How to determine what graphics card I have? (Solved) |
|
Hirens Boot CD confirmed it is a NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti4200 AGP8x
Thanks Pemasu!
Original Post:
Hi, I'm running puppy 4.3.1. trying to follow this thread on installing nvidia drivers. I installed Xorg DRI. Got glxgears running, got a framerate of 215, at another point a framerate of 400-something.
And that's as far as I get. I can't seem to find a way to find out what version my card is. I've tried and | Code: | depmod -a
modprobe nvidia | but the output is always | Code: | | FATAL: Module nvidia not found |
I'm fairly new to linux (and hardware) but tried what I thought would give me some hint as to what is in this box, namely dmesg, dmidecode, and looking through Hardinfo, but to no avail. I opened up the computer but the card itself doesn't tell me much either, except for little black rectangles that say samsung 235 and a bunch of numbers underneath that. I rescued this computer from a dump, so I have no idea if the nvidia card was at one point changed for another.
Edit: And cheers to the moderator editing the subject. You're right, I was assuming it's a Nvidia card, but as yet have no proof of this.

Well, you should read your posted link to the end. You need to dowload and install devx sfs and kernel source sfs which are spesific for your puppy.
Then download right nvidia installer package. Then you need to run it and after that the right kernel module driver nvidia will be installed. Then you need to switch the driver with xorgwizard to use the newly compiled and installed nvidia.
That link seems to have good guide to do as I described.
Xor DRI gives acceleration and 3D support for you nvidia driver. First you need to get it installed and load it with xorgwizard.

as far as i know, only after yo uinstalled your drivers will your computer regonize your graphics card.
in other words, you compputer do not know what card you have unless you install driver.
hmmm?
EDIT:i think i am wrong. i should be.

I read your first post and your topic really bad. My mistake. I am sorry.
Well, find out from net, what specs you desktop or laptop has. Usually you can obtain the graphics card information that way.
Use hiren`s boot cd to obtain information of your card. It has really good diagnostic applications.
Or use from menu > system > system status and config > hardinfo hardware information > pci devices

Pemasu, you seem to think this thread is about how to install a nvidia driver. It is not.
I do not know what graphics card I have. As I've said, she's a rescue. The only clue I have is a sticker on the front that reads:
Which leads me to believe it's a Nvidia card. But I can not seem to find out what kind. "graphics n" does not appear to be in the list of options in the Nvidia driver selection process. Even if it did, I would still need to know more than just that.
This is the whole problem, and subject of this thread. I can manage the installation.

Look in menu > system > Pupscan interface information > pci
interfaces.

I think that Hiren`s boot cd with it`s diagnostic tools is for you.
http://www.hirensbootcd.net/download.html
Pupscan might provide useful information also.
In console #lspci -nn -v

I will look for hiren's boot cd. Hardinfo gives me the following:
| Code: | -PCI Devices-
Class 0600 : 1039:0648
Class 0604 : 1039:0001
Class 0601 : 1039:0963

Class 0c03 : 1039:7002

All of them have device information (that can't be copied and is not included when I generate a report), most of it seems to be included in the following read-out.

Well, it turned up several results that say it has a GeForce 4 8X Ti 4200 Vers. 1.0, so I will give that a shot. The official website does not list this PC anymore.
I feel silly for not having done this already. Thanks again. I hope this is the right one.
Edit: Still, it remains a guess. I cannot be sure this is actually what is in this PC.

Edit: I'll make a new thread, as this post was not about finding out what graphics card I have, but the installation process of a nvidia driver.
