDIA product: MCP79 Board - hornet-0 Chip Rev

X Server: Xorg Driver: nv
X.Org version: 1.7.7
dimensions: 1440x900 pixels (380x238 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330
Core 0: 1600 1: 1600 2: 1600 3: 1600 MHz

...the above also recorded at '/tmp/root/report-video-glx'.

This pc has an ION graphics chip so I downloaded the
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.41.06.run driver and installed that.

Installing that removed the nv driver, hardware acceleration is
working now.

I wonder if the problem with xorgwizard and the nouveau driver is that when "xorg -configure" is run (it's needed to create /etc/X11/xorg.conf) there is an option for nouveau that that includes the "%" (percent) char. Barry has code in xorgwizard that converts all "%" chars to a new line (\n). So, what happens is there ends up a syntax error in the xorg.conf.

A simple workaround is to edit the xorg.conf in mp after you get dumped at the prompt.

Code: Select all

mp /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Look for a stray " (double quote) , it will be on a line on it's own in the driver section. It should be on the previous line with the "%" char.. (you'll see the"percentage" entry there). Fix that and run xwin, away you go.

It's all well and good to say nouveau is buggy but it has improved substantially over the last 12 months. I can get decent hardware acceleration with it now.

_______________________________________________________

EDIT:.. I just tried dpup and the above is not the problem. The nouveau kernel module is not included, so nouveau may as well be ditched as this is needed for nouveau to load.

good Idea mick, I was looking for the missing " but couldn't find it, That explains it well.

Cannot setup Xorg. Boot and enter X-mode with Xvesa
sqeeze use CUPS 1.4. But I can't enter web-Interface to add printer with username="root" and "password="woofwoof".
Connect to Internet with USB 3G Huawei 173Eu -> Good (I'd posted this message to forum)

I feel very unsure about this. How do I know he just not set it up like that so I expect too much.

It failed on my gear to play any music video clip from youtube. While his Wary play almost all and most other puppies does too.

Maybe he wants me to dl the needed music player? So I have no idea.

Picture viewing was different too. one could not use + or - to change the size of the picture.
