Yes sir, you can run it from a HDD or USB stick or just from the CD itself (and save your files right on the CD)if you want, there is good info on that in the 'Cutting Edge' topic on this forum.

As far a browser 'security' goes, there are as many opinions as there are browsers but... as long as you're using Linux, you are ahead of the security-game for sure. I am not familiar with the newer Internet Explorer I haven't used Windows system for over two-years now (since a hacker destroyed my computer with a virus) but have had no problems at all running Linux and... I don't even have a virus protection program running (like I did on my Windows system). just run a firewall on the Linux.

In Cloud Puppy, you can upgrade to one of the newer 'Iron Browsers' if you like, although the version that comes with Cloud Puppy is still a very good one...go to-

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... uppylinux/

and in the Lucid section, you can download one of the later Iron Browsers which work fine in Cloud Puppy since it is a Lucid-based program to start with.

Your company I.T techs sound like Window's users... I don't believe them either

Just installed Cloud 1.0 to usb stick on one of my Acer netbooks. Looks good, and quite fast loading. (Only issue was that when I tried to use the "USB bootflash" installer it gave an error and said it was looking for a BrowserLinux iso. so I had to use the other utility)

Tried it on my second Acer netbook (slightly newer) but it doesn't recognise the wireless interface. I will have to try to find out how to load the correct module.

I probably shoud have mentioned: :(

If you want to run a 'more-recent' Puppy version such as Slacko, Saluki, Precise, Luci or Lupu, with more of the modern update functions such as WiFi-ready etc., and still enjoy the benefit of Cloud functions, you might like my little '.pet' (Download URL at the bottom of this post... 'Cloud Computing For Every Puppy') With this little .pet, you can have the Puppy that suites you best plus the advantage of Cloud!

Awesome idea. I will give that a go. (Although - wont that remove the advantage of Cloud 1 - which is nicely cut down and has no other offline bloat?? Won't I still get slow operating system loading because of using the full new puppy, plus the pet on top?)

Cloud 1.0 gets me onto the internet 15 seconds quicker than the next fastest puppy I have found (which is Saluki on my netbook). I will give the pet a go and see what happens.

I think you might be surprised at the speed... the .pet uses resources provided by the 'browser' so for the most part, if you have a fast browser, you'll have a fast Internet Cloud .pet, no matter the Puppy Version... If your browser is sluggish... it will reflect! Try it in some various Puppy versions, it won't hurt anything and it only takes a 'click' to remove via the PPM (Puppy Package Manager accessed through the 'Install' desktop icon if you don't approve.)

Possibly... when the next 'right' version of Puppy appears, I'll consider using it as the base for the next version of Cloud Puppy... I have fooled around with a lot of them and am not quite happy with the outcome just yet... also, Cloud is still NEW to a lot of people and also to itself. I believe you will see new directions being taken in the near future so we're watching and waiting to see how to go about it all so the user will benefit the most!

I'm not sure what you are asking.... Are you trying to add it into my Cloud Apps? This I can help you with!

do you want to know what this program does? If this is the case, sorry, I am not familiar with it!

Lots of what's in there appears to also be in cpanel or else available from online resources - probably good for a busy app developer. Was really just curious what you thought of the tool-set.

What are the chances of getting MythTV running on the cloud?

I'm not sure if it makes sense or not for my app - we have a SiliconDust tv tuner that converts the signal to streaming digital on an IP - I can see the device and tune channels but need MythTV or something like it to actually view the program.

Does MythTV really need to reside on the local PC's or could it operate on the cloud?

We have a Hauppauge interface to convert RCA and S-video to USB - the drivers for it require kernel 3.x

I don't think I've asked you this previously but is there a working version of Puppy Cloud that runs on kernel 3x?

MythTV....?

No but... some of the Puppy programmers have in the past made 3.x.x kernels in both .pet and .sfs form and had them available for downloading but it's been awhile and for the life of me I can't remember who or where? Try poking around in the forum for such and if you find one, install it in Cloud Puppy (not your regular working version of course) and take it for a spin and see what happens? Barry K was talking of putting a 3.x.x kernel in his quirky section at ibiblio but I don't know if he ever did that? you might check there too?

By chance.... have you tried your MythTV with Cloud Puppy the way it is?

MythTV is an open-source DVR that provides a bunch of TV, CTV, and other resources, including recording video, etc.

Here's a nice summary page:
http://www.mythtv.org/detail/mythtv

I think you will find it a fascinating quick look.

I tried and, as tends to be my usual experience, ran into a buzz-saw of complications and road-blocks.

I need to do one of two things:

1. Change myself and the other 4 users here from the dpup 5x14 exprimo distro to a different one with kernel 3.x (so that every PC has access to the 3.x-dependent apps).

2. Manage multiple distros; keep some on dpup 5x14, move some to a 3.x distro, plus a Cloud distro.

I really do not want to manage multiple distros. I have too many other things to do for that.

I guess I will wait for someone else to get MythTV working for Puppy and see on which distros it is supported - I will require a distro that is 3.x-friendly (or a way to communicate with my Hauppauge device from a Cloud-based distro) - I support a mix of laptops and netbooks (then there are the needs of smartphones and ipods, etc).

Meanwhile, I will pursue Linode as my almost-everything Cloud.

I'll also need a home-based server so that I may mirror the Linode system ... just in case.

Then to see how to tie it all together!

Whew ... tired thinking about it. :-)

Thanks!

I had a moment to look at Linode.com and then saw the price tag. I am used to paying annually vs monthly, about $80/yr to host three domains. Linode is monthly, the smallest package is $19.95/mo = $240/yr. Ouch!

QUESTION1: Isn't the "cloud" essentially a virtual mainframe and whatever browser/etc. app one uses the equivalent of a simple terminal?

QUESTION2: Can one have a primary cloud (on one host) and a secondary cloud (on a different host) - in separate locations and mirrored - so that if the primary goes down one may switch to the secondary? (Sorta like Linode, but cheaper.)

Our provider just upgraded all accounts from a bandwidth of 3 to 4 and offers higher-bandwidth tiers of 8 and 12.

If I were to upgrade to 12 (additional $20/mo) and connect a home server could I host my own "personal cloud"?

My primary access would be from a smartphone and a notebook. At home everyone has a laptop and, at least for now, would not really require apps on a cloud server.

My home server box would essentially be an "online mainframe" supplemented by common cloud-type resources (essentially free storage sites, online apps hosted by others, Yahoogroups, etc.)

The most common apps we are likely to use remotely on our "personal cloud" would be LibreOffice (generally only the Writer), shared addressbook, bookmarks, an encrypted password file, most high-demand or large image, text, or video files would be served from a Dropbox-type cloud.

I will probably relocate the several blogs to a free blog service that is essentially a cloud (both app execution and file storage online).

Since I am already doing what I plan for the "personal cloud" on a laptop I would use it as my "personal cloud server" - with a proper UPS for emergency power and surge protection. (The router and fiber modem are already on UPS's).

For safety I could mirror to another box at home, at a neighbor's home, or to an free online site.

WDYT?

GoDaddy claims to have the best prices, simplest interface, and most-flexible scalability.

Does that ring true based on what y'all know about these things?

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what you're trying to accomplish?

Are you setting up a Cloud strictly for your personal use or are you trying to set something up for anyone to access your Cloud structure?

If it's for yourself... you might just consider something like 'zoho' they provide a lot of powerful applications and they are very reliable and of course, they are FREE (up to a certain size-limit). Here again, I don't know what your goal is?

My personal cloud would be primarily ... for personal use.

I would pass-thru visitors to documents, images, etc. I have created (or found and wish to share) - but they'd be hosted elsewhere.

I generally would not provide access to most of the site nor to most of the hosted applications - and then probably only via a sign-in process to control access and resource usage.

Zoho looks like a neat resource for project-oriented tasks where one may purchase cloud-hosted apps & resources for a purpose - and pay for each user/app as-needed.

Hostgator looks appealing ... although I am concerned that they market "Instantly Install over 75 open source scripts with QuickInstall!" ... but I cannot find the list of 75 so as to determine if they have what I need, e.g. is LibreOffice on the list?

Also, will they add an app if one requests e.g. a severe weather app or Ham radio apps or MythTV or ??

Thanks!

Hi Smokey01

Since you are familiar with HostGator, possibly you could better answer edoc's questions as to what exactly they can provide him? I realize he is asking about GoDaddy but I am not familiar with their offerings... if someone else is, please feel free to jump in here!

Myself, if I were going to try out a new website idea, I would do it on one of the FREE hosting services 'first' and if it went well, then consider the 'pay for' type instead of going for a long-term commitment from the git-go! There are very good and reliable FREE hosting services out there... http://www.000webhost.com/ is one I have used but I don't know if a FREE hosting service will provide what you need up front? gotta do some research there!
