nope, there is an extensive set of posts related to performance of LANG=C vs utf8 on Barry's blog... I can also tell you that busybox ash is faster than bash 3.2.x which is much faster than 4.x.x

sh _should_ be a link to busybox NOT bash - if it breaks a script, the the script is defective and the #!/bin/sh should be changed to #!/bin/bash

to make performance even faster, you can take precaution to make all /bin/sh scripts compatible with busybox builtins (for ex. busybox wget only supports the most common options and stat only recognizes short options) and build busybox with "standalone shell" and "exec prefers applets"
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.

I agree, if your going to use busybox, then use it! This gives me something to play with at least. This is my first use of a Linux system that utilizes an overlay file system, which is cool for making easy to deploy modified versions.

It feels good to play with a simple Linux like this again.

Unlike other Puppies, Akita runs 'xwin', 'delayedrun', 'pup_event_frontend_d' and many other background processes using ash instead of bash.. I made those changes long ago... removed the bashisms from those scripts, and others.. It also uses the static 'init' binary in place of the traditional puppy shell script.. At one point I had it setup to use less RAM than TurboPup, just by reducing the number of processes running, removing wallpaper, etc ;)

That explains why I immediately noticed that Akita felt much faster. Since you already did the bash tweaks, I'll focus on recompiling the kernel for the wlan module my notebook needs. Then I can really try it out.

Is there any compelling reason to stick with squashs3 vs 4?

other than the SFS files in the repo all being sfs3, no ... If you are happy to wait a little while for them to be converted to sfs4 before you load/install them, then it should be fine.. (the converting is done automatically, and akita has an updated/custom Edit-SFS app, so sfs files can be more easily converted with the right click options..)

42 Music Apps in Akita Repo..

#921 Post by sc0ttman »

Click the 'Update' button in the Akita Package Manager to update the list of packages.. Or run the following in the terminal:

Code: Select all

pkg --update-repo
I've compiled & added loads of audio, MIDI, jack, wav, and lightweight music making software to the Akita repo, plus all their deps.. The total size of all of these is about 120mb, so I hope something is of use in here...

Worthy of note are the following: ecasound, sox, bristol, non-daw, fluidsynth, jack. nted, sunvox, soundtouch, linuxsampler, schismtracker, skale, loopdub and more..

NOTE: Many of these pets might work in any recent pup, if all their dependencies are installed.

Full list, with descriptions, filesizes and deps below..

I don't think so, it was taken from another puppy ages ago, I think.. Can't remember to be honest! Does LADSPA stuff need to be installed for the package to work once it has been compiled? I dont want to include LADSPA in akita by default, but if the ladspa-supporting mhwaveedit can also run fine without it, then i'll re-compile it.. maybe.. if I dont forget..

Compiling mhwaveedit for ladspa support doesn't add any more
size to the application. You should strip mhwaveedit after compiling
to slim down the application. The header file I provide must be
installed at the time of compiling to 'fool' the compiler, but
isn't needed otherwise.

It's easy to test mhwaveedit to see if it was compiled for ladspa plugins.
Just install some plugins and then launch mhwaveedit. If the
effects menu shows the new effects then you have succeeded.

Don't compile mhwaveedit 1.4.22 ----> it's too buggy.

Pkg and Pkgdialog

#927 Post by sc0ttman »

Akita 15 is coming not too far away, nothing major...
But here's something to play with before Akita 15...

Pkgdialog: frontend for Pkg cli package manager

Pkg+Pkgdialog should work in any pup, if using the akita repo :)
Note, Pkgdialog is simple, it only covers a few options of Pkg.

The frontend is called Pkgdialog and is very much unfinished, but the basics
works fine - install, uninstall, compile, search, delete, combine pkgs, etc...

main menu
Image

package search results
Image

install/uninstall confirmation
Image

choose a package for conversion
Image

choose the final package format
Image

You could also change /usr/sbin/pkgdialog... make $DIALOG=Xdialog, to make it look like this:

EDIT:: I re-uploaded a slightly less buggy Pkgdialog.. 3 people need to re-download ;)

Pkgdialog: frontend for Pkg cli package manager

I just tried tried it out for a bit. Yes, a lot of functions are still buggy, but the build files from source option works great. Well done, Sc0ttman! :D

EDIT:: Forgot to say, nice to see you back Tman.. Hope things are well..

Pkg itself works fine in Akita for me, I use it all the time.. The dialog frontend still needs a fair bit of work though!!

I re-uploaded a fixed version (in my previous post):

- fixed updating pkgs
- fixed searching for packages
- fixed finding deps
- fixed menu navigation
- fixed re-clean the lists
- other fixes in Pkg unrelated to Pkgdialog

Thanks partsman, Pkg works well for me at least and it's much much faster than using the standard PPM.. I know it could be made faster as well... by a better coder! :D

You only need the devx installed to compile (build) stuff, but Pkg will print an error about this if it's not present.

I've made many changes and improvements to Pkg in the last few days, including the ability to install/uninstall/delete/search for/etc many pkgs at once, just encase the pkgs in double quotes:

Code: Select all

pkg -g "firefox mplayer tixati"
The above command will install all 3 of those pkgs in one go, plus all their deps...

Code: Select all

pkg -s "office printing"
The above command will search pkg names, descriptions, categories, etc, and show any pkgs that match either 'office' or 'printing'..

So before releasing Akita 15, I plan to change Pkgdialog so that the list of packages is a checklist - cos then users will be able to choose multiple packages to install/download/delete/etc in one go, using both Pkg and Pkgdialog...

Also, because I have so nicely (IMHO) integrated SFS-Installer, Pkg, Buildpet and Pkgdialog, I was thinking about allowing Akita users to automatically upload the compiled and combined pets and sfs packages they build with Pkg, to a 'contrib' akita repo... But I already compiled, combined and uploaded most of them myself, so didn't bother...

It's all relative! Almost everything I ever made was done with a little or a lot of help on these forums!!
And my early work was plain crap.. And as I say, it's all relative - many would say my work is still crap ;)

But glad you like it, hope to have a new one out in a week or less...

Also sc0ttman
I have made an Akita Kernel 2.6.25.16 smp to support my dual core while keeping same kernel version ! looks like only diff is have to use smp ver kernel source to make modules ! however I have no sound and no Broadcom sta wireless driver ! using a usb wifi device for now
but gonna try to get sound fixed first ! any insight would be appreciated ! I will let you know how it goes ! also if you have any ideas as to why build will not open in pkgdialog :? I would be glad to help as always
thanks sc0ttman ! :D
