Wary Puppy 5.1.1.53 (5.1.2 beta1) Subject description: fido |
|
Having saved and rebooted I am fido now and am browsing as fido..
# whoami
fido
# ps | grep seamonkey
32088 fido 0:00 /bin/sh /usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.18/run-mozilla.sh /usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.18/seamonkey-bin
32093 fido 0:04 /usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.18/seamonkey-bin
32633 fido 0:00 grep seamonkey
#
switching to root is working OK
# su root
Password:
# whoami
root
#
One thing to mention:
At first I was asked for the administrator's password.
I had no problem with it then I noticed that it was the BootManager who asked for it. Don't know what a underprivileged user will do in this situation.???
spot has a home in /home/spot and has entries in /root/spot too.
fido's home could not yet be found, should be /home/fido ?
nooby's question about $ and # is very good.
$ for non-root can be done, $ symbolized: pay (a password)
I think this can be set in ~.bashrc but I won't try it now and hope someone who knows it exactly will post the solution here.
Edited:
PPM, pmount and connect are asking for the password, very good !
And now I know what the undeprivileged user must do: klick 3 times and the askpass box will disappear! Maybe I will try to buildin the name of the application.

What could be the solution then to the SFS-Exec not starting up the unloader Does one have to set permissions to launch it? Why would root fail to launch it. Maybe I don't know how one do that though. One would have to call it up using Terminal maybe.

Orinoco WiFi kernel problem? Subject description: full boot fails when trying to load orinoco.cs module |
|
Hi Puppy!
Just booted Wary 5.1.1.53 and got some kind of error (sorry i did not not get any log file or a readout of the error) but the system had some kind of kernel panic(?) after trying to load my Lucent Technologies Orinoco WiFi card. I took it out, and puppy booted fine, but when I inserted it into the PCMIA slot once everything was loaded, the system froze and I had to reboot again.
I can try to get more info if needed. I do have a pupsave .3fs file from Wary 5.0 that is getting loaded, I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not...
Let me know if any more info is needed.

Oh, I should add, please don't post any bug reports on fido. I know it is partly broken. The purpose of fido in this release is for anyone who want to fix it.
If you are not in that "I can fix it" category, you can still try fido if you wish, but don't expect everything to work, and don't post here about what does and does not work. Thanks.

Updated pupradio to work with "fido"
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=371420#371420
It would also now work with any multiuser system but the $HOME/.pupradio dir would need to be copied to the USER'S $HOME and ownership changed.

@nooby
If you want a fancy terminal with all that stuff telling you who and where you are, in case you forget you can do as that dude on distrowatch did and put this in /root/.bashrc Code: |
PS1="\u@\h:\w$ "
export PS1
|
Hope this helps.

Manual frugal install on my old P3 test box. Not using "fido" because I'm happy running as root.
Sound and display (1024x768) working on initial boot. Internet was not working but SNS made quick work of that and connection is persistent.
Installed Mesa, Firefox 4.01 and Opera 11.10...... all working well.

Wary vs. MacBook Pro |
|
latest Wary boots fine on MacBook Pro, but...
- the trackpad does not work (synaptics issue? i tried changing xorg.conf briefly to no avail) USB mouse works fine.
- no WiFi. it has a Broadcom 4322 card, seems the b43 drivers do not work for that one. don't know the details with trying to install the wl.ko stuff. I'm having the same issues with a debian live-build i've been trying to make.
- no sound. tried running alsaconfig and changing alsamixer settings but nothing seemed to work.
didn't spend too much more time with it, but thats what I can report. my roommate who I was attempting to help out (OSX seems to be dying after 6 months of use) seemed excited about the possibility of getting a Puppy though! i know Apple machines are low priority, and perhaps Wary is not the Puppy to deal with them, but i thought i'd report at least.

Barry, I will do my best to live up to not post bug reports here unless I can also fix them.
But Micko and others that can help you fix things maybe have help from us telling what did not work on our gear and then them too get curious on how that works on their gear and then they see how it all works and can suggest ways that solve it.
I bow out now only wanted to share how it appeared on my Acer D250 using N270 Atom.
I sure am looking forward that we have a Fido that works on all gear.
Thanks to Micko for suggestion to get $ sign and # sign to change for whoami answers in Terminal. No hurry. I have to wait until most bugs are solved. Looks promising indeed. Thanks to all involved.

Attym is crashing a lot for me, nothing to do with clicking on links, it's crashing when i move the window, it even crashed when i moved a window not related to it.
Here's my attempt at the NVIDIA-x86-260.19.44 driver for wary. It uses the pinstall scripts from the lucid nvidia driver, so thanks again to whoever created those, and i hope you don't mind.
It seems to be working ok for me, HD1920x1080,glxgears & googleearth all working fine.
# glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
12531 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2506.159 FPS
13577 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2715.376 FPS
13540 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2707.994 FPS
13639 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2727.701 FPS
13567 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2713.294 FPS
If you try it, could you please say if it's working for you,or not.
You can download it here....

Running Wary from DVD on Athlon(tm) Dual Core Processor
auto ethernet worked (and was persistent)
Sound worked but was not persistent (after reboot)
so will run the audio wizard . . .
Liked the video upgrade wizard - which correctly ID'ed my radeon ATI but no compiled driver yet available.
Installed the ATI driver in PPM but this slowed the system and turned my cursor into a long thin line. So uninstalled it.
Good to see transmission there and the version
is a good one - though apparently big.
Was on Puppy IRC channel and someone using ayttm in Wary was being disconnected continuously.
Will try precord later
Many thanks

The problem with hard-drive-less computers not booting off USB is still not resolved.

precord (after turning on the mic by right clicking on the bottom right sound icon and fiddling with mic settigs) worked OK - that is great
The xchat in PPM does not auto set to #puppylinux at freenode (I am such a quiche eater)
Pleased to report that Flash which I thought was not installed (a flash icon kept appearing) worked OK as did the browser - though I could not install an extension (lastpass) that I use, in the browser version . . .
Was able to watch 30 min of streaming video. . .
Games are good with sound - like that
The frogger game had no images - was not picking up graphics
Fido is what I was most interested in . . . but in the end did not bother even trying at this stage . . .
