Du to me being really dumb, test coding directly on the repo,
I have lost various files in the Akita repo, some of which I really wanna keep handy, but don't have local copies ...

Here are the list of**MOST** missing PETs, which I REALLY want to get a hold of and re-upload to akita repo!!!

(I've yet to track down the others that were lost!!)

...Any other packages that are found missing,
let me know and PLEASE upload a backup copy somewhere for me to get...

That's amazing, thanks!! :D .. Downloading now... and uploading to repo.. VERY useful. ;)

I'm pretty sure I (will) have everything back now, although some pets seem to differ in size a little from other copies I have around.. will have to double check these, and then I am done.. :D

(I will then back up the akita repo to archive.org or somewhere!
..and make sure to keep a safe, complete local copy of the repo too!)

THANKS EVERYONE!! YOU'RE STARS!! :D :D

------------------

On a side note, during this time, I have fixed and simplified the samba setup, and added gnetconnect, all of which will now operate out of the '/root/network-shares' folder, which is where all your network shares/ftp connections/and so on will be available once setup.

..also, cos I have Akeeeta-15.2 running very nicely on my EeePC, I will update VLC-GTK to support video capture from webcam/v4l devices, which is half finished already, so should be easy...

...and I've updated a few things in Pkg, which is now at version 1.0. Essentially, Pkg now accepts input from stdin, with a dash (-) as the final option :

Code: Select all

echo "$PKG_LIST" | pkg -g -
There are some other improvements I wanna make to Pkg before I release 1.0:

- add dependency checking for deps of PKG as well, at PKG install time..
- also then ldd all the bins+libs after install..
- use pkg aliases, as used in woof
- must update pkgdialog as well

When I have a good 1.0, I may re-jig it and release a version of Pkg compatible with woof-built-puppies ..

Plus I am still gonna have to few things in the repo (dbus-glib-1.00 messes up installing a few things, like firefox!)..

Any requests or ideas are welcome, I'll see what I can do..

I checked to make sure that copy-fast will work in Akita Distro

Also I recommend that you upgrade to Extract-pet that I made

Gpkgdialog

#966 Post by sc0ttman »

Thanks don, I'll add those to the next akita.

------------------------

The next akita will have a new package manager,

It will be replacing petget in many areas: Gpkgdialog, a new frontend for Pkg.

Pkg (cli tool) has the following features:
  • - download, install and uninstall, compile, convert and combine packages
    - supports multiple package filetypes,: pet, sfs, deb, txz, etc
    - recursive dependency checking
    - supports packages aliases: search for dirac will return libschroedinger, etc
    - auto find packages based on partial file names
    - switch between repos, add repos, etc
    - each repo will fall back to list of other repos, in a specific order, if no pkg matches
    - search pkg names, descriptions, deps and categories
    - search for packages in current repo or all repos at once, in fallback order
    - search for dependencies in current repo or all repos at once, in fallback order
    - enable bleeding edge search to get latest pkg versions from any repo, - ignores the fallback list
    - many more
Gpkgdialog has the following features:
  • - graphical interface for Pkg, based on gtkdialog
    - all of the above features in Pkg also in Gpkgdialog
    - multiple options each time you click on a package in the list
    - search relevant repos for deps when installing local packages (optional)
    - build a 'queue', then choose 'process queue' to perform many operations at once
    - detect local packages installed or not, show appropriate options
    - saves log files for every package install, uninstall, etc to /tmp/gpkgdialog/
search akita repo for gimp:
Image

search all repos for gimp:
Image

install package options:
Image

uninstall package options:
Image

build from source options:
Image

show installed pkgs from all repos (can also limit to current repo only):
Image

install local pet options:
Image

get deps of local pet packages, if found in any supported repo
Image

a few settings you can choose:

Downloading Akita 15 now... sorry I haven't kept up with it! Just curious, what is the latest version of Chrome known to work with Akita?

EDIT: also, sc0ttman, do I recall correctly that I sent you a PM a while back...? ;)

Just booted Akita on the hardware I had in mind... a Neoware CA19 thin client with some modifications (extra USB, no parallel port, and a real hard drive; I'm working on improving its cooling system next).

Basic specs --

400MHz (!) VIA Eden CPU (and therefore the chipset and graphics and audio and everything are all VIA as well)
VIA CN700 Chipset (incl graphics -- ThinSlacko uses the openchrome driver)
1gig RAM
8gb "Microdrive" (CompactFlash size mechanical HDD) [hoping to upgrade this to a 16gig CompactFlash card soon)

Upon bootup I noticed a very odd effect that I've never seen before, a sorta fisheye thing. This only lasted until X kicked in... seems to be a text mode thing. Dunno what's up with it.

This is with an eMachines eView 17f2 monitor -- that is to say, a gigantic flatscreen CRT that weighs more than a mid-Sixties VW Bus ;) seriously, this thing could be used by Carnival for a cruise ship anchor...

I've attached a screenshot of the weirdness... blur is me and the camera -- screen is as sharp as good cheddar :P (that is to say, quite sharp)

Actually, sc0ttman -- don't worry about that fisheye thing unless you have to -- Akita's a little too slow on that system to really suit me. Nothing personal -- just me being picky is all :P

I'm gonna look at other small Pups... sorry to bother you.

openssh, git, dynamic dns

#971 Post by sc0ttman »

Just a quick update:

I have been using SSH, Git etc to make my Akita install into a server,
serving blogs, wikis, source code repos and so on to the interwebz.. tested as working from other peoples houses..

So that other Akita users can do the same, I added these packages to the Akita repo:

- git-1.8.4-i486.pet: source code manager, Development 8.7M

- git_DOC-1.8.4-i486.pet: source code manager, docs, development +git 15K

- cgit-0.9.2-i486-akita.pet: website interface for Git, Development +git 372K

The three .PET packages above need the akita devx to be installed.

I also added these .PETs as well:

- noip-2.1.9-1-i486.pet: No-IP.org dynamic DNS updater, Network 17K

- openssh-server-5.1p1.pet: SSH server and daemon, Network 206K

I have modified each of them to provide graphical dialogs during installation, so users can easily choose and see the settings needed, etc.
The packages should work out of the box, but if a user needs to make changes, the GUIs that popup during install should explain how to do it.

So, using the .PETS above, Akita users can now (quite) easily run (an updated, better) Git, and accept SSH logins.
But even better, they can now also host their own Git repos and provide a nice website manager for them at http://localhost/git/

Working great on a Toshiba Tecra M5

#972 Post by LoboGrande »

I'm currently running Akita 15-1 off of a 32gb Sandisk USB stick with a '06-07 era Tecra M5 that I picked up dirt cheap. It has 2gb DDR2 RAM and a Core Duo T5500 1.66ghz CPU listed as Xeon processor under HardInfo . It seems slightly snappier than Precise Puppy 5.7.1 which I've installed on the hard drive.

Is there any way to see both cores under Akita? Should I be using another CPU Frequency Stepping driver other than p4 clockmod?

I'd also like to get the VGA output to work. It does it automatically under Precise but no luck so far under Akita. I'm new to laptops and netbooks so any suggestion would be appreciated.

Easytether Lite for Android successfully connected

#973 Post by LoboGrande »

In preparation for a long planned vacation, I've been trying to get my netbook and laptop running Precise, Akeeta 15and Akita 15 connected to my Android phone. I use EasyTether Lite on an LG45C Android 2.3 phone. I'm going to a fairly remote area that has no land line but does have a 3G connection.

You download the Ubuntu drivers(what I've tested) here:

http://www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/drivers.html and then convert to a .pet file.

You'll need to install the libusb-1.0.9-i486_v2.pet file from the Akita repository to get it to work.

Follow the instructions on Easytether Lite's USB Settings on your phone for connecting to the phone and you should have no problems.

You'll have to open a terminal on your computer and type in 'easytether connect' to connect to the network.

To get 2 cores, i've literally no idea!! a different kernel I guess...

To get VGA working (I presume you mean to output to another screen, like a TV, etc), you could try installing the following pet:

xorg75_upgrade_nokms .... (Damn! can't remember exactly which one...)

You need the wary Xorg pet that I used in Akeeeta to update Xorg.. It was suggested to me by partsman, he also used it in his most recent newer kernel build of Akita ... It's the Xorg 7.3 DRI update I think..

....*maybe* it's this one: zzx_upgrade_73_to_75_nokms-201101-1.pet (partsman will know)

EDIT: Also, thanks for the easy_tether tip.. I'm gonna add it the repo soon, and add a little help gui to popup when its installed.. maybe you can test it once it's done.. ?

Hello sc0ttman
Sorry I have not been in touch a lot lately been very busy family stuff, work, etc. I have been monitoring the Akita thread from work as much as I can !
@ LoboGrande
The pet sc0ttman suggested is the correct one ! but it only works on the kernel that I am using ! that's what you need to do to have both cpu's !
when I get home tonight I will gladly provide an iso file for it if sc0ttman doent mind ! so please check back as I hope you will come to love Akita as much as I have
@ sc0ttman I have been working on ext4 just been busy will report soon

i think it works on any kernel, within reason... i used that same pet (i think!) in akeeeta.. and no rush on the ext4 thing... i'll get akita 16 out , and then we'll try for 17..

Easytether .Pet works

#977 Post by LoboGrande »

I tested the Easytether driver pet on another older Akita thumbdrive and it's working right now as I type this. You still need to hit the Akita repo for the libusb-1.0.9_v2 .pet file to get to work correctly.

One more thing I forgot to add. Is that I set up the network connect using Dougal's Network Wizard. It show's up as Easytether USB. Just click on the appropriate connection and then when it says you've got a live network connection, hit the Auto DHCP and your connected to the internet via your Android phone.

for old clunkers, craptops, etc

#978 Post by L18L »

Hello sc0ttman,

Yes I know, akita is made "for old clunkers, craptops, etc"
but I could not resist the temptation to try your Akita Linux, Beta 15 on my new board.

One Issue: ps/2 mouse in ps/2-usb adaptor is not working (there is no ps/2 at this board) and without mouse no work possible.

Thus I suggest to put a hint at download page
"ps/2 or seriell mouse required"
"ps/2 or seriell keyboard required"

My regards

Are you saying your USB mouse and keyboard don't work? If so, I use USB kb+mouse with akita... I also have used a ps2 to usb adapter many times... can you not switch input, check boot/error logs etc?

I have old style ps/2 keyboard and mouse.
On other OSs I use them with ps2tousb adapter.

Everything before the adapter is not detected by akita.
I can (and did) plug directly keyboard.which is working.
But mouse in adapter is not working.
..and shortcut for menu also not working
thus I cold not produce scrrenshot and not check boot/error

akita is looking very nice. :)
