I just tried the same it worked OK... Which filesystem is /mnt/home using?

fat32 on a usb hard drive
Could be my an error on my part, I will re-check what I am doing.

I don't think you can symlink on fat32, it must be ext2, ext3, etc...

have just posted a new video on akita beta 9

nice.

Nice, thanks for the loverly video... Sorry about the persistent 'wanna keep this pet?' dialog, planned all along to make a settings checkbox thing, to either do it automatically or not... got lazy... will make that change for the next one...

I'll update the 'full' icon set template, so that doc2txt no longer loads up from the ROX desktop 'Write' icon - as you get that 'No file given' msg, as you know...

You should check out the doc2txt, docx2txt, doc2html, etc - use ROX right clicks...

Abiword is listed under 'Compose', you missed it Wink
You can use 'Defaults-Chooser' to make Abiword the defaultwordprocessor...

It needs lots of deps, cos Akita doesn't have goffice at all...
Why have goffice when so many use OpenOffice?

I think I can get away with removing even more deps from the abiword PPM listing though...

The Akita repo has openoffice 2 and 3, libreoffice 3.4.3, plus ooolite-unofficial (only 57mb!!) and also softmakeroffice (13mb) - all of which are much better than abiword.... IMHO

Anyway, thanks for the video Smile

scottman - I've installed A9 to the hard drive of my Acer Aspire One netbook (D250 1.6ghz 1gig ram) and have some problems with the synaptics touchpad adjustments.

It works ok, but I want to turn off tap-to-click and scrolling etc but no joy.

As soon as I use control panel to open the flsynclient the touchpad stops working and I can't position the mouse pointer to make the changes I need. However, if I plug in a usb mouse I am able to set the flsynclient as i want it to be, and then I click on save, but the settings do not get remembered, so that after a reboot the touchpad drops back to the original settings.

Any ideas?

First, for persistent settings, you need to make ~/Startup/load-touchpad-settings executable, using 'Startups' from akita_setup (loads at 1st boot)

About the rest... Hmmm... Not sure.. Will see what I can do, but I don't really use laptops...

Possible ideas include
- re-compile and re-install flsynclient
- http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=633569#633569
- get the wary files - http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01782
- errr.... not sure what else..

Thanks, that gives me persistence. Still have odd behaviour once the touchpad settings load. The touchpad works but has a large deadzone in the middle. Only functional area is a 5mm strip around each edge.

Will keep tinkering and report back if I make any progress.

Scott,

That problem with alsaconf I mentioned some time back is still there (my soundcard is not getting detected automatically, so have to run it).

The window is too narrow to read anything, but attempting to resize either closes the window, or sometimes crashes X.
The line at the end of alsawizard:
Code:
rxvt -geometry 60x3 -bg orange -e /usr/sbin/alsaconf

can be altered to cure this, changing the 3 to 30 or more, or even getting rid of the -geometry bit altogether. Resizing still closes the window, but it isn't really necessary to do that.

Bash history is not working for me - the .history file is there but isn't updated. Can't work out why, but I've been trying. Had similar problems with this in previous versions too.
Apart from that, everything is fine. Plenty of stuff to play with.

Not sure if this is correct, but googling tells me this, from here: http://www.martin-bock.de/pc/pc-0310.html#sound

after this line:
Code:
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

add this:
Code:
alias sound maestro
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias snd-card-0 snd-es1968
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
options snd cards_limit=1

Not sure if the first 3 lines are needed, actually.. Or if it will work at all! As I said before, alsaconf seems to kill sound on my PC, on any pup, until rebooted, so it's hard to test it!

Yep, completely forgot about that one, but now I remember you posting about it... Sorry...

OK, I really should google stuff more often... See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1695315

It seems BASH 4.2 will only write to ~/.history when you leave a terminal session specifically using the 'exit' command or Ctrl+D... I just tested it, now history works... So either revert to BASH 4.1 or simply get in the habit of using Ctrl-D!

I tried this under QEMU on Windows with MobaLive USB, and found that xmesa loads. but nothing really shows up and Xorg loads, but I can't probe for video hardware. But I think that that is a QEMU related problem.

QEMU is really slow, I think I remember using Xvesa, waiting ages...

...it was something to do with finding drive labels - so maybe exit to prompt (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) and run the following:

Code:
chmod -x /etc/init.d/rc.jwm_drives ~/Startup/gtk-mnt-links /usr/sbin/blkid-name-generator

I think Barry recently posted about blkid being slow... see 1st comment: http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02885

I will try to sort it out for next time...

Subject description: problems with flash installer, midori, and pidgin for msn

Hi Scott, glad to see you made it back! Very Happy Just doing a little testing for you. Here is what I have found so far. Flash installer for flash 9 does not work. But you can use package manager, and it works fine. Midori does not have an icon in menu and has no search engine installed. Pidgin is missing libs for use with MSN. These libs include gnutls, libgcrypt, and libgpg-error. I found all these libs in quirky linux packages at ibiblio. Now Pidgin works fine with MSN. I will keep checking more things out and report back. Akita looks better and better each time I test it. Also, have you thought about a barebones version of Akita, so people can just install the packages they want? One other note: Icewm does not seem to be configurable. I tried to set it to put taskbar at top, in /root and /usr, with no success. Thanks again for all your hard work. Hope all is better now. Thanks, Rob

Hi oligin10, thanks for testing and giving feedback. I see now that Adobe changed their URLs, I will change to an akita repo hosted version that I have.

I'll try to update the package.

Thanks for that, I missed that...

Which pidgin pkg/version did you install?

There is 2.7.5 and 2.10 in the akita repo, and another one in the Wary5 repo... But anyway, I think I have all those libs somewhere, will add the deps to the PPM.

Slowly getting there... Wink

My brother wanted similar... I could give it a go sometime... But I know myself, I probably won't get round to it.

I edited /root/.icewm/preferences, set the option TaskbarAtTop=1

It worked for me.. Is this not the normal way to edit icewm settings? How do people usually change icewm settings? Did you try using another method?

My pleasure, thanks for testing... Appreciate it as ever.

Hi Contributors

Just a few observations on the last few pages:

On alsa configuration there is also helpful information at:

http://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main which lists various soundcards and links to configuration information for them.

The program alsactl can save and restore sound states and perhaps this could be also looked at as a possible alternative to running alsaconf if the amendments to alsa.conf dont work.

$HOME/.wine cannot be completely copied to a vfat partition NB in particular the drive mappings use symlinks. My solution was to move the directory
$HOME/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 to a vfat partition and $HOME/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 is set as a symlink to point to the system32 folder now on a vfat partition. The bulk of the contents of $HOME/.wine appear to be the DLLs etc in the system32 folder so moving that folder may be able to save a fair amount of space in a save file or ext2-4 partition (if full install).

Vfat does not support symlinks, however you can remap directories (but not individual files) with the mount --bind command. For example if you are running a Mozilla based program and /mnt/home/.mozilla is on a vfat partition, /mnt/home/..mozilla could be remapped to an ext2-4 partition or a ramdisk. It could be remapped (as an example) to /root/.mozilla with:

mount --bind /mnt/home/.mozilla /root/.mozilla

Of course if the information in /mnt/home/.mozilla was still needed it would have to be copied to /root/.mozilla before the mount command is run.

Hi Scott, thanks for the quick reply. I'm not sure which Pidgin, but it was from the Akita repository. And yes, that is what I tried when editing icewm. It didn't work for me, but I had installed some other window managers, maybe they were causing a problem. When I get a chance, I will test some more on icewm. Glad to help, Rob

Just to clarify, I'm not having problems with alsaconf.
Akita is not detecting my card automatically on first run (has happened with other pups too), but running alsaconf gets it going, which is what it's for. Settings retained after reboot as well, so all is well.

Good find with the Bash history cure. I'll be a `Control+D` pedant from now on...

Downloaded and burned to disk AL, Beta 9. Opened up just fine and installed to Sandisk 16gb thumb drive. Rebooted fine.

Chrome 9 thinks my yahoo login is an attack and won't let me in. FF 7 updated to 12 and QTWeb will but definitely not my favorite browsers. Iron 19 installed but won't open. Flash 11 works good, better than my Lucid Puppy 5.2.9 thumb drive.

I greatly prefer Iron to Chrome/Chromium, can anyone recommend a suitable pet that will work with Akita?

Can't say if it's my web connection or not, streaming audio is choppy.

P4 3.4ghz/800FSB on Asus P4S800DX mobo
4gb RAM
NVidia 8x PCIe card 7xxx series.
